Measurements of $\overline{\nu}_{\mu}$ and $\overline{\nu}_{\mu} + \nu_{\mu}$ charged-current cross-sections without detected pions or protons on water and hydrocarbon at a mean anti-neutrino energy of 0.86 GeV

We report measurements of the flux-integrated $\overline{\nu}_\mu$ and $\overline{\nu}_\mu+\nu_\mu$ charged-current cross-sections on water and hydrocarbon targets using the T2K anti-neutrino beam with a mean beam energy of 0.86 GeV. The signal is defined as the (anti-)neutrino charged-current interaction with one induced $\mu^\pm$ and no detected charged pion or proton. These measurements are performed using a new WAGASCI module recently added to the T2K setup in combination with the INGRID Proton Module. The phase space of muons is restricted to the high-detection efficiency region, $p_{\mu}>400~{\rm MeV}/c$ and $\theta_{\mu}<30^{\circ}$, in the laboratory frame. An absence of pions and protons in the detectable phase spaces of $p_{\pi}>200~{\rm MeV}/c$, $\theta_{\pi}<70^{\circ}$ and $p_{\rm p}>600~{\rm MeV}/c$, $\theta_{\rm p}<70^{\circ}$ is required. In this paper, both the $\overline{\nu}_\mu$ cross-sections and $\overline{\nu}_\mu+\nu_\mu$ cross-sections on water and hydrocarbon targets and their ratios are provided by using the D’Agostini unfolding method. The results of the integrated $\overline{\nu}_\mu$ cross-section measurements over this phase space are $\sigma_{\rm H_{2}O}=(1.082\pm0.068(\rm stat.)^{+0.145}_{-0.128}(\rm syst.)) \times 10^{-39}\,{\rm cm^{2} / nucleon}$, $\sigma_{\rm CH}=(1.096\pm0.054(\rm stat.)^{+0.132}_{-0.117}(\rm syst.)) \times 10^{-39}\,{\rm cm^{2} / nucleon}$, and $\sigma_{\rm H_{2}O}/\sigma_{\rm CH} = 0.987\pm0.078(\rm stat.)^{+0.093}_{-0.090}(\rm syst.)$. The $\overline{\nu}_\mu+\nu_\mu$ cross-section is $\sigma_{\rm H_{2}O} = (1.155\pm0.064(\rm stat.)^{+0.148}_{-0.129}(\rm syst.)) \times 10^{-39}\,{\rm cm^{2} / nucleon}$, $\sigma_{\rm CH}=(1.159\pm0.049(\rm stat.)^{+0.129}_{-0.115}(\rm syst.)) \times 10^{-39}\,{\rm cm^{2} / nucleon}$, and $\sigma_{\rm H_{2}O}/\sigma_{\rm CH}=0.996\pm0.069(\rm stat.)^{+0.083}_{-0.078}(\rm syst.)$.

Measurement of charged-current $\nu_{\mu}$ and $\nu_e$ interactions with wire-cell in MicroBooNE towards a search for low-energy $\nu_e$ excess

This technote summarizes the existing work in searching for $\nu_e$ low-energy excess (eLEE) in MicroBooNE Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) data stream based on the Wire-Cell event reconstruction paradigm. The charged-current $\nu_{\mu}$ and $\nu_e$ events are selected from the 5.3e19 POT data from the BNB beam and 2.06e20 POT data from Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam. The charged-current $\nu_e$ selection results from the BNB data that are sensitive to the eLEE search are not included. Various comparisons between data and Monte Carlo predictions are performed to validate the overall model and demonstrate the power of the analysis techniques.

A Joint Measurement of $\nu_{\mu}$-Disappearance and $\nu_{e}$e-Appearance in the NuMI beam using the NOvA Experiment

The discovery of neutrino oscillations provides the first indication of a lepton flavor violating (LFV) process, one that isn't predicted by the Standard Model. As such, NOvA is part of a rich experimental program to constrain unknown parameters in the neutrino oscillation model, described for three neutrino flavors using the PMNS unitary matrix. It is a long baseline experiment utilizing two detectors, a Near Detector at Fermilab and a Far Detector in Ash River, Minnesota for a total baseline of 810 km. It receives a predominantly ${\nu_\mu}/\overline{\bar\nu_\mu}$ beam peaking at 1:8 GeV from the NuMI beam facility at Fermilab. There are four oscillation channels used in the analysis, ${\nu_\mu} \to {\nu_\mu}$, ${\nu_\mu} \to {\nu_e}$, ${\overline{\nu}_\mu} \to {\overline{\nu}_\mu}$ and ${\overline{\nu}_\mu} \to {\overline{\nu}_e }$. With a total exposure of 13:6_10$^{20}$ and 12:5_10$^{20}$ protons on target for the neutrino and anti-neutrino beam modes respectively, 82 candidates are seen in the ${\nu_\mu} \to {\nu_e}$ channel for a total predicted backgroundof 26:8 events. Similarly, 33 candidates are seen in the corresponding anti-neutrino channel for a total predicted background of 14:0 events. In the ${\nu_\mu} \to {\nu_\mu}$ $(\overline{\nu}_\mu \to \overline{\nu}_\mu}$ channel, 211 (105) candidates are seen with an expectation of 1156.1 (488.1) events at no oscillations.

Measurement of electroweak $Z\left(\nu \overline{\nu}\right)\gamma jj$ production and limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The electroweak production of $Z\left(\nu \overline{\nu}\right)\gamma jj$ in association with two jets is studied in a regime with a photon of high transverse momentum above 150 GeV using proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis uses a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 collected by the ATLAS detector during the 2015–2018 LHC data-taking period. This process is an important probe of the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism in the Standard Model and is sensitive to quartic gauge boson couplings via vector-boson scattering. The fiducial $Z\left(\nu \overline{\nu}\right)\gamma jj$ cross section for electroweak production is measured to be ${0.77}_{-0.30}^{+0.34}$ fb and is consistent with the Standard Model prediction. Evidence of electroweak $Z\left(\nu \overline{\nu}\right)\gamma jj$ production is found with an observed significance of 3.2σ for the background-only hypothesis, compared with an expected significance of 3.7σ. The combination of this result with the previously published ATLAS observation of electroweak $Z\left(\nu \overline{\nu}\right)\gamma jj$ production yields an observed (expected) signal significance of 6.3σ (6.6σ). Limits on anomalous quartic gauge boson couplings are obtained in the framework of effective field theory with dimension-8 operators.

Observation of the ${K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu}$ decay and measurement of its branching ratio

A measurement of the ${K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu}$ decay by the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS is presented, using data collected in 2021 and 2022. This dataset was recorded, after modifications to the beamline and detectors, at a higher instantaneous beam intensity with respect to the 2016–2018 data taking. Combining NA62 data collected in 2016–2022, a measurement $\mathcal{B} ({K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu}) = \large{(}13.0^{+3.3}_{-3.0}\large{)}$ x $10^{-11}$ of is reported. With 51 signal candidates observed and an expected background of $18^{+3}_{-2}$ events, $\mathcal{B} ({K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu})$ becomes the smallest branching ratio measured with a signal significance above 5σ.

Observation of the semileptonic decays $$ {\textrm{D}}^0\to {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0{\pi}^{-}{\pi}^0{\textrm{e}}^{+}{\nu}_{\textrm{e}} $$ and $$ {\textrm{D}}^{+}\to {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0{\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-}{\textrm{e}}^{+}{\nu}_{\textrm{e}} $$

Abstract By analyzinge + e − annihilation data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb −1 collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, the first observation of the semileptonic decays$$ {D}^0\to {K}_S^0{\pi}^{-}{\pi}^0{e}^{+}{\nu}_e $$ D 0 → K S 0 π − π 0 e + ν e and$$ {D}^{+}\to {K}_S^0{\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-}{e}^{+}{\nu}_e $$ D + → K S 0 π + π − e + ν e is reported. In the hypothesis that all events correspond toK 1 (1270) decays, the branching fractions are measured to be$$ \mathcal{B}\left({D}^0\to {K}_1{(1270)}^{-}\left(\to {K}_S^0{\pi}^{-}{\pi}^0\right){e}^{+}{\nu}_e\right)=\left({1.69}_{-0.46}^{+0.53}\pm 0.15\right)\times {10}^{-4} $$ B D 0 → K 1 1270 − → K S 0 π − π 0 e + ν e = 1.69 − 0.46 + 0.53 ± 0.15 × 10 − 4 and$$ \mathcal{B}\left({D}^{+}\to {\overline{K}}_1{(1270)}^0\left(\to {K}_S^0{\pi}^{+}{\pi}^{-}\right){e}^{+}{\nu}^e\right)=\left({1.47}_{-0.40}^{+0.45}\pm 0.14\right)\times {10}^{-4} $$ B D + → K ¯ 1 1270 0 → K S 0 π + π − e + ν e = 1.47 − 0.40 + 0.45 ± 0.14 × 10 − 4 with statistical significance of 5.4σand 5.6σ, respectively. When combined with measurements of theK 1 (1270)→ K + π − πdecays, the absolute branching fractions are determined to be$$ \mathcal{B}\left({D}^0\to {K}_1{(1270)}^{-}{e}^{+}{\nu}_e\right)=\left({1.08}_{-0.13-0.10}^{+0.14+0.08}\pm 0.21\right)\times {10}^{-3} $$ B D 0 → K 1 1270 − e + ν e = 1.08 − 0.13 − 0.10 + 0.14 + 0.08 ± 0.21 × 10 − 3 and$$ \mathcal{B}\left({D}^{+}\to {\overline{K}}_1{(1270)}^0{e}^{+}{\nu}_e\right)=\left({1.70}_{-0.23}^{+0.26}\pm 0.13\pm 0.35\right)\times {10}^{-3} $$ B D + → K ¯ 1 1270 0 e + ν e = 1.70 − 0.23 + 0.26 ± 0.13 ± 0.35 × 10 − 3 . The first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, and the third uncertainties originate from the assumed branching fractions of theK 1 (1270)→ Kππdecays.

CPT violation sensitivity of NoVA, T2K and INO experiments using $\nu$ and $\bar{\nu}$ oscillation parameters

Charge-Parity-Time (CPT) symmetry allows only identical oscillation parameters for $\nu$ and $\bar{\nu}$. But,different mass and mixing parameters for $\nu$ and $\bar{\nu}$ can give us possible hint for CPT violation or new physics. Using, different oscillation parameters for $\nu$ and $\bar\nu$, we find sensitivity for ($\Delta m^{2}_{32}-\Delta\bar{m}^{2}_{32}$) and ($\sin^{2}\theta_{23}-\sin^{2}\bar{\theta}_{23}$) for long-baseline (T2K and NOvA) and atmospheric neutrino (INO) experiments in different possible combinations of octant for neutrinos and anti-neutrinos. We present the joint sensitivity of the T2K, NOvA and INO experiments to such CPT violating observables.

An investigation of the very rare ${K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu}$ decay

The NA62 experiment reports an investigation of the ${K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu}$ mode from a sample of ${K}^{+}$ decays collected in 2017 at the CERN SPS. The experiment has achieved a single event sensitivity of (0.389 ± 0.024) × 10 -10 , corresponding to 2.2 events assuming the Standard Model branching ratio of (8.4 ± 1.0) × 10 -11 . Two signal candidates are observed with an expected background of 1.5 events. Combined with the result of a similar analysis conducted by NA62 on a smaller data set recorded in 2016, the collaboration now reports an upper limit of 1.78 × 10 -10 for the ${K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu}$ branching ratio at 90% CL. This, together with the corresponding 68% CL measurement of (${0.48}_{-0.48}^{+0.72}$) × 10 -10 , are currently the most precise results worldwide, and are able to constrain some New Physics models that predict large enhancements still allowed by previous measurements.

NO$\nu$A Far Detector $\nu_e$ Sideband Study Technical Note

Till now the NO$\nu$A experiment has used the Far Detector (FD) electron neutrino (anti-neutrino) events in the energy range 1 < $E_ν$ < 4 GeV in 3-favor neutrino oscillation analysis, to constraint the neutrino oscillation parameters. In this study, we have used the high-energy neutrino (sideband) sample with 4 < $E_ν$ < 12 GeV, dominated heavily by the beam electron neutrino/anti-neutrino background events to constrain the neutrino oscillation parameters. This was done to figure out if an additional power can be obtained in constraining the oscillation parameters by adding this sample to the analysis. This technote discusses the modifications done in the existing framework to add the sideband sample to the standard FD $\nu_e$ predictions and its impact on the neutrino oscillation parameters sensitivity of the NO$\nu$A experiment. Results from the statistics only study and the study including all the existing systematic shifts are reported separately.

Search for heavy resonances decaying into a pair of Z bosons in the $\ell ^+\ell ^-\ell '^+\ell '^-$ and $\ell ^+\ell ^-\nu {{\bar{\nu }}}$ final states using 139 $\mathrm {fb}^{-1}$ of proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for heavy resonances decaying into a pair of Z bosons leading to $\ell ^+\ell ^-\ell '^+\ell '^-$ and $\ell ^+\ell ^-\nu {{\bar{\nu }}}$ final states, where ℓ stands for either an electron or a muon, is presented. The search uses proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected from 2015 to 2018 that corresponds to the integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 recorded by the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. Different mass ranges spanning 200 GeV to 2000 GeV for the hypothetical resonances are considered, depending on the final state and model. In the absence of a significant observed excess, the results are interpreted as upper limits on the production cross section of a spin-0 or spin-2 resonance. The upper limits for the spin-0 resonance are translated to exclusion contours in the context of Type-I and Type-II two-Higgs-doublet models, and the limits for the spin-2 resonance are used to constrain the Randall–Sundrum model with an extra dimension giving rise to spin-2 graviton excitations.

Measurements of differential cross sections of Higgs boson production through gluon fusion in the $H\rightarrow WW^{*}\rightarrow e\nu \mu \nu$ final state at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

Higgs boson production via gluon–gluon fusion is measured in the $H\rightarrow WW^{*}\rightarrow e\nu \mu \nu$ decay channel. The dataset utilized corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 collected by the ATLAS detector from $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV proton–proton collisions delivered by the Large Hadron Collider between 2015 and 2018. Differential cross sections are measured in a fiducial phase space restricted to the production of at most one additional jet. The results are consistent with Standard Model expectations, derived using different Monte Carlo generators.

Measurements of Higgs boson production via gluon–gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion using $H\rightarrow WW^*\rightarrow \ell \nu \ell \nu$ decays in pp collisions with the ATLAS detector and their effective field theory interpretations

Higgs boson production cross-sections via gluon–gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion in proton–proton collisions are measured in the $H\rightarrow WW^*\rightarrow \ell \nu \ell \nu$ decay channel. The Large Hadron Collider delivered proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV between 2015 and 2018, which were recorded by the ATLAS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $140\,\text {fb}^{-1}.$ The total cross-sections for Higgs boson production by gluon–gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion times the $H\rightarrow WW^*$ branching ratio are measured to be $12.4^{+1.3}_{-1.2}\,\text {pb}$ and $0.79^{+0.18}_{-0.16}\,\text {pb},$ respectively, in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. Higgs boson production is further characterised through measurements of Simplified Template Cross-Sections in a total of fifteen kinematic fiducial regions. A new scheme of kinematic fiducial regions has been introduced to enhance the sensitivity to CP-violating effects in Higgs boson interactions. Both schemes are used to constrain CP-even and CP-odd dimension-six operators in the Standard Model effective field theory.

Measurement of charged-current $\nu_\mu$ and $\bar{\nu}_\mu$ cross sections on hydrocarbon in a shallow inelastic scattering region

This MINERvA analysis is the first neutrino and antineutrino study of a shallow inelastic scattering region, which is the transition region between resonant production and deep inelastic scattering processes. This transition is explicitly included in this study by expanding the scope of shallow inelastic scattering to include not only the mainly lower-$Q^2$ nonresonant pion production but also the kinematic region where pion production off quarks within the nucleon becomes significant with $Q^2$ below the onset of the deep-inelastic scattering region defined in this analysis. To reduce the resonance background the kinematic region 1.5 $<$$W$$<$ 2 GeV/$c^2$ was chosen. In addition to the inclusive differential cross section measurements, to emphasize SIS interactions off quarks within the nucleon a sample with $Q^2$$\geq$ 1 GeV/$c^2$ was also analyzed. The measurements of one-dimensional cross sections at $\left\langle E_\nu \right\rangle \sim 6$ GeV on hydrocarbon of $Q^2$, Bjorken x and muon momentum variables are compared with modified predictions from the GENIE 2 neutrino generator as well as predictions of other neutrino simulators GiBUU, NEUT, NuWro and an alternative GENIE 3 version. Significant discrepancies both in shape and magnitude between measurements and neutrino simulator predictions of all variables have been observed.

Search for a CP-odd Higgs boson decaying into a heavy CP-even Higgs boson and a Z boson in the ${\ell}^{+}{\ell}^{-}t\overline{t}$ and $\nu\overline{\nu}b\overline{b}$ final states using 140 fb –1 of data collected with the ATLAS detector

A search for a heavy CP-odd Higgs boson, A, decaying into a Z boson and a heavy CP-even Higgs boson, H, is presented. It uses the full LHC Run 2 dataset of pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb –1 . The search for A → ZH is performed in the $ℓ^+ℓ^–t\bar{t}$ and $ν\bar{ν}b\bar{b}$ final states and surpasses the reach of previous searches in different final states in the region with mH > 350 GeV and mA > 800 GeV. No significant deviation from the Standard Model expectation is found. Upper limits are placed on the production cross-section times the decay branching ratios. Limits with less model dependence are also presented as functions of the reconstructed $m(t\bar{t}$) and $m(b\bar{b}$) distributions in the $ℓ^+ℓ^–t\bar{t}$ and $ν\bar{ν}b\bar{b}$ channels, respectively. In addition, the results are interpreted in the context of two-Higgs-doublet models

Measurement of the Z boson differential production cross section using its invisible decay mode (Z$\nu\bar{\nu}$) in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV

Measurements of the total and differential fiducial cross sections for the Z boson decaying into two neutrinos are presented at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data were collected by the CMS detector in 2016 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. In these measurements, events are selected containing an imbalance in transverse momentum and one or more energetic jets. The fiducial differential cross section is measured as a function of the Z boson transverse momentum. The results are combined with a previous measurement of charged-lepton decays of the Z boson. The measured total fiducial cross section for events with Z boson transverse momentum greater than 200 GeV is $ {3000}_{-170}^{+180} $ fb.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Light quark loops in ${K}^{\pm}\to {\pi}^{\pm}\nu \overline{\nu}$ from vector meson dominance and update on the Kaon Unitarity Triangle

We use vector meson dominance to calculate non-perturbative contributions to the branching ratio of the rare decay $K$ ± → π ± $v\overline{v}$ stemming from matrix elements involving up-quark loops. The importance of this observable as well as of K 0 → π 0 l + l - and of the direct CP violation parameter ϵ' K is then discussed in the context of a Unitarity Triangle sqtudy based on Kaon sector observables only.
