The 7 th workshop of the NNSA-IAEC collaboration was conducted on November 8-10 2022. The workshop was held at the geologic survey of Israel, Jerusalem. The IAEC hosted the workshop. The main topic of the workshop evolved around the results of the characterization borehole drilled in the Yamin plain during 2022 and associated experimental work and modeling results. The new data will be integrated for the applicability analysis of intermediate depth borehole (IDB) disposal for spent fuel in the Yamin plain. The first day of the workshop (November 8 th ) was dedicated to a geological field trip in the Judea desert depicting a similar cross section to that found in the Yamin plain. During the 9 th and 10 th of November the characterization BH results were presented, results of new work on the Miocene Hazeva fm. were presented, and this year’s outcome of the different collaboration groups were given.
While the challenge from a risen and revisionist China may prove greater and more enduring, Russia’s war on Ukraine profoundly changes the strategic context, importance, and requirements of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) missions. The world changed as much in February of 2022 as it did in November of 1989 or December of 1991 , when the Berlin Wall fell and the Soviet Union fell apart. These changes will not likely be ephemeral. Russia is preparing for a long war and a prolonged period of isolation from and hostility toward the West. Although Russia has many political, economic, and military weaknesses, it retains the world’s largest arsenal of nuclear weapons. Russia is therefore central to deterrence, arms control, nonproliferation, and nuclear security issues. Furthermore, Moscow’s permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council affords it a veto potentially affecting all these issues.
This document is the compilation of the sampling activities associated with the FY2021 NNSA funded characterization of the 03-0016, Ion Beam facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Included within this document are the radiological and non-radiological sampling plans, results from the executed sampling plans, areas not sampled, summary of findings for each area sampled, and anticipated waste streams.

In December 2020 and March 2021, EPA issued two MS4 strawman permit drafts specific to the Los Alamos area. EPA made text changes in the 2 nd strawman permit based on stakeholder comments related to the initial draft. During the public meeting on the Los Alamos area designation decision held on February 13, 2024, EPA staff stated that comments from the past strawman permits would be incorporated into the new MS4 permit to be issued state-wide. However, it does not appear that any of the text changes from the 2 nd Los Alamos area strawman permit were included in this state-wide general MS4 strawman permit. For reference, the 2 nd Los Alamos area revised strawman permit is included with these comments as Attachment 2. Many of the following comments refer to or state EPA’s updated text included in the 2 nd Los Alamos area strawman permit. The updated text from this 2 nd strawman permit that are referenced in the following comments should be applicable state-wide and it is suggested that this past work be reconsidered and incorporated.
This presentation concludes the final design of TEX with chlorine absorbers is complete. 5 configurations were identified, expected to down select to three experimental configurations. Great comparison to Y-12 and good comparison to INL sensitivities. Fastest configuration touches on the 35 Cl(n,p) cross section (continuing to work with Terrapower for faster configurations). Extensive density studies performed to ensure understanding of the salt in the plates. Reactivity studies performed to assist with experiment. Finally, the fabrication of the chlorine absorbers is ongoing (with LANL), and the experiment is scheduled to be completed this year.
This report focuses on accomplishments and activities completed. Along with leadership/professional developments activities recently completed. It finishes with a look at issues and challenges and upcoming activities.
These couple of weeks I continued doing solvent tests with the 3D printed actuators. I made measurements and organized the data obtained from the tests. I was also able to get a logic gate design that worked according to the logic and was able to start printing and modifying the design. I've been understanding more about what parts of the design it would be best to modify and why certain ideas do not work versus others. I've been communicating with my mentor when I make edits to the design to ensure I keep moving forward with it and make it look closer and closer to what we need it to. I've continued to attend the seminars held by the department and learned more about the different methods of 3d printing and the different projects that are being worked on here.

Core-collapse supernovae are intense sources of tens-of-MeV neutrinos. However, there is no experimental data to validate the current event generator MARLEY (Model of Argon Reaction Low Energy Yields) that can model supernova neutrinos. To validate the model, I developed a new muon capture feature within the MARLEY simulation framework by coding key functions in C++, Python, and ROOT. I generated and analyzed one million simulated muon capture events and comparing the results to experimental data. To improve the model, I worked on optimizing the model’s parameters to improve its precision using statistical methods.
