Implementation of a Relay Coordination System for the Mars Network

Mars network relay operations involve the coordination of lander and orbiter teams through long-term and short-term planning, tactical changes and post-pass analysis. Much of this coordination is managed through email traffic and point-to-point file data exchanges. It is often difficult to construct a complete and accurate picture of the relay situation at any given moment, as there is no centralized store of correlated relay data. The Mars Relay Operations Service (MaROS) is being implemented to address the problem of relay coordination for current and next-generation relay missions. The service is provided for the purpose of coordinating communications sessions between landed spacecraft assets and orbiting spacecraft assets at Mars. The service centralizes a set of functions previously distributed across multiple spacecraft operations teams, and as such greatly improves visibility into the end-to-end strategic coordination process. Most of the process revolves around the scheduling of communications sessions between the spacecraft during periods of time when a landed asset on Mars is geometrically visible by an orbiting spacecraft. These "relay" sessions are used to transfer data both to and from the landed asset via the orbiting asset on behalf of Earth-based spacecraft operators. This paper will discuss the relay coordination problem space, overview the architecture and design selected to meet system requirements, and describe the first phase of system implementation

Constellation Design of the Mars Network

Mars has become the focus of an unprecedented series of missions spanning many years, involving numerous nations and evolving from robotics to humans.

Navigation services of the Mars Network

The Mars Network provides proximity based communications and navigation services to support Mars exploration. The network will be comprised of science orbiters with a MN relay transceiver, and potentially, dedicated telecommunication orbiters. The common MN transceiver, called Electra, is currently in deployment, and is being designed for both communications and radiometric tracking.

The Mars Telecommunications Orbiter a key asset in the Mars Network

The Mars Telecommunications Orbiter (MTO) to be launched in 2009 will play a key role in the Mars Network since it will be the first interplanetary mission whose primary objective is to provide communications to existing and upcoming Mars missions, This paper presents a basic description of the primary mission an provides trajectory information for the Mars Telecommunication Orbiter.

Real Time Mars Approach Navigation Aided by the Mars Network

A NASA Mars technology project is described that is building a prototype embedded real time Mars approach navigation capability which can be hosted on the Mars Network's Electra transceiver. The paper motivates the reason for doing real time Mars approach navigation via a set of analyses demonstrating its utility for enabling Mars pin-point landing (< 1-km landing error). The development approach, software design, and test results are discussed. Finally, the way forward towards a flight demonstration on the Mars Science Laboratory is presented.

Real Time Mars Approach Navigation Aided by the Mars Network

A NASA Mars technology project is described that is building a prototype embedded real time Mars approach navigation capability which can be hosted on the Mars Network's Electra transceiver. The paper motivates the reason for doing real time Mars approach navigation via a set of analyses demonstrating its utility for enabling Mars pin-point landing (less than 1-km landing error). The development approach, software design, and test results are discussed. Finally, the way forward towards a flight demonstration on the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) is presented.

Development of a Relay Performance Web Tool for the Mars Network

Modern Mars surface missions rely upon orbiting spacecraft to relay communications to and from Earth systems. An important component of this multi-mission relay process is the collection of relay performance statistics supporting strategic trend analysis and tactical anomaly identification and tracking.

The Use of Eccentric and Circular Orbits in the Design of a Mars Network Constellation

This study examined different constellation configurations to determine their suitability for the Mars Network. Some variations on the baseline case of four circular orbits were initially studied. Eccentric orbits were then used to determine their effects on several figures of merit that were selected as representative of the design goals. It was eventually found that the use of eccentric orbits in combination with circular orbits can improve aspects of some navigation and communication figures of merit. The ability to use orbits at different inclinations helps smooth coverage over the middle and upper latitudes for these figures of merit. This configuration has more variability than one consisting of circular orbits, so the occurrence of unfavorable arrangements also results in degradation of some figures of merit. Some cases were used which improved different figures of merit, so a solution could be chosen depending on specified requirements.

Mars Network: Strategies for Deploying Enabling Telecommunications Capabilities in Support of Mars Exploration

The coming decade of Mars exploration will involve a diverse set of robotic science missions, including in situ and sample return investigations, and ultimately moving towards sustained robotic presence on the Martian surface. In supporting this mission set, NASA must establish a robust telecommunications architecture that meets the specific science needs of near-term missions while enabling new methods of future exploration. This paper will assess the anticipated telecommunications needs of future Mars exploration, examine specific options for deploying capabilities, and quantify the performance of these options in terms of key figures of merit.
