Packaged SMIP Smart Connector for Ectron Computers

The project provides appropriate software modules, which allow to represent a physical oven as a virtual oven model. For that a virtual oven model is developed, which defines oven parameters like temperature, power consumption but also the door status and the humidity. To connect a real oven to the virtual model for monitoring and control multiple sensors are used to collect data. Using a MQTT based data connection the measured parameters are send to the CESMII environment for further processing and monitoring. Within this project the CESMII model for the general oven was developed and provided. Further the sensors were connected to the actual oven. The sensor data is collected via means of a MQTT based data transfer protocol to a gateway module. The gateway module then translates and transfers the collected data to the actual CESMII oven model.

Bridging Cloud and Edge Computing at NREL Using CONNECT: Cloud Optimized Networking for Next-Gen Edge Computing Technologies [Slides]

CONNECT is an innovative on-premise hardware and software solution that integrates edge and cloud computing infrastructure at NREL. Built on the AWS Greengrass middleware and leveraging the MQTT protocol, CONNECT enables real-time data streaming from IoT devices and gateways to both cloud and local services, empowering researchers to rapidly capture, analyze, and act upon edge-generated data while leveraging cloud capabilities. The platform addresses research infrastructure challenges by providing a pre-approved platform which is already configured with the correct networking and cybersecurity baselines thus eliminating procurement delays and enabling on-demand availability. CONNECT's hybrid architecture efficiently manages burstable workloads, allowing research teams to dynamically scale computational capacity, handle peak data loads, and reduce operational bottlenecks. Advanced capabilities include built-in GPU support for executing machine learning models which enables low-latency inference at the edge from models trained in the cloud. This architecture supports real-time analytics and filtering, providing a mechanism to allow only transmitting and processing high-value data. Cloud-based configuration management permits engineers to manage on-premise systems remotely, optimizing operational efficiency. By bridging edge and cloud computing, CONNECT provides NREL researchers with a flexible, scalable platform that accelerates scientific discovery while maintaining robust security and performance standards.

A Communication Testbed for Testing Power Electronic Agent Systems

Power electronic systems (PES) incorporate complex intra-system communication, which are of vital importance for the successful operation of these systems. This paper proposes and outlines a communication testbed that will help in the development and testing of the communications between the components of PES. It allows for the comparison and evaluation of different communication methods, such as MQTT, Modbus, or User Datagram Protocol (UDP), and for the characterization of how these communication protocols perform.

Icypaw

The Intermode Communication Protocol Wrapper, or Icypaw, structures and facilitates communication between endpoints in a network. It is used to connect various independent software and hardware components into one loosely organized system controllable from one or more locations. The code uses the MQTT protocol to communicate and enhances it with a useful framework. MasQiTT

SAND2025-03471O MasQiTT software is a proof-of-concept code that implements the Secure MQTT protocol. It demonstrates a publish/subscribe model of message passing within a network where the publishers can encrypt messages according to a topic and the subscribers can decrypt those messages. The example code shows an example of deployment of an end-to-end system that includes certificate authority and key management in addition to basic implementation of the protocol. EVSE DERMS Controls [SWR-26-010]

An MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport) and OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) based remote smart charging controller framework for AC Electric Vehicle Supply Equipments (EVSEs). The code in this repo allows for the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) controls to interface with the real Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) and EVSEs in NLR's ESIF Optimization and Control Laboratory (OCL). Different charge management algorithms can be tested to determine which power allocation method is most effective with the overall goal of demonstrating clear and well documented test results as well as providing functional control algorithms which could be utilized to provide effective smart charge management (SCM) at EV charging stations. Different power allocation methods are programmed in lab_demo_controller.py and include allocation based on first come first served, equal sharing, state of charge (SOC), priority factors, and behind the meter control methods.

Securing Inverter Communication: Proactive Intrusion Detection and Mitigation System to Tap, Analyze, and Act

The electric grid has undergone rapid, revolutionary changes in recent years; from the addition of advanced smart technologies to the growing penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) to increased interconnectivity and communications. However, these added communications, access interfaces, and third-party software to enable autonomous control schemes and interconnectivity also expand the attack surface of the grid. To address the gap of DER cybersecurity and secure the grid-edge to motivate a holistic, defense-in-depth approach, a proactive intrusion detection and mitigation system (PIDMS) device was developed to secure PV smart inverter communications. The PIDMS was developed as a distributed, flexible bump-in-the-wire (BITW) solution for protecting PV smart inverter communications. Both cyber (network traffic) and physical (power system measurements) are processed using network intrusion monitoring tools and custom machinelearning algorithms for deep packet analysis and cyber-physical event correlation. The PIDMS not only detects abnormal events but also deploys mitigations to limit or eliminate system impact; the PIDMS communicates with peer PIDMSs at different locations using the MQTT protocol for increased situational awareness and alerting. The details of the PIDMS methodology and prototype development are detailed in this report as well as the evaluation results within a cyber-physical emulation environment and subsequent industry feedback.
