MCNP6.3: A Year in Review [Slides]

This presentation discusses the past year and the many accomplishments of the MCNP6.3 team. It states that the MCNP6.3 release is imminent and that the approved, final documents have been making their way to the website. The code executables and source are already packaged up for distribution and the new installer is being finalized and tested now, for all platforms. The package will be sent to RSICC before the end of October 2022. Additionally, the presentation discusses some things to think about as MCNP6.3 is requested and/or used. For example, many of the recent efforts have been focused on making development, updates, and distribution of the code and documents more robust and streamlined. They will be revising/updating documents more frequently than ever before and they will be exploring avenues to distribute official patches to MCNP6.3. As they explain, this allows them to be more responsive to bugs and issues that are identified. In conclusion, the application of a patch to MCNP6.3 will require having the source code.

Verification and Validation of the New MCNP6.3 Criticality Features

The MCNP6® code, version 6.3, has been extensively verified and validated for many applications. The use of the same default capabilities existing in the MCNP6.2 code are also used in the verification and validation (V&V) of the MCNP6.3 code. In this paper, selected new features, code enhancements, and bug fixes in the MCNP6.3 code that impact criticality safety applications are described and investigated. More specifically, the changes within the MCNP6.3 code that are studied in this work include both the new fission matrix and the Doppler broadening resonance correction (DBRC) features. For nuclear criticality safety applications, the V&V benchmark problems within the criticality, extended criticality, and Rossi-α suites are used to study the upgrades within the MCNP6.3 code. Some additional investigations into benchmarks at elevated temperatures are used to showcase the impacts of the temperature-specific capabilities.

Verification and Validation of the New MCNP6.3 Criticality Features [Slides]

This presentation touches on a separate MCNP6.3 V&V document reports on all the default calculations for all test suites. Here, we look at new optional features of the MCNP6.3 code with Fission-matrix-based options, Convergence and population testing, and Automated acceleration of the fission source additionally Doppler Broadening Resonance Correction. Also touched on are validation benchmarks: criticality, crit_expanded, and Rossi-α. All the new MCNP6.3 options give statistically equivalent results and either provide a reduction or no change in computational cost. We consider giving these new features a try and using them for all criticality calculations.

Verification and Performance Impact of the New Parallel MCNP6.3 Particle Track Output Capability for Subcritical Multiplication Simulations [Slides]

A separate MCNP6.3 V&V document reports on all the default calculations for all test suites. This report does not include the subcritical multiplication benchmark suite. After some additional clean-up and finalizing the post-processing and documentation steps, the subcritical multiplication benchmark suite will be released in the next version of our vnvstats repository. We tested the new HDF5 PTRAC feature in MCNP6.3 and found encouraging outcomes. Identical results coming out of the simulation with respect to the legacy PTRAC results. The overall runtime for all simulations is reduced by ~20% with the new HDF5 PTRAC capability. We consider giving the new HDF5 PTRAC features a try and using it for all subcritical multiplication and any other relevant (PTRAC) calculations.

Verification and Performance Impact of the New Parallel MCNP6.3 Particle Track Output Capability for Subcritical Multiplication Simulations

The MCNP6® code, version 6.3, has several new features that are intended to ultimately replace legacy features that are now marked for deprecation. One of these features is the new particle track output (PTRAC) format and capability, where the legacy PTRAC capability still exists alongside the modern PTRAC capability in MCNP6.3. While the MCNP6.3 code has been extensively verified and validated for many applications, the PTRAC feature is not exercised in any of the typical verification and validation (V&V) applications studied during the course of a typical MCNP code release. The primary goal of this paper is to verify that the legacy and modern PTRAC feature produces equivalent results for subcritical multiplication benchmarks previously studied. In the process of verifying that the simulated benchmark results are equivalent, the computational performance is compared between the legacy and modern PTRAC uses. In addition to verification of the update, which is important to the community as a whole, this effort also supports advances in the simulation of recent subcritical neutron noise measurements that require higher computational effort per second of real-time measurement than that of systems typically measured.

Thermal Neutron Scattering Improvements and Fixes for MCNP6.3 [Slides]

Major error (10,000+ pcm) discovered when using uranium-dioxide or uranium-nitride included in ENDF80SaB2 release. Improvements are being made towards preparing the code for ENDF/B-VIII.1 (ACE) format updates. A minor error (0-10’s pcm) was discovered while working on new capability development for Lab Directed Research & Development (LDRD) project. Previously, only a single coherent or incoherent elastic channel (along with an inelastic channel) was allowed in a thermal neutron scattering evaluation and subsequent processed ACE file. Based on what is planned in ENDF/B-VIII.1 release, there will be (a) new thermal scattering evaluation(s) which uses this mixed-mode coherent and incoherent elastic scattering blocks. MCNP6.3 has been modified to be able to handle such data in the future. Some reorganization has been made in the cross section calculation (acetot, sabcol, colidn) in the presence of TSL data.

A Python Script to Read MCNP6.3 Surface-Source Files

This report provides a Python script to read an MCNP ® surface source file created with the SSW card with SYM = 0 (i.e., the default symmetry treatment). For background: the general format of an MCNP surface-source file is described in; however, that document did not provide coding and/or a tool to interrogate such files. The current format will not be given in this document other than through the record-read statements necessary for the script to function. The reader capability in this report is augmented with the ability to directly write a couple demonstrative outputs: 1. A comma-separated value (CSV) file containing particle phase-space state information and 2. A Matplotlib histogram of the energy distribution of the particles. This report also describes accompanying verification work that shows the script performing as required with MCNP6.2, MCNP6.3, and (expected) MCNP6.4 surface-source files. However, users of the enclosed script must still verify that the script is behaving correctly for their own work.

Improved Verification and Validation Testing and Tools including Nuclear Criticality Safety Applications with the MCNP6.3® Code [Abstract]

A new Python-based framework has been developed to enable a more consistent layout with automatable setup, execution, and documentation of all verification and validation (V&V) test suites previously established for use with the MCNP code. In this paper, the new general framework for the V&V test suites is discussed, including information on all of the current capabilities and plans for future capabilities. For nuclear criticality safety applications, the existing V&V benchmark problems within the criticality, extended criticality, and analytic k-effective test suites have been ported into this new framework. In addition, the status and updates to the Rossi-alpha and subcritical multiplicationtest suites will be discussed. Some V&V results exercising new MCNP6.3 capabilities will be demonstrated.

Validation of electron backscattering in the MCNP6.3 code

A new electron backscattering validation suite has been developed for the MCNP® code. The calculations in this suite cover both condensed history and single-event transport methods, seven different elemental materials ranging from beryllium to uranium, and incident electron energies from 200 eV to 14.1 MeV. In general, the accuracy of the MCNP code for electron backscattering calculations is energy-dependent. For incident electron energies below 2 keV, the condensed history method is not applied while the single-event method shows poor agreement with experimental measurements due to poor accuracy of the underlying atomic data. For incident energies between 2 keV and 256 keV, the single-event method typically shows better agreement with experiments, while for incident energies above 256 keV the condensed history method gives better accuracy. Additionally, agreement with experimental data is generally worse for low- Z materials such as beryllium and carbon, which may reflect deficiencies in the data or physics underlying electron transport through light elements in the MCNP code. The new electron backscattering validation suite, along with the previously introduced electron stopping power and Lockwood energy deposition validation suites, provide MCNP users with a quantified understanding of the uncertainties in electron transport calculations. Future improvements to electron transport in the MCNP code are necessary for low energies (≤ 2 keV) and for low- Z materials.

Fission Matrix Processing Using the MCNP6.3 HDF5 Restart File

This paper describes an approach to interrogating the fission matrix available in the HDF5-formatted restart file (also known as the “runtape” file), which is produced by the upcoming public release of the MCNP R code, version 6.3. The fission matrix, its eigenvalues, and its eigenvectors, are important tools for characterizing fissile systems such as research and power reactors and for accelerating the convergence of the Monte Carlo fission-source site distribution.
