Materials Data on LaNi5 by Materials Project

LaNi5 crystallizes in the hexagonal P6/mmm space group. The structure is three-dimensional. La is bonded in a 6-coordinate geometry to eighteen Ni atoms. There are six shorter (2.89 Å) and twelve longer (3.19 Å) La–Ni bond lengths. There are two inequivalent Ni sites. In the first Ni site, Ni is bonded in a 12-coordinate geometry to three equivalent La and six equivalent Ni atoms. All Ni–Ni bond lengths are 2.45 Å. In the second Ni site, Ni is bonded to four equivalent La and eight Ni atoms to form a mixture of corner, edge, and face-sharing NiLa4Ni8 cuboctahedra. All Ni–Ni bond lengths are 2.50 Å.

LaNi5 hydride cryogenic refrigerator test results

A complete LaNi5 hydrogen absorption cryogenic refrigerator system was developed. The system uses low temperature waste heat of approximately 100 C as a power source, and has no moving parts other than self operating valves. The cycle continues automatically by an electronic sequencing timing mechanism for the three compressors which are phased such that a constant supply of high pressure hydrogen gas is provided. It is indicated that with a fully clean hydrogen system, hundreds of thousand cycles should be attainable, even though some degradation may eventually occur. Simple vacuum reactivation of the hydride of moving parts, other than self operating, long life valves, the refrigerators predicted life is extremely long.

LaNi5 Hydrogen-Absorption Cryogenic System

Hydrogen-absorption refrigerating system provides about 650 mW of cooling at 20 to 29 K in continuous, closed-cycle operation. Three thermally cycled absorbers/desorbers act as compressors. System successfully tested below 29 K for over 1,000 h, while separate room-temperature hydride compressor operated continuously for 6,000 h. Due to lack of moving parts, lifetimes of 10 years or more eventually expected.

In situ x-ray and neutron powder diffraction study of LaNi5-xSnx-H systems

This paper will present results of in situ XRD measurements of LaNi4.75Sn0.25 .during the initial absorption-desorption cycle, These measurements were performed under a similar condition to that for LaNi4.75Al0.25 previously reported [1]. The data were analyzed by the Rietveld method. Lattice parameter change and strain formation accompanying hydride phase formation and decomposition will be discussed. In addition, results of in situ neutron diffraction of LaNi4.78Sn0.22, focusing on hydrogen occupation in the hydride phase, will be presented.

Nickel-hydrogen

Because of the disintegration of LaNi5 as the lattice expands on absorbing hydrogen, a nickel hydrogen cell similar to a nickel cadmium cell was designed. The positive electrode is wrapped in a microporous separator and the leads are insulated. A negative conducting grid is inserted and welded to the top of the can into an open ended container which is then turned upside down and filled so that LiNa5 powder occupies all the space not used by the rest of the components. The bottom of the can is then welded on. A fill tube is located either on the bottom or on the top of the can. When welded shut, the cell is put into a pressure bomb and the lanthanum nickel is activated at about 1,000 pounds of hydrogen. Electrolytes are added to the cell as well as whatever amount of hydrogen precharge desired, and the cell is sealed. Advantages and disadvantages of the cell are discussed.

Studies of magnetostriction and spin polarized band structures of rare earth intermetallics

Anisotropic magnetostriction measurements of R6Fe23, R = (Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er) were carried out from 77 K to room temperature. Magnetic fields up to 2.1 Tesla were applied. All the compounds exhibited large magnetostrictions at 77 K, the largest effect being obtained for Tb6Fe23. Saturation magnetostriction values for the compounds were also determined for 77 K and room temperature. Results of the temperature dependence of magnetostriction for Er6Fe23 are in good agreement with Callen and Callen's single ion theory. Therefore, the main sources of magnetostriction in this compound is the Er ion. The spin-up and spin-down electronic energy bands, the density of states and the magnetic moments of YCo5, SmCo5, and GdCo5 were calculated by the spin polarized augmented plane wave technique. The calculations obtained show the origin of the moment, provide good estimates of its magnitude and variation, and the reasons for those variations. They also show the important role of partial charge transfer and of d-d electronic coupling. Calculations for LaNi5 and GdNi5 systems are discussed.

A general computer model for predicting the performance of gas sorption refrigerators

Projected performance requirements for cryogenic spacecraft sensor cooling systems which demand higher reliability and longer lifetimes are outlined. The gas/solid sorption refrigerator is viewed as a potential solution to cryogenic cooling needs. A software model of an entire gas sorption refrigerator system was developed. The numerical model, evaluates almost any combination and order of refrigerator components and any sorbent-sorbate pair or which the sorption isotherm data are available. Parametric curves for predicting system performance were generated for two types of refrigerators, a LaNi5-H2 absorption cooler and a Charcoal-N2 adsorption cooler. It is found that precooling temperature and heat exchanger effectiveness affect the refrigerator performance. It is indicated that gas sorption refrigerators are feasible for a number of space applications.

Design and performance analysis of gas sorption compressors

Compressor kinetics based on gas adsorption and desorption processes by charcoal and for gas absorption and desorption processes by LaNi5 were analyzed using a two-phase model and a three-component model, respectively. The assumption of the modeling involved thermal and mechanical equilibria between phases or among the components. The analyses predicted performance well for compressors which have heaters located outside the adsorbent or the absorbent bed. For the rapidly-cycled compressor, where the heater was centrally located, only the transient pressure compared well with the experimental data.

Rechargeable metal hydrides for spacecraft application

Storing hydrogen on board the Space Station presents both safety and logistics problems. Conventional storage using pressurized bottles requires large masses, pressures, and volumes to handle the hydrogen to be used in experiments in the U.S. Laboratory Module and residual hydrogen generated by the ECLSS. Rechargeable metal hydrides may be competitive with conventional storage techniques. The basic theory of hydride behavior is presented and the engineering properties of LaNi5 are discussed to gain a clear understanding of the potential of metal hydrides for handling spacecraft hydrogen resources. Applications to Space Station and the safety of metal hydrides are presented and compared to conventional hydride storage. This comparison indicates that metal hydrides may be safer and require lower pressures, less volume, and less mass to store an equivalent mass of hydrogen.

Electrochemical Evaluation of LaNi(sub 5-x)Ge(sub x) Metal Hydride Alloys

We report a detailed evaluation of Ge-substituted LaNi(sub 5) for electrochemical application as a negative electrode inalkaline rechargeable cells. Alloys with small substitutions of Ge for Ni show operating pressures, chargeability, cyclic lifetime, and kinetics for hydrogen absorption and desorption all superior to those found in many substituted LaNi(sub 5) alloys.

Kinetics of Hydrogen Diffusion in LaNi(sub 5-x)Sn(sub x) Alloys

Solid-state diffusion of hydrogen in metal hydride (MH) alloys is recognized as the rate determining step in the discharge of MH alloys in alkaline Ni-MH rechargeable cells. In our pursuit of new ternary solutes in LaNi(sub 5) for extended cycle lifetimes, we have observed noticeable improvement in the cycle life with small substitutions of Sn and Ge for Ni. Furthermore, these substituents also facilitate enhanced charge transfer kinetics for hydriding-dehydriding process. In this paper, we report our studies on the kinetics of hydrogen diffusion in LaNi(sub 5-x) Sn(sub x) alloys by electrochemical pulse techniques, chronoamperometry and chronocoulometry.
