LaHg2 crystallizes in the trigonal P-3m1 space group. The structure is two-dimensional and consists of one LaHg2 sheet oriented in the (0, 0, 1) direction. La is bonded in a distorted hexagonal planar geometry to six equivalent Hg atoms. All La–Hg bond lengths are 3.22 Å. Hg is bonded in a distorted trigonal planar geometry to three equivalent La atoms.
LaHg2 crystallizes in the monoclinic C2/m space group. The structure is three-dimensional. La is bonded to twelve equivalent Hg atoms to form a mixture of distorted edge and face-sharing LaHg12 cuboctahedra. There are a spread of La–Hg bond distances ranging from 3.43–3.48 Å. Hg is bonded in a 9-coordinate geometry to six equivalent La and three equivalent Hg atoms. There are one shorter (2.94 Å) and two longer (2.96 Å) Hg–Hg bond lengths.
