Advanced quantitative magnetic nondestructive evaluation methods - Theory and experiment

The paper reviews the scale of fatigue crack phenomena in relation to the size detection capabilities of nondestructive evaluation methods. An assessment of several features of fatigue in relation to the inspection of ball and roller bearings suggested the use of magnetic methods; magnetic domain phenomena including the interaction of domains and inclusions, and the influence of stress and magnetic field on domains are discussed. Experimental results indicate that simplified calculations can be used to predict many features of these results; the data predicted by analytic models which use finite element computer analysis predictions do not agree with respect to certain features. Experimental analyses obtained on rod-type fatigue specimens which show experimental magnetic measurements in relation to the crack opening displacement and volume and crack depth should provide methods for improved crack characterization in relation to fracture mechanics and life prediction.

Lunar paleointensity from three Apollo 15 crystalline rocks using an A.R.M. method

An anhysteretic remanent magnetization method described by Banerjee and Mellema (1974) is used in the lunar paleointensity studies reported. The range of the difference in the paleointensity values obtained by the new method is not quite as great as the range of differences ordinarily found in values determined with the conventional method reported by Thellier and Thellier (1959). The results of the investigation show that the three Apollo 15 rocks studied acquired their natural remanent magnetization in a finite-sized magnetic field which was two or three orders of magnitude greater than the present ambient interplanetary field at the moon.

Method for reducing snap in magnetic amplifiers

Method of reducing snap in magnetic amplifiers uses a degenerative feedback circuit consisting of a resistor and a separate winding on a magnetic core. The feedback circuit extends amplifier range by allowing it to be used at lower values of output current.

Data use investigation for the magnetic field satellite (MAGSAT) mission: Geomagnetic field forecasting and fluid dynamics of the core

MAGSAT data were used to construct a variety of spherical harmonic models of the main geomagnetic field emanating from Earth's liquid core at poch 1980. These models were used to: (1) accurately determine the radius of Earth's core by a magnetic method, (2) calculate estimates, of the long-term ange of variation of geomagnetic Gauss coefficients; (3) establish a preferred truncation level for current spherical harmonic models of the main geomagnetic field from the core; (4) evaluate a method for taking account of electrical conduction in the mantle when the magnetic field is downward continued to the core-mantle boundary; and (5) establish that upwelling and downwelling of fluid motion at the top of the core is probably detectable, observationally. A fluid dynamics forecast model was not produced because of insufficient data.

Studies related to the surfaces of the moon and planets

A variety of glasses of lunar composition were prepared with different amounts of Fe and Ti under both reducing and oxidizing conditions, and also by sputter-deposition and thermal evaporation and condensation. These materials were analyzed by wet chemical, electron microprobe, ESR, Mossbauer and magnetic methods. The effects of darkening processes on surface soils of airless bodies are discussed along with the effects of vapor phase deposition processes on the optical, chemical, and magnetic properties of the lunar regolith.

Hexapole magnet field analysis

Method rotates magnet about a wire loop of rectangular shape placed inside the pole tips and measures induced loop voltage with a wave analyzer. Quantitative field characteristics are determined from voltage induced at various harmonics of the rotation frequency.

A method of inversion of satellite magnetic anomaly data

A method of finding a first approximation to a crustal magnetization distribution from inversion of satellite magnetic anomaly data is described. Magnetization is expressed as a Fourier Series in a segment of spherical shell. Input to this procedure is an equivalent source representation of the observed anomaly field. Instability of the inversion occurs when high frequency noise is present in the input data, or when the series is carried to an excessively high wave number. Preliminary results are given for the United States and adjacent areas.

Magnetically actuated tuning method for Gunn oscillators

A tunable microwave generator based on the Gunn effect is disclosed. The generator includes a semiconductor material which exhibits the Gunn effect when current flows between anode and cathode end contacts. The material has a plurality of sides each with a scratch at a different distance from the anode contact. A magnetic field is produced by a magnet placed about the semiconductor field. The Lorentz force produced as a function of the current flow and the magnetic field drive the electrons to the surface of one of the sides to cause nucleation to occur at the scratch. A domain formed thereat travels to the anode contact to provide pulses at a frequency which is related to the distance between the scratch and the anode contact.

An improved method for measuring the magnetic inhomogeneity shift in hydrogen masers

The reported method makes it possible to conduct all maser frequency measurements under conditions of low magnetic field intensity for which the hydrogen maser is most stable. Aspects concerning the origin of the magnetic inhomogeneity shift are examined and the available approaches for measuring this shift are considered, taking into account certain drawbacks of currently used methods. An approach free of these drawbacks can be based on the measurement of changes in a parameter representing the difference between the number of atoms in the involved states.

The mean magnetic field of the sun - Method of observation and relation to the interplanetary magnetic field

The mean solar magnetic field as measured in integrated light has been observed since 1968. Since 1970 it has been observed both at Hale Observatories and at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory. The observing procedures at both observatories and their implications for mean field measurements are discussed. A comparison of the two sets of daily observations shows that similar results are obtained at both observatories. A comparison of the mean field with the interplanetary magnetic polarity shows that the IMF sector structure has the same pattern as the mean field polarity.

Practical and efficient magnetic heat pump

Method for pumping heat magnetically at room temperature is more economical than existing refrigeration systems. Method uses natural magneto-thermal effect of gadolinium metal to establish temperature gradient across length of tube. Regenerative cyclic process in which gadolinium sample is magnetized and gives off heat at one end of tube, and then is demagnetized at other end to absorb heat has established temperature gradients of 144 degrees F in experiments near room temperature. Other materials with large magnetothermal effects can be used below room temperature. Possible commercial applications include freeze-drying and food processing, cold storage, and heating and cooling of buildings, plants, and ships.
