Advances in the Large Area Picosecond Photo-Detector (LAPPD TM ): 8" × 8" MCP-PMT with Capacitively Coupled Readout

Abstract We present advances made in the Large Area Picosecond Photodetector (LAPPD), an 8" × 8" microchannel plate photomultiplier tube (MCP-PMT), since pilot production was initiated at Incom, Inc. in 2018. The Gen-I LAPPD utilizes a stripline anode for direct charge readout. The novel Gen-II LAPPD employs an internal resistive thin-film which capacitively couples to a customizable external signal readout board, streamlining production and increasing customer flexibility. The Gen-II LAPPD, with an active area of 373 cm 2 , is capable of high single photoelectron (PE) gain of ∼10 7 , low dark rates (∼1 kHz/cm 2 ), single PE (SPE) timing resolution of ∼65 ps, and 𝒪(mm) position resolution. Coupled with a UV-grade fused silica window, the LAPPD features a high quantum efficiency (QE) bialkali photocathode of >30% at 365 nm with spectral response down to ∼165 nm. The LAPPD is an excellent candidate for electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) timing layers, photon-based neutrino detectors, high energy collider experiments, medical imaging systems, and nuclear non-proliferation applications.

Characterization of the miniPlanacon XPM85112-S-R2D2 MCP-PMT with custom modified backend electronics

We report the results of the measurements of three pieces of the new Photonis miniPLANACON microchannel-plate photomultipliers (MCP-PMTs) intended for use in the demanding environment of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) beamline as a part of the AFP Time-of-Flight detector. These photomultipliers were modified in cooperation with the manufacturer by using a custom backend and were subjected to numerous tests, with the focus on the rate capability and crosstalk behaviour. We determined that the two of them with a lower MCP resistance are able to operate without significant saturation at an anode current density of 1 μA/cm 2 . These two are, therefore, suitable for the intended use and are currently installed as part of the AFP detector packages.

Performance comparison of high speed microchannel plate photomultiplier tubes

The transit time spread characteristics of high speed microchannel photomultipliers has improved since the upgrade of the NASA CDSLR network to MCP-PMT's in the mid-1980's. The improvement comes from the incorporation of 6 micron (pore size) microchannels and offers significant improvement to the satellite ranging precision. To examine the impact on ranging precision, two microchannel plate photomultiplier tubes (MCP-PMT) were evaluated for output pulse characteristics and temporal jitter. These were a Hamamatsu R 2566 U-7 MCP-PMT (6 micron) and an ITT 4129f MCP-PMT (12 micron).

Low-dose high-resolution $\mathrm{TOF}$-$\mathrm{PET}$ using ionization-activated multi-state low-$\mathrm{Z}$ detector media

We propose PET scanners using low atomic number media that undergo a persistent local change of state along the paths of the Compton recoil electrons. Measurement of the individual scattering locations and angles, deposited energies, and recoil electron directions allows using the kinematical constraints of the 2-body Compton scattering process to perform a statistical time-ordering of the scatterings, with a high probability of precisely identifying where the gamma first interacted in the detector. In these cases the Line-of-Response is measured with high resolution, determined by the underlying physics processes and not the detector segmentation. There are multiple such media that act through different mechanisms. As an example in which the change of state is quantum-mechanical through a change in molecular configuration, rather than thermodynamic, as in a bubble chamber, we present simulations of a two-state photoswitchable organic dye, a ‘Switchillator’, that is activated to a fluorescent-capable state by the ionization of the recoil electrons. The activated state is persistent, and can be optically excited multiple times to image individual activated molecules. Energy resolution is provided by counting the activated molecules. Location along the LOR is implemented by large-area time-of-flight MCP-PMT photodetectors with single photon time resolution in the tens of ps and sub-mm spatial resolution. Simulations indicate a large reduction of dose.

NGSLR's Measurement of the Retro-Reflector Array Response of Various LEO to GNSS Satellites

"NASA's Next Generation Satellite Laser Ranging System (NGSLR) has successfully demonstrated daylight and nighttime tracking this year to s atellites from LEO to GNSS orbits, using a 7-8 arcsecond beam divergence, a 43% QE Hamamatsu MCP-PMT with single photon detection, a narrow field of view (11 arcseconds), and a 1 mJ per pulse 2kHz repetition rate laser. We have compared the actual return rates we are getting against the theoretical link calculations, using the known system confi guration parameters, an estimate of the sky transmission using locall y measured visibility, and signal processing to extract the signal from the background noise. We can achieve good agreement between theory and measurement in most passes by using an estimated pOinting error. We will s~.()w the results of this comparison along with our conclusio ns."

HRPPD photosensors for RICH detectors with a high resolution timing capability

Recently, a new version of DC-coupled High Rate Picosecond Photodetectors (DC-HRPPDs) substantially re-designed for use at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) has been developed. A first batch of seven “EIC HRPPDs” was manufactured in early 2024. These HRPPDs are DC-coupled photosensors based on Micro-Channel Plates (MCPs) that have an active area of 104 mm by 104 mm, 32 × 32 direct readout pixel array at a pitch of 3.25 mm, peak quantum efficiency in excess of 30%, exceptionally low dark count rates and timing resolution of 15–20 ps for a single photon detection. As such, these photosensors are very well suited for Ring Imaging CHerenkov (RICH) detectors that can additionally provide high resolution timing capability, especially in a configuration where a detected charged particle passes through the sensor window, which produces a localized flash containing a few dozens of Cherenkov photons in it.

Evaluation of the absolute single-photon detection efficiency of HRPPD

Pixelated High Rate Picosecond Photon Detectors (HRPPDs) by Incom Inc. are promising photosensors for use in Ring Imaging CHerenkov (RICH) detectors, where a high gain, sub-mm position resolution and sub-100ps timing resolution are required in a single photon mode. Quantum Efficiency (QE) has been measured for the first batch of EIC HRPPDs both by Incom and EIC research groups at Jefferson Lab and Brookhaven Lab, with peak values at ∼365 nm typically exceeding 30%. Furthermore, in this study, we present a first direct measurement of Photon Detection Efficiency being equal to (17.1 ± 0.1 [stat] ± 0.3 [sys])% at 398.6 nm, for a pixel near the center of HRPPD, in a photoelectron pulse counting mode using a picosecond diode laser. HRPPD QE at the same spot and at the same wavelength was evaluated to be (24.4 ± 0.1 [stat] ± 0.3 [sys])%, leading to a Collection Efficiency estimate of (70.3 ± 1.6)%, which is consistent with the expectations.
