Introduction to the Special Issue on Microwave Circuits on Silicon Substrates

This article discusses the development of microwave circuits on silicon substrate. Silicon, even though inexpensive, did not provide the performance required for microwave circuits. Instead the development of microwave circuits used GaAs and InP substrates. With the development of commercial usages for microwave circuits, the costs of microwave circuits became an issue. The importance of cost, and the development of Si-device capabilities and fabrication techniques, such as molecular beam epitaxy, and ultra-high chemical vapor deposition. provided the circumstances where the development of microwave circuits on silicon is now possible.

High-Temperature-Superconductor Films In Microwave Circuits

Report discusses recent developments in continuing research on fabrication and characterization of thin films of high-temperature superconducting material and incorporation of such films into microwave circuits. Research motivated by prospect of exploiting superconductivity to reduce electrical losses and thereby enhancing performance of such critical microwave components as ring resonators, filters, transmission lines, phase shifters, and feed lines in phased-array antennas.

High temperature superconducting thin film microwave circuits: Fabrication, characterization, and applications

Epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7 films were grown on several microwave substrates. Surface resistance and penetration depth measurements were performed to determine the quality of these films. Here the properties of these films on key microwave substrates are described. The fabrication and characterization of a microwave ring resonator circuit to determine transmission line losses are presented. Lower losses than those observed in gold resonator circuits were observed at temperatures lower than critical transition temperature. Based on these results, potential applications of microwave superconducting circuits such as filters, resonators, oscillators, phase shifters, and antenna elements in space communication systems are identified.

Finite Ground Coplanar (FGC) Waveguide: A Better Transmission Line for Microwave Circuits

A new version of coplanar waveguide (CPW) with electrically narrow ground strips 14 has been developed for microwave integrated circuits. This transmission line, referred to by Finite Ground Coplanar (FGC) waveguide, has several advantages over conventional coplanar waveguide. Since the ground strips are narrow, parasitic resonances that develop when the CPW is placed on a carrier or in a package are eliminated. In addition, the narrow ground strips permit the integration of lumped and distributed circuit elements in the ground strips as well as in the center strip to reduce the circuit size and improve its performance. Finally, the coupling between adjacent FGC transmission lines is lower than the coupling between CPW lines for the same spacing between the lines. All of these attributes of FGC are presented in this paper.

Robust Hybrid Finite Element Methods for Antennas and Microwave Circuits

One of the primary goals in this dissertation is concerned with the development of robust hybrid finite element-boundary integral (FE-BI) techniques for modeling and design of conformal antennas of arbitrary shape. Both the finite element and integral equation methods will be first overviewed in this chapter with an emphasis on recently developed hybrid FE-BI methodologies for antennas, microwave and millimeter wave applications. The structure of the dissertation is then outlined. We conclude the chapter with discussions of certain fundamental concepts and methods in electromagnetics, which are important to this study.

A 29.3-GHz cavity-enclosed aperture-coupled circular-patch antenna for microwave circuit integration

A circular patch antenna fed by an aperture-coupled microstrip line has been demonstrated at 29.3 GHz. The patch was enclosed by a cavity to reduce surface-wave interactions in an array environment and to improve heat dissipation when using active devices. The antenna exhibited a 2:1 input VSWR (voltage standing wave ratio) over a bandwidth of 12 percent from 27.52 to 30.95 GHz. The antenna should have applications in conformal phased arrays at millimeter-wave frequencies.
