Noise and loss in balanced and subharmonically pumped mixers. I - Theory. II - Application

The theory of noise and frequency conversion for two-diode balanced and subharmonically pumped mixers is presented. The analysis is based on the equivalent circuit of the Schottky diode, having nonlinear capacitance, series resistance, and shot and thermal noise. Expressions for the conversion loss, noise temperature, and input and output impedances are determined in a form suitable for numerical analysis. In Part II, the application of the theory to practical mixers is demonstrated, and the properties of some two-diode mixers are examined. The subharmonically pumped mixer is found to be much more strongly affected by the loop inductance than the balanced mixer, and the ideal two-diode mixer using exponential diodes has a multiport noise-equivalent network (attenuator) similar to that of the ideal single-diode mixer. It is concluded that the theory can be extended to mixers with more than two diodes and will be useful for their design and analysis, provided a suitable nonlinear analysis is available to determine the diode waveforms.

Fabrication and Performance of Planar Schottky Diodes with T-gate-like Anodes in 200 GHz Subharmonically-Pumped Waveguide Mixers

A T-gate-like structure has been developed, fabricated and tested as the anode for millimeter and submillimeter-wave Schottky diodes. The low parasitics of the T-anode diodes yield extremely high cutoff frequencies, making the diodes useable at frequencies well beyond 1 THz. The diodes were tested as an antiparallel-pair, integrated monolithically with microstrip circuitry on a quartz substrate, in a subharmonically pumped waveguide mixer. A double sideband noise temperature of 600 K with a conversion loss of 4.7 dB were measured at 200 GHz. This is believed to be the lowest noise temperature ever reported for a room temperature subharmonically-pumped Schottky diode mixer at this frequency.

Thermodynamic Vent System Test in a Low Earth Orbit Simulation

A thermodynamic vent system for a cryogenic nitrogen tank was tested in a vacuum chamber simulating oxygen storage in low earth orbit. The nitrogen tank was surrounded by a cryo-shroud at -40 F. The tank was insulated with two layers of multi-layer insulation. Heat transfer into cryogenic tanks causes phase change and increases tank pressure which must be controlled. A thermodynamic vent system was used to control pressure as the location of vapor is unknown in low gravity and direct venting would be wasteful. The thermodynamic vent system consists of a Joule-Thomson valve and heat exchanger installed on the inlet side of the tank mixer-pump. The combination is used to extract thermal energy from the tank fluid, reducing temperature and ullage pressure. The system was sized so that the tank mixer-pump operated a small fraction of the time to limit motor heating. Initially the mixer used sub-cooled liquid to cool the liquid-vapor interface inducing condensation and pressure reduction. Later, the thermodynamic vent system was used. Pressure cycles were performed until steady-state operation was demonstrated. Three test runs were conducted at tank fills of 97, 80, and 63 percent. Each test was begun with a boil-off test to determine heat transfer into the tank. The lower tank fills had time averaged vent rates very close to steady-state boil-off rates showing the thermodynamic vent system was nearly as efficient as direct venting in normal gravity.

A Unique 520-590 GHz Biased Subharmonically-pumped Schottky Mixer

We report on the design and performance of a novel broadband, biased, subharmonic 520-590 GHz fix-tuned frequency mixer that utilizes planar Schottky diodes. The suspended stripline circuit is fabricated on a GaAs membrane mounted in a split waveguide block. The chip is supported by thick beam leads that are also used to provide precise radio frequency (RF) grounding, RF coupling and dc/intermediate frequency connections. At room temperature, the mixer has a measured double sideband noise temperature of 3000 to 4000 K across the design band.

Space LOX vent system

The research of the program to design and build a prototype vent system capable of exhausting only vapor to space from an all liquid or two-phase mixture of oxygen, while operating under low or zero-gravity conditions is reported. Work performed during the detail design phase of the program was concerned with the finalization of vent system performance, development of component specifications, solicitation of vendor bids, selection of components and overall system package design. The compact system preliminary design defined for the comparisons was reviewed in light of a desirability to demonstrate complete tank mixing at one-g. Also, performance of the system at low-g conditions with a full tank and maximum temperature stratification or maximum pressure rise between vent cycles was investigated. It was found that under these extreme conditions, not previously considered, that use of a larger pump mixer than previously defined would be desirable. In addition, to simplify ground testing with only a small weight penalty, the exchanger vent pressure was increased from 5 psia to 22 psia nominal. This resulted in less than a 0.2% increase in system weight.

Research in millimeter wave techniques

Subharmonically pumped mixers were ascended and tested. A computerized version of the automatic noise figure measurement system was developed. Impedance matching techniques suitable for these types of mixers were investigated. Narrow and broadband (one octave) matching networks for the subharmonic mixers were designed. The automatic mixer noise figure test facility was completed. Subharmonic mixers and the systems that use them at 183 and 220 GHz were evaluated and characterized.

Space Cryogenics Workshop, 10th, Cleveland, OH, June 18-20, 1991, Proceedings

The present workshop on cryogenics discusses the anomalous on-orbit behavior of the Cosmic Background Explorer Dewar, the SHOOT orbital operations, cooling options for Astromag, and space IR telescope facility mission and cryogenic design. Attention is given to the design of a spaceworthy adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator, the evaluation of metal hydride compressors for applications in Joule-Thomson cryocoolers, diaphragm Stirling cryocooler developments, and a computer simulation model for Stirling refrigerators. Topics addressed include low-gravity thermal stratification of liquid helium on SHOOT, a screening program to select a resin for gravity probe-B composites, a simplified generic cryostat thermal model for predicting cryogen mass and lifetime, and the effect of gas mass flux on cryogenic liquid jet breakup. Also discussed are damping criteria for thermal acoustic oscillations in slush and liquid hydrogen systems, an STS-based cryogenic fluid management experiment, and the design and testing of a cryogenic mixer pump.

Terahertz local oscillator for the Microwave Limb Sounder on the Aura satellite

The Microwave Limb Sounder on the Aura satellite has a radiometer at 2.5 THz to perform global mapping of OH in the atmosphere. The OH radiometer utilizes two Schottky-diode mixers pumped by an optically pumped THz gas laser local oscillator. The laser was first turned on in space on July 22, 2004, and has performed without issue for more than 30 months. The specifications, design, and modeling of this 2.5 THz laser local oscillator are presented here, along with some of the important design validation and test results.

Characteristics of a Josephson junction harmonic mixer with external pumping

Numerical calculations are carried out on harmonic mixing with an externally pumped Josephson junction. Bias conditions for optimum conversion efficiency are studied for a variety of junction parameters. The predicted noise temperature for harmonic mixing is compared with that for fundamental mixing at the same signal frequency.

THz Limb Sounder (TLS) for Lower Thermospheric Wind, Oxygen Density, and Temperature

Neutral winds are one of the most critical measurements in the lower thermosphere and E region ionosphere (LTEI) for understanding complex electrodynamic processes and ion-neutral interactions. We are developing a high-sensitivity, low-power, noncryogenic 2.06 THz Schottky receiver to measure wind profiles at 100-140 km. The new technique, THz limb sounder (TLS), aims to measure LTEI winds by resolving the wind-induced Doppler shift of 2.06 THz atomic oxygen (OI) emissions. As a transition between fine structure levels in the ground electronic state, the OI emission is in local thermodynamic equilibrium(LTE) at altitudes up to 350km. This LTE property, together with day-and-night capability and small line-of-sight gradient, makes the OI limb sounding a very attractive technique for neutral wind observations. In addition to the wind measurement, TLS can also retrieve [OI] density and neutral temperature in the LTEI region. TLS leverages rapid advances in THz receiver technologies including subharmonically pumped (SHP)mixers and Schottky-diode-based power multipliers. Current SHP Schottky receivers have produced good sensitivity for THz frequencies at ambient environment temperatures (120-150 K), which are achievable through passively cooling in spaceflight. As an emerging technique, TLS can fill the critical data gaps in the LTEI neutral wind observations to enable detailed studies on the coupling and dynamo processes between charged and neutral molecules.
