Toward the Limits of Nuclear Existence: First Science with FRIB

The opportunity to explore the properties of short-lived atomic nuclei—or rare isotopes—in laboratories has enabled discoveries across the sciences related to the nature of the nuclear force and the limits of nuclear existence, the origin of the elements in the Universe, the cosmic matter–antimatter asymmetry, and the application of rare isotopes for society and the nation. The newest-generation Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) on the campus of Michigan State University commenced operations in May 2022 as a user facility for the US Department of Energy, Office of Science, Office of Nuclear Physics. FRIB provides fast, stopped, and reaccelerated beams of rare isotopes for measurements, serving a 1,800-member-strong community of scientists from around the world. Here, this article reviews some of the first results from FRIB, showcasing the breadth of the science discoveries that have already occurred while the facility is ramping up to full capability.

Justification that the Thermo-Fisher Scientific 241 Am Residues Were Generated by Atomic Energy Defense Activities

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Land Withdrawal Act (LWA) as amended by the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1997 (1) requires that for Transuranic (TRU) waste to be eligible for disposal at WIPP, it must have been generated by atomic energy defense activities. The definition of “atomic energy defense activity” is defined in the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982 (NWPA) (2).

Assessment of Molybdate Based Corrosion Inhibitor for use at the Savannah River Tank Farm Cooling Water System

The Savannah River Site (SRS) has relied on 51 underground storage tanks, many dating back to the 1950s, to store radioactive liquid waste generated from nuclear processing and radionuclide production. These tanks use carbon steel cooling coils, cooled by soft, acidic water, to dissipate the decayed heat produced by radioactive waste. For decades, following historical industry practices, chromate has been added to the cooling water (~450 ppm at pH 9-11) to effectively inhibit corrosion, ensuring cooling coil longevity. Inspections of failed coils reveal that chromate-treated surfaces are generally well-preserved.
