The 2010 ILSO-ISRU Field Test at Mauna Kea, Hawaii: Results from the Miniaturised Mossbauer Spectrometers Mimos II and Mimos IIA

For the advanced Moessbauer instrument MIMOS IIA, the new detector technologies and electronic components increase sensitivity and performance significantly. In combination with the high energy resolution of the SDD it is possible to perform X-ray fluorescence analysis simultaneously to Moessbauer spectroscopy. In addition to the Fe-mineralogy, information on the sample's elemental composition will be gathered. The ISRU 2010 field campaign demonstrated that in-situ Moessbauer spectroscopy is an effective tool for both science and feedstock exploration and process monitoring. Engineering tests showed that a compact nickel metal hydride battery provided sufficient power for over 12 hr of continuous operation for the MIMOS instruments.

The ISRU Field Tests 2010 and 2012 at Mauna Kea, Hawaii: Results from the Miniaturised Mossbauer Spectrometers Mimos II and Mimos IIA

The 2010 and 2012 In-Situ Resource Utilization Analogue Test (ISRU) [1] on the Mauna Kea volcano in Hawai'i was coordinated by the Northern Centre for Advanced Technology (NORCAT) in collaboration with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), the German Aerospace Center (DLR), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), through the PISCES program. Several instruments were tested as reference candidates for future analogue testing at the new field test site at the Mauna Kea volcano in Hawai'i. The fine-grained, volcanic nature of the material is a suitable lunar and martian analogue, and can be used to test excavation, site preparation, and resource utilization techniques. The 2010 location Pu'u Hiwahine, a cinder cone located below the summit of Mauna Kea (19deg45'39.29" N, 155deg28'14.56" W) at an elevation of ~2800 m, provides a large number of slopes, rock avalanches, etc. to perform mobility tests, site preparation or resource prospecting. Besides hardware testing of technologies and systems related to resource identification, also in situ science measurements played a significant role in integration of ISRU and science instruments. For the advanced Mössbauer instrument MIMOS IIA, the new detector technologies and electronic components increase sensitivity and performance significantly. In combination with the high energy resolution of the SDD it is possible to perform Xray fluorescence analysis simultaneously to Mössbauer spectroscopy. Single Carrier Modulation Resource Allocation for Massive MIMO with Virtual Antennas

Today’s Massive MIMO cellular operation is dominated by orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. One of the advantages of OFDM is the flexibility to carve up the available spectrum into resource blocks (RBs) that can operate adjacent to one another. Massive MIMO adds spatial multiplexing layers on top of the RBs, enabling the simultaneous operation of dozens of UEs. Cyclic prefixed single carrier modulation (CP-SCM) is an alternative to OFDM that also benefits from massive MIMO and is useful as an OFDM alternative in specific scenarios. However, until recently, no resource allocation method has been proposed for CP-SCM. In this paper, we present a CP-SCM resource allocation scheme using virtual antennas in a massive MIMO time domain duplexed scenario. By creating several virtual antennas for each physical antenna, the benefits of massive MIMO are achieved with a smaller physical antenna count. Resources are quantized into data streams, and each user can be assigned a variable number of simultaneous streams. This paper presents a detailed development and analysis of multi-stream processing (MSP) for both uplink detection and downlink precoding. We also introduce heterogeneous MSP, where CP-SCM and OFDM signals can be processed in the same MSP framework.

Automated shaker placement and regularized input estimation for MIMO testing.

Multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) testing is used in component qualification to reproduce operational responses in the laboratory. It is often preferred to single-input and base-shake testing because of the potential for equivalent or better tests using smaller actuators and shorter test suites. Given a target response, two key steps in MIMO test design are selecting actuator locations and solving for input loads. Actuator locations are often manually selected using expert judgment. If an automatic method is used, locations are usually determined by simulating the vibration control problem and minimizing a combination of the input energy and control residuals. To select a configuration, the relative importance of input energy and residuals must be specified. Specifying relative weights is, in general, a manual and subjective process. This paper develops an objective function that compares actuator configurations based on control accuracy and required input energy without any manual parameter tuning. The objective function uses an optimally selected tradeoff parameter for each candidate configuration. To choose actuator locations using the new objective function, a pivoting algorithm for integer programming problems is developed. Starting with an initial configuration (such as the one generated by a greedy algorithm), the pivoting algorithm guarantees an objective function decrease in each iteration until convergence is reached. In a simulation featuring a structure excited by a diffuse acoustic field, electrodynamic shaker locations and regularized inputs are solved for without any analyst-specified parameters. Simulations are performed in MIMO configurations where the number of target responses is less than, equal to, and greater than the number of actuators.

The Miniaturized Moessbauer Spectrometers MIMOS II on MER: Four Years of Operation - A Summary

The two Miniaturized Moessbauer Spectrometers (MIMOS II) on board the two Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity have now been collecting important scientific data for more than four years. The spectrometers provide information about Fe-bearing mineral phases and determine Fe oxidation states. The total amount of targets analized exceeds 600, the total integration time exceeds 260 days for both rovers. Since landing, more than five half-lives of the Co-57 MB sources have past (intensity at the time of landing approx. 150 mCi). Current integration times are about 50 hours in order to achieve reasonable statistics as opposed to 8 hours at the beginning of the mission. In total, 13 different mineral phases were detected: Olivine, pyroxene, hematite, magnetite and nanophase ferric oxide were detected at both landing sites. At Gusev, ilmenite, goethite, a ferric sulfate phase and a yet unassigned phase (in the rock Fuzzy Smith) were detected. At Meridiani, jarosite, metallic iron in meteoritic samples (kamacite), troilite, and an unassigned ferric phase were detected. Jarosite and goethite are of special interest, as these minerals are indicators for water activity. In this abstract, an overview of Moessbauer results will be given, with a focus on data obtained since the last martian winter. The MER mission has proven that Moessbauer spectroscopy is a valuable tool for the in situ exploration of extraterrestrial bodies and for the study of Febearing samples. The experience gained through the MER mission makes MIMOS II a obvious choice for future missions to Mars and other targets. Currently, MIMOS II is on the scientific payload of two approved future missions: Phobos Grunt (Russian Space Agency; 2009) and ExoMars (European Space Agency; 2013).

Covariance Shaping Over Riemannian Manifolds for Massive MIMO Communication

Acquiring accurate instantaneous channel state information (CSI) is a challenging aspect of massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communication. Utilizing statistical information, such as channel covariance matrix, to design statistical beamforming vectors is robust when compared to instantaneous CSI. In this paper, we propose a novel MIMO covariance shaping scheme over Riemannian manifolds. It serves as an effective statistical beamforming solution to a number of close proximity user equipment (UE) that are undergoing substantial channel correlation. Proposed algorithm exploits the Hermitian positive definite nature of covariance matrices lying over Riemannian manifold. We introduce Wasserstein distance function as a Riemannian metric to measure distances between channel covariance matrices. Furthermore, K-means clustering technique is utilized to effectively identify the optimal shape of effective optimal covariance matrices. Our findings suggest that maximizing the geodesic distance between covariance matrices ultimately leads to a corresponding increase in the network throughput, as determined by the beamforming vector used to shape the covariance matrices. Simulation results validate that the proposed solution converges faster than Euclidean-based state-of-the-art, while maintaining the same computational complexity. Finally, the sum rate performance asymptotically achieves full capacity for two-UE case and more than 96% of the upper bound exhaustive search benchmark for multi-UE scenario.

Resource Allocation for Single Carrier Massive MIMO Systems

Resource allocation in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems is performed through allocating blocks of subcarriers to each user. Even though OFDM is the primary waveform for 5G NR systems, research reports have noted that single carrier modulation (SCM) offers several advantages over OFDM in massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems, making it a preferred candidate for some future applications such as massive machine type communications (mMTC). This paper presents a method for SCM resource allocation and the relevant information recovery algorithms at the receiver. Our emphasis is on cyclic prefixed SCM, where highly flexible and efficient frequency domain detection algorithms enable the operation of many simultaneous users in a massive MIMO uplink scenario. The proposed resource allocation method allows the number of users to exceed the number of antennas at the base station (BS). Each single carrier transmission is partitioned into L interleaved streams, and each user is allocated a number of such streams. One major benefit of SCM is that each data symbol is spread over the entire bandwidth. As such, the receiver performance is dictated by the average channel gain across the transmission band rather than the channel gain at a given frequency bin or a small group of frequencies. In the proposed setup, each stream may be thought of as a resource block in SCM, analogous to resource blocks in OFDM. Hence, in the context of this paper, the terms resource blocks and streams may be used interchangeably.

Precoder Design for Physical-Layer Security and Authentication in Massive MIMO UAV Communications

Supporting reliable and seamless wireless connectivity for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has recently become a critical requirement to enable various different use cases of UAVs. Due to their widespread deployment footprint, cellular networks can support beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) communications for UAVs. In this paper, we consider cellular connected UAVs (C-UAVs) that are served by massive multiple input-multiple-output (MIMO) links to extend coverage range, while also improving physical layer security and authentication. Here, we consider Rician channel and propose a novel linear precoder design for transmitting data and artificial noise (AN). We derive the closed-form expression of the ergodic secrecy rate of CUAVs for both conventional and proposed precoder designs. In addition, we obtain the optimal power splitting factor that divides the power between data and AN by asymptotic analysis. Then, we apply the proposed precoder design in the fingerprint embedding authentication framework, where the goal is to minimize the probability of detection of the authentication tag at an eavesdropper. In simulation results, we show the superiority of the proposed precoder in both secrecy rate and the authentication probability considering moderate and large number of antenna massive MIMO scenarios.

Quantification and prediction of error in MIMO tests

Dynamic testing of systems is most realistic of real-world conditions when multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) techniques are used. To replicate measured environmental conditions, a series of desired outputs (responses) on the system must be realized by inverting the frequency response functions (FRF) matrix for input estimation. System identification is dependent on the number of inputs and outputs, which affect the type of solutions. In input estimation, the auto spectra of the determined inputs are affected by both the auto spectra and cross spectra of the desired outputs. This research evaluates errors and investigates two sources in an experimental setting. The first significant error source is test-to-test variability in FRFs from system identification tests, quantified by magnitude variability from long-duration tests. The second significant error source is the realization of time histories from frequency domain inputs. The spectral content of the realized random process deviates from the desired content and is also quantified. The structure is a linear three-story frame fixed at the base; two inputs are provided uniaxially with the use of suspended electrodynamic shakers. The proposed model for error sources was found to be effective in predicting errors in a SISO (single-input single-output) and a square (2-input 2-output) MIMO test.

An Assessment of Receiver Algorithms for Distributed Massive MIMO Systems: Investigating Design Solutions and Performance

This study investigates receiver design solutions for distributed Massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (D-m MIMO) systems, taking into account parameters such as number of access points as well as concerns related to channel estimates that use single-carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE). A significant contribution of this research is the integration of Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes to simplify coding complexity and enhance communication efficiency. The research examines different receiver designs, such as spatial antenna correlation and sophisticated channel estimation methods. The authors propose integrating LDPC codes into the receiver architecture to simplify computations and enhance error correction and decoding. Moreover, the paper examines performance evaluation measures and approaches, highlighting the trade-offs among complexity, spectral efficiency, and error performance. The comparative analysis indicates the benefits, in terms of performance, of incorporating LDPC codes and improving system throughput and dependability. We examine four distinct receiver algorithms: zero-forcing (ZF), minimum mean square error (MMSE), maximum ratio combining (MRC), and equal gain combining (EGC). The study shows that MRC and EGC receivers work well in D-m MIMO because they make the receiver system less computationally demanding.

Model reduction of nonsquare linear MIMO systems using multipoint matrix continued-fraction expansions

This paper deals with the multipoint Cauer matrix continued-fraction expansion (MCFE) for model reduction of linear multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems with various numbers of inputs and outputs. A salient feature of the proposed MCFE approach to model reduction of MIMO systems with square transfer matrices is its equivalence to the matrix Pade approximation approach. The Cauer second form of the ordinary MCFE for a square transfer function matrix is generalized in this paper to a multipoint and nonsquare-matrix version. An interesting connection of the multipoint Cauer MCFE method to the multipoint matrix Pade approximation method is established. Also, algorithms for obtaining the reduced-degree matrix-fraction descriptions and reduced-dimensional state-space models from a transfer function matrix via the multipoint Cauer MCFE algorithm are presented. Practical advantages of using the multipoint Cauer MCFE are discussed and a numerical example is provided to illustrate the algorithms.

Investigation of Multi-Input, Multi-Output (MIMO) Random Control Applied to Direct Field Acoustic Testing

Direct Field Acoustic Testing (DFAT) offers potential cost and time savings over reverberant chamber acoustic testing of spacecraft. The NASA Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) Program recently directed a series of acoustic tests on Orion structural test articles comparing DFAT and reverberant testing of the same test article with a view to qualifying DFAT for manned space flight vehicles. The verification process compared four parameters noise level compliance with the one third octave test specification, spatial uniformity of the acoustic field, spatial correlation of the acoustic field and vibration response of vehicle structure, including representative solar array panels. While the results of the verification were encouraging, MPCV Loads and Dynamics engaged Quartus Engineering to investigate whether alternative MIMO random control strategies might improve the spatial uniformity and/or the spatial correlation of the DFAT acoustic field. This paper presents the results of acoustic field simulations of the DFAT test and provides a better understanding of how MIMO random control systems originally developed for vibration and structural durability testing can be expected to perform in DFAT testing.

Efficient Precoding for Single Carrier Modulation in Multi-User Massive MIMO Networks

Abstract—Frequency domain (FD) multi-user detection (MUD) and precoding has been shown to be an effective means of approaching the theoretical per-user capacity for single carrier modulation (SCM) schemes in massive MIMO scenarios with highly dispersive channels. When a cyclic prefix is added to the SCM waveform, the circulant structures of the resulting convolutional channel matrix allows for relatively simple expressions for the FD detection and precoding. In this paper, we further refine the computationally efficient minimum mean squared error (MMSE) FD-MUD technique in a time-division duplexing (TDD) massive MIMO setup by pre-computing the scale factor needed to produce an unbiased estimate. The resulting scale factor and the matrix inverse that was calculated for the uplink is then reused for the downlink to form a computationally efficient precoding scheme with superior performance compared to zero-forcing (ZF) precoding. Performance analysis is provided and confirmed through simulation results.

Achievable Rate and Energy Efficiency Analysis of Multiuser Relay-Aided Massive MIMO Downlink

In this article, the achievable sum rate and the energy efficiency (EE) are investigated for a multiuser relay-aided massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) downlink. Low-resolution digital-to-analog converters (DACs) are equipped at both the base station (BS) and the relay station (RS), and the amplify-and-forward protocol is adopted at the RS. Under the Rician fading channel, closed-form approximate expressions for the achievable sum rate are derived with perfect and imperfect channel state information. Furthermore, a more general power law is extracted to save transmit power without reducing the achievable sum rate, and a local optimal power allocation scheme is proposed to improve the channel capacity of active users. Then, the tradeoff between the achievable sum rate and the EE is discussed. The numerical results show that, due to the quantization noise, the transmit power has a limited increase in the achievable rate. In addition, it is more valuable to improve the DAC quantization bit at the RS when the number of BS antennas is larger than that of RS antennas. In addition, under strong line-of-sight channels or high pilot transmit power conditions, the channel estimation accuracy is higher, and the best tradeoff between the achievable sum rate and the EE can be obtained when the DAC quantization bit is 4.

A Novel Miniaturized MIMO Microstrip Patch Antenna Array with EBG- and Slot-Loading

A compact four-element multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna array based on the miniaturized mi-crostrip patch is presented. The reduction in array form factor is realized by partially populating the ground plane with elec-tromagnetic band gap (EBG) cells constructed from cross slots, in combination with reactively loading each patch with a slot. The resultant 2 × 2 array system demonstrates excellent inter-element isolation and can be easily fabricated using traditional milling and printing techniques, as it exploits a 2D layout that can be conveniently implemented on two sides of a single-layer substrate, without the need for any via structures. The operation of the array near the 2.5 GHz band is verified with full-wave simulations. The size of the new design is approximately 42% of that employing conventional patch elements.
