LaSalle Leaking Pin PIE Proposal

Determine the most probable root cause of the LaSalle fuel rod failure, distinguish primary failure mechanisms from post-failure degradation, and assess whether the condition is isolated or indicative of a broader issue affecting similar rods or assemblies. Results will support decisions related to core operation, fuel management, and corrective actions.

Demonstration of Electrolyzer Operation at a Nuclear Plant to Allow for Dynamic Participation in an Organized Electricity Market and In-House Hydrogen Supply

This document details the execution of Cooperative Agreement DE-EE0008849, “demonstration of electrolyzer operation at a nuclear plant to allow for dynamic participation in an organized electricity market and in-house hydrogen supply” during the performance period of 10/1/2019 – 9/30/2024. The project was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). Constellation Energy Generation, LLC (formerly Exelon Generation Company, LLC) is the prime recipient of the award. Other members of the project team are INL, NREL, ANL and Nel Hydrogen. The main project objective was to demonstrate an end-to-end integrated grid-scale carbon-free H 2 production, storage and utilization pilot plant at a nuclear generating facility. The project also aimed to evaluate market opportunities and regulatory requirements related to the participation of integrated hydrogen production and nuclear plant facilities in organized power markets, by demonstrating dynamic control and operation of the electrolyzer and assessing the economics of dynamic participation combined with the revenue streams from hydrogen production. On March 7th , 2023 Constellation started hydrogen production at it’s Nine Mile Point Nuclear Plant in Oswego, New York. The PEM electrolyzer operating at Nine Mile Point uses 1.25 megawatt of nuclear electricity to produce 560 kilograms of clean hydrogen per day, more than enough to meet the plant’s operational hydrogen use. It will also help set the stage for possible large-scale deployments at other clean energy centers in Constellation’s fleet that would couple clean hydrogen production with storage and other on-site uses. Employing the lessons learned from the 1.25 MW demonstration-scale, nuclear-powered clean hydrogen production facility at Nine Mile Point, Constellation was a major participant in the MachH2 hydrogen hub recently selected for up to $\$$1 billion by the Department of Energy (DOE) as part of the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Constellation will use a portion of the hub funding to build the world’s largest nuclear-powered clean hydrogen production facility at its LaSalle Clean Energy Center in Illinois. The project was featured in a number of news articles and press releases and received 2 awards. At the 2023 DOE HFTO’s Annual Merit Review meeting, the P.I. Dr. Uuganbayar Otgonbaatar and project manager Robert Beaumont were recognized for “outstanding achievements in the development and demonstration of a first-of-a-kind clean hydrogen production facility, powered by carbon-free nuclear energy, at the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station in Oswego, New York.” The project was also awarded 2023 Nuclear Energy Institute’s Top Innovative Practice award.

Organo‐Functionalized Lacunary Double Cubane‐Type Oxometallates: Synthesis, Structure, and Properties of [(M II Cl) 2 (V IV O) 2 {((HOCH 2 CH 2 )(H)N(CH 2 CH 2 O))(HN(CH 2 CH 2 O) 2 )} 2 ] (M=Co, Zn)

Abstract Organofunctionalized tetranuclear clusters [(M II Cl) 2 (V IV O) 2 {((HOCH 2 CH 2 )(H)N(CH 2 CH 2 O))(HN(CH 2 CH 2 O) 2 )} 2 ] (1, M=Co,2: M=Zn) containing an unprecedented oxometallacyclic {M 2 V 2 Cl 2 N 4 O 8 } (M=Co, Zn) framework have been prepared by solvothermal reactions. The new oxo‐alkoxide compounds were fully characterized by spectroscopic methods, magnetic susceptibility measurement, DFT and ab initio computational methods, and complete single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction structure analysis. The isostructural clusters are formed of edge‐sharing octahedral {VO 5 N} and trigonal bipyramidal {MO 3 NCl} units. Diethanolamine ligates the bimetallic lacunary double cubane core of1and2in an unusual two‐mode fashion, unobserved previously. In the crystalline state, the clusters of1and2are joined by hydrogen bonds to form a three‐dimensional network structure. Magnetic susceptibility data indicate weakly antiferromagnetic interactions between the vanadium centers [J iso (V IV −V IV )=−5.4(1); −3.9(2) cm −1 ], and inequivalent antiferromagnetic interactions between the cobalt and vanadium centers [J iso (V IV −Co II )=−12.6 and −7.5 cm −1 ] contained in1.

Parametric Analysis and Modeling for the Porosity Prediction in Suspension Plasma-Sprayed Coatings

The porous architecture of suspension plasma-sprayed coatings has a significant influence on the coating performances and thus should be properly designed for the intended applications. In this study, YSZ coatings were manufactured by suspension plasma spray (SPS), and a parametric study was performed with five different process parameters: suspension mass load, original powder particle size, substrate surface topology, spray distance, and spray step. Afterward, the porosity of the as-prepared coatings was investigated by imaging and x-ray transmission technique. A multivariate analysis on the collected experimental data was carried out. We report the results indicated that: (1) The total porosity of SPS coatings increases with the decrease in suspension mass load, while it shows the opposite trend by decreasing the spray distance, original powder particle size, substrate roughness, and spray step; (2) The main factor affecting coating total porosity is spray distance. Finally, a predictive model for coating total porosity was developed and was verified by experiments. Control of total porosity by using the predictive model was presented and explained as well.

Evaluation of nano/submicro pores in suspension plasma sprayed YSZ coatings

Nano-submicro pores could considerably influence the coating performances and thus should be carefully designed for the intended applications. However, it is challenging to characterize accurately such small pores in coatings. In this study, YSZ coatings were firstly manufactured by suspension plasma spray (SPS) and the nano-submicro pores in as-prepared coatings were investigated using Ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering (USAXS). Afterwards, a multivariate analysis on the effect of five different process parameters was carried out. The two main results showed that: 1) the nano-submicro pores content in coatings has a negative correlation with suspension mass load and powder size, and a positive correlation with spray distance, spray step, and substrate surface roughness; 2) suspension mass load is the main factor affecting the content of nano-submicro pores. Then, a mathematical model for the prediction of nanosubmicro pores was developed, and the control of nano-submicro pores content by using the predictive model was presented. Finally, the sintering effect on the evolution of nano-submicro pores was studied using USAXS as well.
