Mg2Si As Li-Intercalation Host For Li Cells

Compound Mg2Si shows promise as lithium-intercalation host for ambient-temperature rechargeable lithium electrochemical cells. As anode reactant material, LiXMg2Si chemically stable in presence of organic electrolyte used in such cells and stores large amounts of lithium. Intercalation reactions highly reversible at room temperature. Also retains sufficient mechanical strength during charge/discharge cycling. Lithium cells containing LixMg2Si anodes prove useful in spacecraft, military, communications, automotive, and other applications in which high energy-storage densities of lithium cells in general and rechargeability of cells needed.

Multilayer mirrors and filters for imaging the earth's inner magnetosphere

The requirements for imaging the inner magnetosphere in the light of 304-A He(+) emission are examined. The expected EUV emission spectrum of the inner magnetosphere is used to establish guidelines for the performance of the imager's multilayer mirrors and filters. The design of multilayer mirrors and the results of a computer search that determines the best multilayer mirror design for this application are discussed. B4C, Be, Si, and SiC are identified as promising top-layer materials for a multilayer 304-A mirror, while Al, Mg, and Mg2Si are recommended for other layers. Si-passivated Te and a combination of Al or Si with B or C are promising filter materials for this application.

Nucleation of the diamond phase in aluminium-solid solutions

Precipitation was studied from fcc solid solutions with silicon, germanium, copper and magnesium. Of all these elements only silicon and germanium form diamond cubic (DC) precipitates in fcc Al. Nucleation of the DC structure is enhanced if both types of atom are dissolved in the fcc lattice. This is interpreted as due to atomic size effects in the prenucleation stage. There are two modes of interference of fourth elements with nucleation of the DC phase in Al + Si, Ge. The formation of the DC phase is hardly affected if the atoms (for example, copper) are rejected from the (Si, Ge)-rich clusters. If additional types of atom are attracted by silicon and/or germanium, DC nuclei are replaced by intermetallic compounds (for example Mg2Si).

Anode for rechargeable ambient temperature lithium cells

An ambient room temperature, high density, rechargeable lithium battery includes a Li(x)Mg2Si negative anode which intercalates lithium to form a single crystalline phase when x is up to 1.0 and an amorphous phase when x is from 1 to 2.0. The electrode has good reversibility and mechanical strength after cycling.
