Majorana phases beyond neutrinoless double beta decay

The ν M SM is defined as the SM extended to include dimension-5 operators. In this model neutrino masses violate lepton number, and two parameters of the lepton mixing matrix, the Majorana phases, are yet to be constrained. One combination of these phases and the neutrino masses, often denoted by m ee , is probed by neutrinoless double beta decays (0νββ). We explore what information may be obtained beyond 0νββ, and how it depends on the lightest neutrino mass. We point out that with current central values of the mixing parameters, ΔL e = 2 and ΔL e = ΔL μ = 1 (or ΔL e = 2 and ΔL μ = 2) processes cannot simultaneously vanish, providing a no-lose theorem, in principle, for excluding the ν M SM, even in the case of normal mass ordering.

Three-flavor, full momentum space neutrino spin oscillations in neutron star mergers

In the presence of anisotropic neutrino and antineutrino fluxes, the quantum kinetic equations drive coherent oscillations in neutrino helicity, frequently referred to as spin oscillations. These oscillations depend directly on the absolute mass scale and Majorana phase, but are usually too transient to produce important effects. In this paper we present a full momentum-space analysis of Majorana neutrino spin oscillations in a snapshot of a three-dimensional neutron star merger simulation. We find an interesting angular dependence that allows for that resonant and adiabatic oscillations to occur along specific directions in a large volume of the merger remnant. The solid angle spanned by these directions is extremely narrow in general. We then analyze spin transformation in the presence of flavor transformation by characterizing how the effect's resonance and timescale change during a fast flavor instability. For this analysis, we derive a generalized resonance condition that poses a restrictive requirement for resonance to exist in any flavor channel. Finally, we determine that spin oscillations at all locations in the merger snapshot have a length scale that is too large for significant oscillations to be expected even where there exist resonant and adiabatic directions.

Leptonic sum rules from flavour models with modular symmetries

Sum rules in the lepton sector provide an extremely valuable tool to classify flavour models in terms of relations between neutrino masses and mixing parameters testable in a plethora of experiments. In this manuscript we identify new leptonic sum rules arising in models with modular symmetries with residual symmetries. These models simultaneously present neutrino mass sum rules, involving masses and Majorana phases, and mixing sum rules, connecting the mixing angles and the Dirac CP-violating phase. The simultaneous appearance of both types of sum rules leads to some non-trivial interplay, for instance, the allowed absolute neutrino mass scale exhibits a dependence on the Dirac CP-violating phase. We derive analytical expressions for these novel sum rules and present their allowed parameter ranges as well as their predictions at upcoming neutrino experiments.

Survey of neutrino flavor predictions and the neutrinoless double beta decay funnel

The neutrinoless double beta decay experimental effort continues to make tremendous progress with hopes of covering the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy in coming years and pushing from the quasidegenerate hierarchy into the normal hierarchy. As neutrino oscillation data are starting to suggest that the mass ordering may be normal, we may well be faced with staring down the funnel of death: a region of parameter space in the normal ordering where—for a particular cancellation among the absolute neutrino mass scale, the Majorana phases, and the oscillation parameters—the neutrinoless double beta decay rate may be vanishingly small. To answer the question of whether this region of parameter space is theoretically preferred, we survey five broad categories of flavor model structures which make various different predictions for parameters relevant for neutrinoless double beta decay to determine how likely it is that the rate may be in this funnel region. We find that a non-negligible fraction of predictions surveyed are at least partially in the funnel region. Our results can guide model builders and experimentalists alike in focusing their efforts on theoretically motivated regions of parameter space. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Interaction-induced topological phase transition and Majorana edge states in low-dimensional orbital-selective Mott insulators

Topological phases of matter are among the most intriguing research directions in Condensed Matter Physics. It is known that superconductivity induced on a topological insulator’s surface can lead to exotic Majorana modes, the main ingredient of many proposed quantum computation schemes. In this context, the iron-based high critical temperature superconductors are a promising platform to host such an exotic phenomenon in real condensed-matter compounds. The Coulomb interaction is commonly believed to be vital for the magnetic and superconducting properties of these systems. This work bridges these two perspectives and shows that the Coulomb interaction can also drive a canonical superconductor with orbital degrees of freedom into the topological state. Namely, we show that above a critical value of the Hubbard interaction the system simultaneously develops spiral spin order, a highly unusual triplet amplitude in superconductivity, and, remarkably, Majorana fermions at the edges of the system.

Disorder-induced topological phase transition in a driven Majorana chain

Here, we study a periodically driven one-dimensional Kitaev model in the presence of disorder. In the clean limit our model exhibits four topological phases corresponding to the existence or nonexistence of edge modes at zero and π quasienergy. When potential disorder is added, the system parameters get renormalized and the system may exhibit a topological phase transition. When starting from the Majorana π mode (MPM) phase, which hosts only edge Majoranas with quasienergy π, disorder induces a transition into a neighboring phase with both π and zero modes on the edges. We characterize the disordered system using (i) exact diagonalization, (ii) Arnoldi mapping onto an effective tight-binding chain, and (iii) topological entanglement entropy.

Nonperturbative constraints from symmetry and chirality on Majorana zero modes and defect quantum numbers in (2+1) dimensions

In (1+1)D topological phases, unpaired Majorana zero modes (MZMs) can arise only if the internal symmetry group G f of the ground state splits as G f = G b × $Z^f_2$, where $Z^f_2$ is generated by fermion parity, (–1) F . In contrast, (2+1)-dimensional [(2+1)D] topological superconductors (TSC) can host unpaired MZMs at defects even when G f is not of the form G b × $Z^f_2$. In this paper we study how G f together with the chiral central charge c – strongly constrain the existence of unpaired MZMs and the quantum numbers of symmetry defects. Our results utilize a recent algebraic characterization of (2+1)D invertible fermionic topological states, which provides a non-perturbative approach based on topological quantum field theory, beyond free fermions. We study physically relevant groups such as U(1) f $\rtimes$ H, SU (2) f × H, U(2) f $\rtimes$ H, generic Abelian groups, as well as more general compact Lie groups, antiunitary symmetries and crystalline symmetries. Further, we present an algebraic formula for the fermionic crystalline equivalence principle, which gives an equivalence between states with crystalline and internal symmetries. In light of our theory, we discuss several previously proposed realizations of unpaired MZMs in TSC materials such as Sr 2 RuO 4 , transition metal dichalcogenides and iron superconductors, in which crystalline symmetries are often important; in some cases we present additional predictions for the properties of these models.

Gate-defined wires in twisted bilayer graphene: From electrical detection of intervalley coherence to internally engineered Majorana modes

Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) realizes a highly tunable, strongly interacting system featuring superconductivity and various correlated insulating states. We establish gate-defined wires in TBG with proximity-induced spin-orbit coupling as (i) a tool for revealing the nature of correlated insulators and (ii) a platform for Majorana-based topological qubits. We show that the band structure of a gate-defined wire immersed in an intervalley coherent correlated insulator inherits electrically detectable fingerprints of symmetry breaking native to the latter. Surrounding the wire by a superconducting TBG region on one side and an intervalley coherent correlated insulator on the other further enables the formation of Majorana zero modes—possibly even at zero magnetic field depending on the precise symmetry-breaking order present. Our proposal not only introduces a highly gate-tunable topological qubit medium relying on internally generated proximity effects but can also shed light on the Cooper-pairing mechanism in TBG.

Hunting for Majoranas

Over the past decade, there have been considerable efforts to observe non-abelian quasiparticles in novel quantum materials and devices. These efforts are motivated by the goals of demonstrating quantum statistics of quasiparticles beyond those of fermions and bosons and of establishing the underlying science for the creation of topologically protected quantum bits. In this Review, we focus on efforts to create topological superconducting phases that host Majorana zero modes. We consider the lessons learned from existing experimental efforts, which are motivating both improvements to present platforms and the exploration of new approaches. Although the experimental detection of non-abelian quasiparticles remains challenging, the knowledge gained thus far and the opportunities ahead offer high potential for discovery and advances in this exciting area of quantum physics.

Analytic calculation of the vison gap in the Kitaev spin liquid

Although the ground-state energy of the Kitaev spin liquid can be calculated exactly, the associated vison gap energy has to date only been calculated numerically from finite size diagonalization. Here we show that the phase shift for scattering Majorana fermions off a single bond-flip can be calculated analytically, leading to a closed-form expression for the vison gap energy Δ = 0.2633 J . Generalizations of our approach can be applied to Kitaev spin liquids on more complex lattices such as the three dimensional hyper-octagonal lattice.

Topological Mott transition in a two band model of spinless fermions with on-site Coulomb repulsion

Highlights: • The effect of the on-site Coulomb repulsion and the spin–orbit Rashba coupling lead to the 2D topological semimetal. • The ground state phase diagram is calculated. • The topological semimetal phase is characterized by the zero energy Majorana states. In the framework of mean field approach, we study topological Mott transition in a two band model of spinless fermions on a square lattice at half filling. We consider the combined effect of the on-site Coulomb repulsion and the spin–orbit Rashba coupling. The ground state phase diagram is calculated as a function of the strength of the spin–orbit Rashba coupling and the Coulomb repulsion. The spin–orbit Rashba coupling leads to a distinct phase of matter, the topological semimetal. We study a new type of phase transition between the non-topological insulator and topological semimetal states. Topological phase state is characterized by the zero energy Majorana states, which there are in defined region of the wave vectors and are localized at the boundaries of the sample. The region of existence of the zero energy Majorana states tends to zero at the point of the Mott phase transition. The zero energy Majorana states are dispersionless (they can be considered as flat bands), the Chern number and Hall conductance are equal to zero (note in two dimensional model).

Majorana corner states on the dice lattice

Lattice geometry continues providing exotic topological phases in condensed matter physics. Exciting recent examples are the higher-order topological phases, manifesting via localized lower-dimensional boundary states. Moreover, flat electronic bands with a non-trivial topology arise in various lattices and can hold a finite superfluid density, bounded by the Chern number C . Here we consider attractive interaction in the dice lattice that hosts flat bands with C = ± 2 and show that the induced superconducting state exhibits a second-order topological phase with mixed singlet-triplet pairing. The second-order nature of the topological superconducting phase is revealed by the zero-energy Majorana bound states at the lattice corners. Hence, the topology of the normal state dictates the nature of the Majorana localization. These findings suggest that flat bands with a higher Chern number provide feasible platforms for inducing higher-order topological superconductivity.

The hybrid topological longitudinal transmon qubit

We introduce a new hybrid qubit consisting of a Majorana qubit interacting with a transmon longitudinally coupled to a resonator. To do so, we equip the longitudinal transmon qubit with topological quasiparticles, supported by an array of heterostructure nanowires, and derive charge- and phase-based interactions between the Majorana qubit and the resonator and transmon degrees of freedom. Inspecting the charge coupling, we demonstrate that the Majorana self-charging can be eliminated by a judicious choice of charge offset, thereby maintaining the Majorana degeneracy regardless of the quasiparticles spatial arrangement and parity configuration. We perform analytic and numerical calculations to derive the effective qubit-qubit interaction elements and discuss their potential utility for state readout and quantum error correction. Further, we find that select interactions depend strongly on the overall superconducting parity, which may provide a direct mechanism to characterize deleterious quasiparticle poisoning processes.

Majorana bound states in a d -wave superconductor planar Josephson junction

We study phase-controlled planar Josephson junctions comprising a two-dimensional electron gas with strong spin-orbit coupling and d-wave superconductors, which have an advantage of a high critical temperature. We show that a region between the two superconductors can be tuned into a topological state by the in-plane Zeeman field, and can host Majorana bound states. The phase diagram as a function of the Zeeman field, chemical potential, and the phase difference between superconductors exhibits the appearance of Majorana bound states for a wide range of parameters. We further investigate the behavior of the topological gap and its dependence on the type of d-wave pairing, i.e., d, d+is, or d+id', and note the difficulties that can arise due to the presence of gapless excitations in pure d-wave superconductors. On the other hand, the planar Josephson junctions based on superconductors with d+is and d+id' pairings can potentially lead to realizations of Majorana bound states. Furthermore, our proposal can be realized in cuprate superconductors, e.g., in a twisted bilayer, combined with the layered semiconductor Bi 2 O 2 Se.

Simulating exotic phases of matter with bond-directed interactions with arrays of Majorana-Cooper pair boxes

It is suggested that networks of Majorana-Cooper pair boxes connected by metallic nanowirescan simulate various exotic states of matter. In this simulations Majorana-Cooper boxes play therole of effective spins S=1/2 and the metallic connections generate the Kondo screening and theRuderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction. Depending on what prevails - whether it isthe Kondo effect or the RKKY exchange, one will have either an effective spin model or a Kondolattice. The list of exotic stets includes the famous hexagonal Kitaev model, a generalization of thismodel for a Kondo lattice and various spin models with three-spin interactions. A special emphasizeis made on the discussion of the Kondo lattice scenario.

Skyrmion control of Majorana states in planar Josephson junctions

Planar Josephson junctions provide a versatile platform, alternative to the nanowire-based geometry, for the generation of the Majorana bound states, due to the additional phase tunability of the topological superconductivity. The proximity induction of chiral magnetism and superconductivity in a two-dimensional electron gas showed remarkable promise to manipulate topological superconductivity. Here, we consider a Josephson junction involving a skyrmion crystal and show that the chiral magnetism of the skyrmions can create and control the Majorana bound states without the requirement of an intrinsic Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Interestingly, the Majorana bound states in our geometry are realized robustly at zero phase difference at the junction. The skyrmion radius, being externally tunable by a magnetic field or a magnetic anisotropy, brings a unique control feature for the Majorana bound states.
