Lattice Dynamics and Optoelectronic Properties of Vacancy-Ordered Double Perovskite Cs 2 TeX 6 (X = Cl – , Br – , I – ) Single Crystals

The soft, dynamic lattice of inorganic lead halide perovskite CsPbX 3 (X = Cl ⁻ , Br ⁻ , I ⁻ ) leads to the emergence of many interesting photophysical and optoelectronic phenomena. However, probing their lattice dynamics with vibrational spectroscopy remains challenging. The influence of the fundamental octahedral building block in the perovskite lattice can be better resolved in zero-dimensional (0D) vacancy-ordered double perovskites of form A 2 BX 6 . Here we study Cs 2 TeX 6 (X = Cl ⁻ , Br ⁻ , I ⁻ ) single crystals to yield detailed insight into the fundamental octahedral building block and to explore the effect that its isolation in the crystal structure has on structural and electronic properties. The isolated [TeX 6 ] 2- octahedral units serve as the vibrational, absorbing, and emitting centers within the crystal. Serving as the vibrational centers, the isolated octahedra inform the likelihood of a random distribution of 10 octahedral symmetries within the mixed-halide spaces, as well as the presence of strong exciton-phonon coupling and anharmonic lattice dynamics. Serving as the absorbing and emitting centers, the isolated octahedra exhibit compositionally tunable absorption (1.50-3.15 eV) and emission (1.31-2.11 eV) energies. Due to greater molecular orbital overlap between neighboring octahedra with increasing halide anion size, there is a transition from a more molecule-like electronic structure in Cs 2 TeCl 6 and Cs 2 TeBr 6 -as expected from the effective 0D nature of these single crystals-to a dispersive electronic structure in Cs 2 TeI 6 , typical of three-dimensional (3D) bulk single crystals.

Monolayer-like lattice dynamics in bulk WSe 2

Understanding the microscopic lattice dynamics is essential for regulating the thermal properties in two-dimensional layered materials. In transition metal dichalcogenides, the layered structures result in different but closely related phonon dispersions between monolayer and bulk. Here, by combining inelastic X-ray scattering and first-principles calculations, the lattice dynamics of tungsten diselenide (WSe 2 ) was investigated comprehensively, and a monolayer-like lattice dynamics in the bulk WSe 2 was revealed. We performed the first temperature-dependent phonon dispersions measurement and obtained the mode Grüneisen parameters of bulk WSe 2 , which are found to be in better agreement with the calculations on the monolayer system than those of the bulk. This observation indicates that lattice dynamics in bulk WSe 2 hold the characteristic of monolayers. The result provides valuable insights into the thermal properties of WSe 2 -based devices.

Lithium's low-temperature phase transitions: Insights into quantum lattice dynamics and superconductivity

The large lattice dynamics of lithium, driven by its low atomic mass, results in energetically similar structures and significant isotope effects under pressure, posing challenges to current theoretical models. Above 20 GPa and at low temperatures, lithium's electronic properties deviate from simple metallic behavior, with superconductivity emerging in a complex, pressure-dependent manner, alongside an unusual isotope effect. The structural phases of 7 Li reported under these conditions are inconsistent across studies, and the structures of 6 Li remain unexamined. These gaps limit our understanding of the effects of pressure on lithium's electronic properties and the role of quantum lattice effects on its structural behavior under pressure. Here, we integrate experimental and theoretical approaches to investigate the low-temperature structural phase boundaries in lithium isotopes. We map the structural phase diagram of 7 Li from 5 to 55 GPa and 15–75 K, identifying the sequence fcc → ℎ⁡R⁢1 → cI16. A pronounced isotope effect is observed, with 6 Li shifting the fcc → ℎ⁡R⁢1 phase boundary to lower pressures at 15 K. Density functional theory calculations further clarify how these structural changes affect superconducting properties, particularly emphasizing the role of the fcc → ℎ⁡R⁢1 transition in lithium's superconductivity. Furthermore, our findings offer insights into the unique behavior of lithium isotopes under pressure.

Comparing first-principles density functionals plus corrections for the lattice dynamics of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6

The enigmatic mechanism underlying unconventional high-temperature superconductivity, especially the role of lattice dynamics, has remained a subject of debate. Theoretical insights have long been hindered due to the lack of an accurate first-principles description of the lattice dynamics of cuprates. Recently, using the r2SCAN meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) functional, we have been able to achieve accurate phonon spectra of an insulating cuprate YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6 and discover significant magnetoelastic coupling in experimentally interesting Cu–O bond stretching optical modes [Ning et al., Phys. Rev. B 107, 045126 (2023)]. We extend this work by comparing Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof and r2SCAN performances with corrections from the on-site Hubbard U and the D4 van der Waals (vdW) methods, aiming at further understanding on both the materials science side and the density functional side. We demonstrate the importance of vdW and self-interaction corrections for accurate first-principles YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6 lattice dynamics. Since r2SCAN by itself partially accounts for these effects, the good performance of r2SCAN is now more fully explained. Finally, in addition, the performances of the Tao–Mo series of meta-GGAs, which are constructed in a different way from the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-GGA and its revised version r2SCAN, are also compared and discussed.

Evolution of Charge-Lattice Dynamics across the Kuramoto Synchronization Phase Diagram of Quantum Tunneling Polarons in Cuprate Superconductors

Because of its sensitivity to the instantaneous structure factor, S(Q,t = 0), Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) is a powerful tool for probing the dynamic structure of condensed matter systems in which the charge and lattice dynamics are coupled. When applied to hole-doped cuprate superconductors, EXAFS has revealed the presence of internal quantum tunneling polarons (IQTPs). An IQTP arises in EXAFS as a two-site distribution for certain Cu–O pairs, which is also duplicated in inelastic scattering but not observed in standard diffraction measurements. The Cu–Sr pair distribution has been found to be highly anharmonic and strongly correlated to both the IQTPs and to superconductivity, as, for example, in YSr 2 Cu 2.75 Mo 0.25 O 7.54 (T c =84 K). In order to describe such nontrivial, anharmonic charge-lattice dynamics, we have proposed a model Hamiltonian for a prototype six-atom cluster, in which two Cu-apical-O IQTPs are charge-transfer bridged through Cu atoms by an O atom in the CuO 2 plane and are anharmonically coupled via a Sr atom. By applying an exact diagonalization procedure to this cluster, we have verified that our model indeed produces an intricate interplay between charge and lattice dynamics. Then, by using the Kuramoto model for the synchronization of coupled quantum oscillators, we have found a first-order phase transition for the IQTPs into a synchronized, phase-locked phase. Most importantly, we have shown that this transition results specifically from the anharmonicity. Finally, we have provided a phase diagram showing the onset of the phase-locking of IQTPs as a function of the charge-lattice and anharmonic couplings in our model. We have found that the charge, initially confined to the apical oxygens, is partially pumped into the CuO 2 plane in the synchronized phase, which suggests a possible connection between the synchronized dynamic structure and high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC) in doped cuprates.

Lattice dynamics and thermodynamics for δ -plutonium from density functional theory

Here, we present results from density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the lattice dynamics (phonons) and thermodynamics for δ-phase plutonium. The fully relativistic electronic structure is calculated assuming a three-dimensional noncollinear magnetic structure in conjunction with DFT and the general gradient approximation for the electron exchange and correlation interactions. The electronic-structure model is further enhanced by addressing strong orbital-orbital coupling via the conventional orbital-polarization (OP) scheme as has been successfully done for plutonium. The temperature dependence of the phonons is calculated within the self-consistent ab initio lattice dynamics approach. The obtained phonons compare very well with measurements although a modest overestimation of the transverse L-point [ξξξ] phonon is acknowledged. Calculated thermal vibration amplitudes and the associated Debye-Waller temperatures are close to experiments. Lattice, electronic, and magnetic contributions to the heat capacity are predicted and consistent to a few percent with that deduced from experimental data. Good agreement is only achieved when a magnetic contribution to the specific heat is recognized. The parameter-free DFT+OP electronic model is thus capable of predicting phonon properties and thermodynamic behavior of δ-phase plutonium rather accurately.

How Proton Incorporation Reshapes Lattice Dynamics In BaSnO 3 ‐Type Proton Conductors

Proton conduction in acceptor-doped perovskites is fundamentally a vibronic process: mobile H + and D + do not move independently, but dynamically co-vibrate with the surrounding oxygen–metal framework. Direct experimental evidence for this behavior is presented using in situ 119⁢ 𝑆⁢𝑛 nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopy (NRVS) on hydrated, deuterated, and dry 𝐵⁢𝑎⁢𝑆⁢𝑛 1−𝑥⁢ 𝑌 𝑥 ⁢𝑂 3−𝛿 . Hydration induces systematic redistributions in the Sn-projected phonon density of states (PDOS), including an upshift of the first spectral moment by about 0.4 meV, indicating a stiffening of the extended Sn–O network. H/D isotopic substitution leaves the Sn-projected PDOS largely unchanged, with only subtle isotope-dependent spectral reweighting, demonstrating that protonic degrees of freedom are not localized oscillators but are embedded in collective lattice modes. These results are rationalized using a classical coupled proton–phonon oscillator model that links the observed PDOS variations to changes in effective force constants and vibrational mass terms. The model captures how H + and D + participate in cooperative lattice dynamics rather than forming isolated OH/OD entities. Overall, NRVS probes proton–lattice coupling in ceramic proton conductors and quantitatively describes how protonic defects modulate host lattice dynamics to enable phonon-assisted long-range proton transport.

Phonon confinement and interface lattice dynamics of ultrathin high- k rare earth sesquioxide films: the case of Eu 2 O 3 on YSZ(001)

The spatial confinement of atoms at surfaces and interfaces significantly alters the lattice dynamics of thin films, heterostructures and multilayers. Ultrathin films with high dielectric constants (high-k) are of paramount interest for applications as gate layers in current and future integrated circuits. Here we report a lattice dynamics study of high-k Eu 2 O 3 films with thicknesses of 21.3, 2.2, 1.3, and 0.8 nm deposited on YSZ(001). The Eu-partial phonon density of states (PDOS), obtained from nuclear inelastic scattering, exhibits broadening of the phonon peaks accompanied by up to a four-fold enhancement of the number of low-energy states compared to the ab initio calculated PDOS of a perfect Eu 2 O 3 crystal. Our analysis demonstrates that while the former effect reflects the reduced phonon lifetimes observed in thin films due to scattering from lattice defects, the latter phenomenon arises from an ultrathin EuO layer formed between the thin Eu 2 O 3 film and the YSZ(001) substrate. Thus, our work uncovers another potential source of vibrational anomalies in thin films and multilayers, which has to be cautiously considered.

A high-throughput framework for lattice dynamics

We develop an automated high-throughput workflow for calculating lattice dynamical properties from first principles including those dictated by anharmonicity. The pipeline automatically computes interatomic force constants (IFCs) up to 4th order from perturbed training supercells, and uses the IFCs to calculate lattice thermal conductivity, coefficient of thermal expansion, and vibrational free energy and entropy. It performs phonon renormalization for dynamically unstable compounds to obtain real effective phonon spectra at finite temperatures and calculates the associated free energy corrections. The methods and parameters are chosen to balance computational efficiency and result accuracy, assessed through convergence testing and comparisons with experimental measurements. Deployment of this workflow at a large scale would facilitate materials discovery efforts toward functionalities including thermoelectrics, contact materials, ferroelectrics, aerospace components, as well as general phase diagram construction.

Constraints on magnetism and correlations in RuO 2 from lattice dynamics and Mössbauer spectroscopy

We provide experimental evidence for the absence of a magnetic moment in bulk RuO 2 , a candidate altermagnetic material, by using a combination of Mössbauer spectroscopy, nuclear forward scattering, inelastic X-ray and neutron scattering, and density functional theory calculations. Using complementary Mössbauer and nuclear forward scattering, we determine the Ru magnetic hyperfine splitting to be negligible. Inelastic X-ray and neutron scattering-derived lattice dynamics of RuO 2 are compared to density functional theory calculations of varying flavors. Comparisons among theory with experiments indicate that electronic correlations, rather than magnetic order, are key in describing the lattice dynamics.

Critical role of magnetic moments in the lattice dynamics of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6

The role of lattice dynamics in unconventional high-temperature superconductivity is still vigorously debated. Theoretical insights into this problem have long been prevented by the absence of an accurate first-principles description of the combined electronic, magnetic, and lattice degrees of freedom. Utilizing the recently constructed r 2 SCAN density functional that stabilizes the antiferromagnetic (AFM) state of the pristine oxide YBa 2 ⁢Cu 3 ⁢O 6 , we faithfully reproduce the experimental dispersion of key phonon modes. Here we further find significant magnetoelastic coupling in numerous high-energy Cu-O bond stretching optical branches, where the AFM results improve over the soft nonmagnetic phonon bands.

Influence of local symmetry on lattice dynamics coupled to topological surface states

Herein we investigate coupled electron-lattice dynamics in the topological insulator Bi 2 Te 3 with time-resolved photoemission and time-resolved x-ray diffraction. It is well established that coherent phonons can be launched by optical excitation, but selection rules generally restrict these modes to zone-center wave vectors and Raman-active branches. We find that the topological surface state couples to additional modes, including a continuum of surface-projected bulk modes from both Raman and infrared branches, with possible contributions from surface-localized modes when they exist. Our calculations show that this surface vibrational spectrum occurs naturally as a consequence of the translational and inversion symmetries broken at the surface, without requiring the splitting-off of surface-localized phonon modes. The generality of this result suggests that coherent phonon spectra are useful by providing unique fingerprints for identifying surface states in more controversial materials. These effects may also expand the phase space for tailoring surface state wave functions via ultrafast optical excitation.

Lattice Dynamics and Structural Phase Transitions in Eu 2 O 3

Using the density functional theory, we study the structural and lattice dynamical properties of europium sesquioxide (Eu 2 O 3 ) in the cubic, trigonal, and monoclinic phases. The obtained lattice parameters and energies of the Raman modes show a good agreement with the available experimental data. The Eu-partial phonon density of states calculated for the cubic structure is compared with the nuclear inelastic scattering data obtained from a 20 nm thick Eu 2 O 3 film deposited on a YSZ substrate. A small shift of the experimental spectrum to higher energies results from a compressive strain induced by the substrate. On the basis of lattice and phonon properties, we analyze the mechanisms of structural transitions between different phases of Eu 2 O 3 .

Spin-lattice dynamics of surface vs core magnetization in Fe nanoparticles

Magnetization of clusters is often simulated using atomistic spin dynamics for a fixed lattice. Coupled spinlattice dynamics simulations of the magnetization of nanoparticles have up to now neglected the change in the size of the atomic magnetic moments near surfaces. We show that the introduction of variable magnetic moments leads to a better description of experimental data for the magnetization of small Fe nanoparticles. To this end we divide atoms into a surface-near shell and a core with bulk properties. Here, it is demonstrated that both the magnitude of the shell magnetic moment and the exchange interactions need to be modified to obtain a fair representation of the experimental data. This allows for a reasonable description of the average magnetic moment versus cluster size, and also the cluster magnetization versus temperature.

Lattice dynamics of 119 Sn impurity in a bcc-Cr crystal

The chromium crystal doped with 119 Sn isotope was studied using the nuclear resonance inelastic x-ray scattering and first principles calculations. The Sn partial phonon density of states (PDOS) was obtained for three temperatures that correspond to different magnetic states of Cr. At all temperatures, the energy spectrum consists of a broad band around 18 meV and a narrow peak at 43 meV. The additional peak around 39 meV is observed only in the magnetically ordered phases, indicating the influence of magnetic order in chromium on lattice dynamics. The partial PDOS calculated with the antiferromagnetic order on Cr atoms show a very good agreement with the experimental data. It is revealed that the high-energy peak is lying above the phonon spectra of the pure bcc-Cr crystal. These are the local modes with the increased energies due to a strongly reduced distance between Sn and the nearest-neighbor Cr atoms.

Discovery of enhanced lattice dynamics in a single-layered hybrid perovskite

Layered hybrid perovskites exhibit emergent physical properties and exceptional functional performances, but the coexistence of lattice order and structural disorder severely hinders our understanding of these materials. One unsolved problem regards how the lattice dynamics are affected by the dimensional engineering of the inorganic frameworks and their interaction with the molecular moieties. Here, we address this question by using a combination of spontaneous Raman scattering, terahertz spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations. This approach reveals the structural dynamics in and out of equilibrium and provides unexpected observables that differentiate single- and double-layered perovskites. While no distinct vibrational coherence is observed in double-layered perovskites, an off-resonant terahertz pulse can drive a long-lived coherent phonon mode in the single-layered system. This difference highlights the dramatic change in the lattice environment as the dimension is reduced, and the findings pave the way for ultrafast structural engineering and high-speed optical modulators based on layered perovskites.
