Hourly natural gas usage surrounding NIST NEB and NWB GHG monitoring stations in 2023

This dataset includes hourly natural gas usage surrounding two National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) greenhouse gas (GHG) monitoring stations, Northwest Baltimore (NWB; 39.3445°N, 76.6851°W) and Northeast Baltimore (NEB; 39.3154°N, 76.5830°W), for the year 2023 in units of therms. The gas usage was provided by the local gas distribution company and includes hourly data averaged across groups of 15 or more addresses to maintain anonymity. The hourly data was averaged spatially within a radius of 1 km from each monitoring station, including all groups containing data from any address within 1km of the monitoring station. This dataset only includes gas usage from service points equipped with advanced metering infrastructure (AMI). Between the two monitoring sites, this dataset includes usage from a total of 3649 service points, which we estimate is at least 44% of the service points in the domain.

Improving Performance via Energy Efficiency JUSTIFI: Open-Source Software for Identifying and Quantifying Non-Energy Benefits

Energy efficiency is pivotal to achieving operational excellence, as it enhances value while reducing waste. This presentation explores the integration of non-energy benefits (NEBs) into energy efficiency projects, which can lead to risk reduction, value creation, and cost savings. By quantifying NEBs - such as improved safety, decreased pollution, and increased productivity - companies can strengthen their business cases for energy investments, ultimately improving payback periods and aligning with strategic goals. Designed for a diverse audience, from trained auditors to novices in energy assessments, we have developed open-source software called JUSTIFI, NEB finding methodology, and training materials which build on existing frameworks and leverages resources from the U.S. Department of Energy and Better Plants energy system analysis software suite such as MEASUR. This work aims to maximize ROI through NEB identification, utilizing tools like JUSTIFI and the NEBs Discovery Protocol.

JUSTIFI: Open-Source Software for Identifying and Quantifying Non-Energy Benefits

The integration of Non-Energy Benefits (NEBs) into energy efficiency initiatives is essential for operational excellence in manufacturing. This presentation and software demonstration explore how quantifying NEBs such as improved safety, increased quality, and enhanced productivity, can strengthen business cases for energy investments, leading to better payback periods and alignment with organizational goals. We introduce JUSTIFI, a free, open-source software by the U.S. Department of Energy that aids in the measurement of NEBs and enhances understanding of their impact on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and return on investment (ROI). JUSTIFI features an intuitive interface for identifying NEBs, customizable reporting tools, and comprehensive system cataloging, empowering companies to effectively communicate the value of energy efficiency projects. By leveraging this innovative tool, organizations can better navigate energy efficiency assessments and drive support for their energy management initiatives.

JUSTIFI: Software for Improving Performance Objectives via Energy Efficiency

With growing energy supply concerns and rising costs, energy efficiency is a critical component of industrial energy resilience and competitiveness by directly reducing energy operating costs. Energy efficiency projects in manufacturing also yield valuable benefits to other key metrics, such as improved quality, reduced maintenance costs, improved safety, decreased pollution, and enhanced productivity. However, it is difficult to receive approval for energy efficiency projects, so implementation rates are low, even when meeting capital project payback period criteria. The inclusion and quantification of non-energy benefits (NEBs) in the decision-making process for energy efficiency projects can improve the overall financial payback period while demonstrating a positive impact on the firm's key performance metrics and business strategy. Despite their significant financial and strategic value, NEBs are rarely factored into decision-making due to lack of tools to effectively identify and quantify them. Therefore, a comprehensive and integrative approach is needed for the rapidly evolving energy landscape. To address these challenges, through funding from U.S. Department of Energy, our new assessment methodology integrates common continuous improvement six sigma concepts, such as the DMAIC process, and a protocol of guiding questions, into energy efficiency assessments to identify NEBs. We have also developed open-source software, JUSTIFI, to guide users through this process, data collection, and quantification. It is designed to be used concurrently with DOE energy system analysis software suite, MEASUR. Our methodology and tools inform energy assessors, firm engineering, decision makers, and workforce seeking to increase energy resilience and to maximize benefits aligned with performance metrics.

SULI Intern Final Report: Computationally Investigating Hydrogen Thermo-Diffusion in Yttrium Hydride Using Multiscale Methods

The renaissance of nuclear energy has arrived, heralding an age of abundant inexpensive clean energy, and renewed space exploration. In nuclear-powered spacecraft and microreactors, safety and size are of utmost importance. Yttrium Hydride (YHx) is being researched for its utility as a neutron moderator in nuclear reactors; the hydrogen in YHx slows down neutrons, enabling a continuous nuclear reaction in the reactor. This has the benefit of allowing reactors to be more safe, compact, and efficient. The goal of this effort is to computationally predict the coefficient of temperature-dependent hydrogen diffusion within YHx, the Soret coefficient. This parameter is essential for determining the safe operating modes of YHx moderators. Zirconium Hydride (ZrHx) is used in the Training, Research, Isotopes, General Atomics (TRIGA) reactor, is the reference material for these calculations. In this work, nanoscale atomic modeling in the Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package (VASP) is combined with the mesoscale finite element phase-field module in the Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE); this culminates in a new multiscale computational method to simulate Soret diffusion of hydrogen in YHx. This data is useful for predicting experimental outcomes. This workflow involves convergence testing followed by static, Nudged Elastic Band (NEB), Quasi-Harmonic Approximation (QHA), and Molecular Dynamics (MD) calculations - linked with phase field simulation. NEB simulates hydrogen migration, while QHA and MD predict temperature-dependent properties. The static calculations align with literature, and preliminary NEB and QHA calculations yield accurate results. Once the atomic calculations are complete, we will incorporate Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) images and VASP-generated parameters into the phase field module to simulate intra- and intergranular transport of hydrogen in ZrHx and YHx. Future research will extend our approach to fuel-moderator materials systems such as Uranium-Yttrium Hydride (U-YHx). This work contributes to the development of advanced nuclear energy solutions for space travel.

Better Climate Challenge Working Groups Non-Energy Benefits of Energy Projects-Improving Financial Payback

Energy efficiency is a key strategy recently identified by the United States Department of Energy as a pillar of industrial decarbonization. For manufacturing companies, improving energy efficiency will reduce money spent on energy utilities such as gas, electricity, and oil. Energy improvement projects also provide valuable benefits outside of simple operating cost reductions, such as reducing the carbon footprint, improving safety metrics and even enhancing quality and productivity. Unfortunately, energy efficiency projects have typically faced an adoption gap, even when they meet criteria such as payback period for capital projects. The inclusion and quantification of non-energy benefits (NEBs), also known as co-benefits, in the decision-making process for energy efficiency projects can improve the overall financial payback periods for those projects as well as potentially improve the company's key performance metrics aligned with business strategies. There are no readily available tools that facilitate this, however, and the most used tools for energy audits address NEBs in a perfunctory way if at all. We integrated research for finding and quantifying non-energy benefits of energy efficiency projects into a commonly recognized continuous improvement practice, the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control (DMAIC) Process. This process, along with software and supplemental materials, guides energy assessments to find and to quantify NEBs associated with energy conservation opportunities. Our aim is to deliver an easy to use and effective process and software tool and to maximize return on investment for energy efficiency projects as well as contribute to companies' strategic performance goals.

Energetics of the nucleation and glide of disconnection modes in symmetric tilt grain boundaries

Grain boundaries (GBs) evolve by the nucleation and glide of disconnections, which are dislocations with a step character. In this work, motivated by recent success in predicting GB properties such as the shear coupling factor and mobility from the intrinsic properties of disconnections, we develop a systematic method to calculate the energy barriers for the nucleation and glide of individual disconnection modes under arbitrary driving forces and a quasi-2D setting. This method combines tools from bicrystallography to enumerate disconnection modes and the Nudged elastic band (NEB) method to calculate their energetics, yielding minimum energy paths and atomistic mechanisms for the nucleation and glide of each disconnection mode. We apply the method to accurately predict shear coupling factors of $[001]$ symmetric tilt grain boundaries in Cu. Particular attention is paid to the boundaries where the dislocation-based disconnection nucleation model produces incorrect nucleation barriers. We demonstrate that the method can accurately compute energy barriers and predict shear-coupling factors in the low-temperature regime. For certain disconnection modes in which the assumptions underlying our method do not hold, we report upper bounds on the energy barriers for disconnection nucleation and glide. In addition, the NEB trajectories reveal interesting phenomena such as the dissociation of a higher energy mode into lower energy modes, and in some cases, shear coupling being mediated by partial disconnections, wherein the GB structure temporarily changes to a metastable state before reverting back to its original structure. Defect Diffusion Graph Neural Networks for Materials Discovery in High-Temperature Energy Applications

Here, the migration of crystallographic defects dictates material properties and performance for a plethora of technological applications. Density functional theory (DFT)-based nudged elastic band (NEB) calculations are a powerful computational technique for predicting defect migration activation energy barriers, yet they become prohibitively expensive for high-throughput screening of defect diffusivities. Without introducing hand-crafted (i.e., chemistry- or structure-specific) descriptors, we propose a generalized deep learning approach to train surrogate models for NEB energies of vacancy migration by hybridizing graph neural networks with transformer encoders and simply using pristine host structures as input. With sufficient training data, computationally efficient and simultaneous inference of vacancy defect thermodynamics and migration activation energies can be obtained to compute temperature-dependent vacancy diffusivities and to down-select candidates for more thorough DFT analysis or experiments. Thus, as we specifically demonstrate for potential water-splitting materials, candidates with desired defect thermodynamics, kinetics, and host stability properties can be more rapidly targeted from open-source databases of experimentally validated or hypothetical materials.

Direct Deoxygenation of Phenol over Fe-Based Bimetallic Surfaces Using On-the-Fly Surrogate Models

We present an accelerated nudged elastic band (NEB) study of phenol direct deoxygenation (DDO) on Fe-based bimetallic surfaces using a recently developed Gaussian process regression (GPR) calculator. Our test calculations demonstrate that the GPR calculator achieves up to 3 times speedup compared to conventional density functional theory calculations while maintaining high accuracy, with energy barrier errors below 0.015 eV. Using GPR-NEB, we systematically examine the DDO mechanism on pure Fe(110) and surfaces modified with Co and Ni in both top and subsurface layers. Our results show that subsurface Co and Ni substitutions preserve favorable thermodynamics and kinetics for both C–O bond cleavage and C–H bond formation, comparable to those on the pure Fe(110) surface. In contrast, top-layer substitutions generally increase the C–O bond cleavage barrier, render the step endothermic, and result in significantly higher reverse reaction rates, making DDO unfavorable on these surfaces. This work demonstrates the effectiveness of GRR-accelerated transition state searches for complex surface reactions and provides insights into rational design of bimetallic catalysts for selective deoxygenation.

Revealing short- and long-range Li-ion diffusion in Li 2 MnO 3 from finite-temperature dynamical mean field theory

Li 2 MnO 3 is a key component of Li-excess layered cathodes of the form (1 − x), LiMO 2 + x, Li 2 MnO 3 (M = Mn, Ni, Co, …), yet its role in setting Li-ion transport limitations remains under debate. Here, in this study, we combine DFT+U, finite-temperature DFT+DMFT with a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver, and nudged-elastic-band (NEB) calculations to study Li + migration in paramagnetic Li 2 MnO 3 in the presence of a single Li vacancy. Evaluating DMFT total energies along the DFT+U NEB geometries reveals that dynamical correlations strongly renormalize the lowest-barrier processes, reducing the activation energies to E a = 0.18 eV for the shortest-range hop and E a = 0.50 eV for the next-lowest (transport-controlling) step. The 0.18 eV barrier quantitatively reproduces the short-range activation energy from µ+SR, while the 0.50 eV barrier is consistent with the long-range transport scale extracted from ac-impedance measurements. This single-vacancy, paramagnetic DMFT description thus provides a unified interpretation of local and macroscopic probes without invoking clustered vacancy configurations or strong extrinsic disorder, consistent with nearly stoichiometric Li 2 MnO 3 powders. More broadly, our results highlight finite-temperature dynamical correlations as an essential ingredient for predicting ionic migration energetics in correlated oxide electrodes.

Prediction of vacancy defect diffusion paths in high entropy alloys via machine learning on molecular dynamics data

Identifying the diffusion path of point defects is a critical step in understanding their evolution and the mechanisms of related phenomena. Defect diffusion occurs at small length and time scales, with impacts on material properties that may continue to evolve over ns to μs, ms, and the continuum scale (s, min, etc., and cm, m, etc.). The time scale accessible to molecular dynamics (MD) simulations is limited by small step sizes, typically in the fs range. Thus, surrogate models of MD simulations through machine learning (ML)-based algorithms are of great interest, especially for complex systems such as high entropy alloys (HEAs). In this work, dynamics governing vacancy migration in HEA were approximated with graph convolutional network (GCN) models as ansatzes for kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) rate catalogs. Network design considered that diffusion in crystalline solids generally depends on interactions between defects and their immediate neighbor atoms. Graphs represented the vacancy surroundings, MD-generated trajectories provided training and comparison datasets, and unsupervised GCN models approximated interatomic dynamics governing vacancy migration in HEAs as ansatzes for KMC. A proof-of-concept model trained on MD data for the Fe, Ni, Cr, Co, and Cu HEA environment was used with two different neighbor interactions to assess the feasibility of training a GCN to predict vacancy defect transition rates in the HEA environment. The resulting setup rapidly generated MD-formatted synthetic trajectories based on dynamics learned from the MD training set, with a time acceleration of roughly two orders of magnitude and a similar diffusion coefficient to MD observations. Additionally, Nudged Elastic Band (NEB) calculations were performed on randomly generated FeNiCrCoCu HEA structures to determine vacancy migration barriers across nearest-neighbor sites. Transition probabilities for each jump, categorized by atomic type, were extracted from these calculations. NEB-based and GCN-based approaches led to similar outcomes.

Lattice vacancy migration barriers in Fe-Ni alloys, and an indication as to why Ni atoms diffuse slowly: A first-principles study

Lattice vacancy migration barriers in ferromagnetic Fe 𝑥 ⁢Ni 1−𝑥 alloys (0.4 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 0.6) are accurately quantified within the framework of ab initio electronic structure calculations using the nudged elastic band (NEB) method. Both the atomically disordered (A1) fcc phase, as well as the atomically ordered, tetragonal L⁢1 0 phase—which is under consideration as a material for a rare-earth-free gap magnet for advanced engineering applications—are investigated. Across an ensemble of NEB calculations performed on supercell configurations spanning a range of compositions and containing disordered, partially ordered, and fully ordered structures, we find that Ni-vacancy interchanges encounter significantly higher energetic barriers than do Fe-vacancy interchanges. We contend that this aspect is a key factor in determining the differences in mobility between Fe and Ni atoms in this ferromagnetic alloy. Moreover, we are able to interpret these findings in terms of the ferromagnetic alloy's underlying spin-polarized electronic structure. Specifically, we report a coupling between the size of local lattice distortions and the magnitude of the local electronic spin polarization around vacancies. This causes Fe atoms to relax into lattice vacancies, while Ni atoms remain rigidly fixed to their original lattice positions. These results give atomic-scale insight into the longstanding experimental observation that Ni exhibits remarkably slow atomic diffusion in Fe-Ni alloys.

Diffusion Behavior of Oversized Fission Products in bcc Fe Cladding: A First-Principles Study

Fuel-Cladding Chemical Interaction (FCCI) poses significant challenges in nuclear reactors, where fission products from nuclear fuel interact with Fe-based cladding materials, potentially compromising their structural integrity. This study investigates the diffusion behavior of oversized fission products, Pr, Nd, Ce, and La, within bcc Fe cladding using density functional theory (DFT), nudged elastic band (NEB) method, and self-consistent mean field (SCMF) theory. Our results reveal significant long-range vacancy binding energies, particularly up to the 6th nearest neighbor, with La exhibiting the strongest binding affinity, followed by Nd, Ce, and Pr. The NEB calculations indicate significant high barriers for the dissociation of 1nn vacancy-solute pairs for all fission products. The tracer diffusion coefficients of these fission products was derived in Arrhenius form. The significant trapping effect of vacancies by a very dilute amount of fission products reduces vacancy mobility, leading to an oversaturation of point defects, void nucleation, and swelling. These are critical issues for irradiated cladding materials. The tracer diffusion coefficients indicate that Nd diffuses the fastest, followed by La, Ce, and Pr. This study provides essential insights for developing advanced cladding materials and design strategies to mitigate FCCI, ultimately enhancing nuclear reactor safety and performance.

GPR_calculator: An on-the-fly surrogate model to accelerate massive nudged elastic band calculations

We present GPR_calculator, a package based on Python and C++ programming languages to build an on-the-fly surrogate model using Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) to approximate computationally expensive electronic structure calculations. The key idea is to dynamically train a GPR model during the simulation that can accurately predict energies and forces with uncertainty quantification. When the uncertainty is high, the costly electronic structure calculation is performed to obtain the ground truth data, which is then used to update the GPR model. To illustrate the effectiveness of GPR_calculator, we demonstrate its application in Nudged Elastic Band (NEB) simulations of surface diffusion and reactions, achieving 3-10 times acceleration compared to pure ab initio calculations. Evaluating Material Design Principles for Calcium-Ion Mobility in Intercalation Cathodes

Multivalent-ion batteries offer an alternative to Li-based technologies, with the potential for greater sustainability, improved safety, and higher energy density, primarily due to their rechargeable system featuring a passivating metal anode. Although a system based on the Ca 2+ /Ca couple is particularly attractive given the low electrochemical plating potential of Ca 2+ , the remaining challenge for a viable rechargeable Ca battery is to identify Ca cathodes with fast ion transport. In this work, a high-throughput computational pipeline is adapted to (1) discover novel Ca cathodes in a largely unexplored space of empty intercalation hosts and (2) develop material design rules for Ca-ion mobility. One candidate from the screening, W 2 O 3 (PO 4 ) 2 , is confirmed to have a low Nudged Elastic Band (NEB) barrier of 168 meV within a one-dimensional (1D) ion percolation topology. This candidate is subsequently synthesized and electrochemically tested, achieving reversible Ca cycling with a capacity of 25 mA h/g. To further accelerate the screening for promising Ca intercalation electrodes, machine learning (ML) Random Forest (RF) and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB) classification models are created with local environment descriptors based on a large, structurally and chemically diverse dataset of minimum energy pathways, spanning over 5,000 density functional theory (DFT) site energy calculations. Accuracies of 92% are achieved, material design metrics are quantified, ML force-fields are leveraged in an accelerated iteration of the screening, and a total of 27 novel Ca cathode materials are highlighted for further investigation.

Accelerating Instanton Theory with the Line Integral Nudged Elastic Band Method and Gaussian Process Regression

Quantum tunneling plays a fundamental role in many chemical reactions, particularly proton transfer processes. Ring polymer instanton theory offers a practical framework for computing tunneling rates in complex molecular systems. However, applying the ring polymer instanton method with a potential energy surface generated on-the-fly using electronic structure calculations can be computationally demanding. Here, in this work, we present a new efficient implementation of the ring polymer instanton method by combining the Line Integral Nudged Elastic Band (LI-NEB) approach with Gaussian Process Regression (GPR). We benchmarked this method on prototypical ground-state proton transfer systems, including the benchmark gas-phase hydrogen abstraction reaction H + CH 4 → H 2 + CH 3 , malonaldehyde, and Z-3-amino-propenal (aminopropenal). Our results show that this approach is an order of magnitude faster than traditional instanton algorithms while maintaining excellent agreement with their tunneling rates. This development opens the door to studying proton transfer in larger systems with improved efficiency.

Energy Barriers for H 2 Uptake and Release by Defects in Boron Nitride

Density functional theory simulations (DFT) have been used in combination with the climbing image nudged elastic band method (CI-NEB) to determine the energy barriers required to dissociate H 2 at four types of h-BN defects and evaluate the potential for reacted H species to hop to adjacent available sites. The defects were selected based on previous work in which ab initio thermodynamics was used to identify specific defects with optimal thermodynamics for reversible H 2 storage, that is, the defects would dissociate molecular H 2 while not binding H species too strongly so that hydrogen release is favorable. The four defects investigated are the N and B monovacancies, which only offer either B or N defective sites respectively, as well as larger cluster vacancy defects named 3V(1B2N) and hexagonal 6V(3B3N), which present a mixture of B and N defect sites available for H binding. While homogeneous H 2 dissociation by B and N monovacancies have energy barriers larger than 0.4 eV, we found that mixed BN terminated defects have energy barrier lower than 0.4 eV for H 2 dissociation. In particular, H 2 dissociation by the hexagonal 6V(3B3N) defect, exclusively made of Frustrated Lewis Pairs (FLPs), is almost barrierless. The energy barrier for subsequent H hopping to available adjacent B or N sites of the defect were also calculated. It was found that the hopping of H species generally involves high energy barriers ranging from 0.26 eV to 2.57 eV. In conclusion, this work completes previous thermodynamic theoretical investigations and provides a more comprehensive picture of H 2 reaction with defective h-BN for potential H 2 storage and recovery.
