Uncovering a chirally suppressed mechanism of oνββ decay with LHC searches

Δ L = 2 lepton number violation (LNV) at the TeV scale could provide an alternative interpretation of positive signal(s) in future neutrinoless double beta (0 νββ ) decay experiments. An interesting class of models from this point of view are those that at low energies give rise to dimension-9 vector operators and a dimension-7 operator, both of whose 0 νββ -decay rates are “chirally suppressed”. We study and compare the sensitivities of 0 νββ -decay experiments and LHC searches to a simplified model in this class of TeV-scale LNV that is also SU(2) L × U(1) Y gauge invariant. The searches for 0 νββ decay, which are here diluted by a chiral suppression of the vector operators, are found to be less constraining than LHC searches whose reach is increased by the assumed kinematic accessibility of the mediator particles. For the chirally suppressed dimension-7 operator generated by TeV-scale mediators, in contrast, 0 νββ -decay searches place strong constraints on the size of the new Yukawa coupling. Signals of this model at the LHC and 0 νββ -decay experiments are entirely uncorrelated with the observed neutrinos masses, as these new sources of LNV give negligible contributions to the latter. We find the prospects for the high-luminosity LHC and ton-scale 0 νββ -decay experiments to uncover the chirally-suppressed mechanism with TeV-scale LNV to be promising. We also comment on the sensitivity of the 0 νββ -decay lifetime to certain unknown low-energy constants that in the case of dimension-9 scalar operators are expected to be large due to non-perturbative renormalization.

Muon to Positron Conversion

Lepton-flavor violation (LFV) has been discovered in the neutrino sector by neutrino oscillation experiments. The minimal extension of the Standard Model (SM) to include neutrino masses allows LFV in the charged sector (CLFV) at the loop level, but at rates that are too small to be experimentally observed. Lepton-number violation (LNV) is explicitly forbidden even in the minimally extended SM, so the observation of an LNV process would be unambiguous evidence of physics beyond the SM. The search for the LNV and CLFV process μ−+N(A,Z)→e++N′(A,Z−2) (referred to as μ−→e+) complements 0νββ decay searches, and is sensitive to potential flavor effects in the neutrino mass-generation mechanism. A theoretical motivation for μ−→e+ is presented along with a review of the status of past μ−→e+ experiments and future prospects. Special attention is paid to an uncertain and potentially dominant background for these searches, namely, radiative muon capture (RMC). The RMC high energy photon spectrum is theoretically understudied and existing measurements insufficiently constrain this portion of the spectrum, leading to potentially significant impacts on current and future μ−→e+ work.

Electronic transport, thermal transport, thermal expansion, and magnetization in the strongly correlated metal LaNi⁢O 3

Perovskite structured LaNiO 3 is a strongly correlated metal with intriguing thermal and magnetic properties. The volume dependence of calculated and measured physical properties can add additional critical information to develop a more in-depth understanding of this strongly correlated phenomenon. Taking advantage of recent single crystal LaNiO 3 growth using the floating-zone method, we have measured the thermal expansion, the magnetostriction, and the pressure dependence of the magnetic susceptibility, which then allows derivation of the Grüneisen parameters γ e = $\frac{dlnN(E_F)}{d lnV}$, γ χ = $\frac{dlnχ}{d lnV}$, as well as of electric and thermal transport properties. We simulate the volume dependence of structural and magnetic properties using Density Functional Theory calculations at the Generalized Gradient Approximation level. A large discrepancy between experimental values and calculated ones suggests that strong correlations are likely to be dynamic in nature. This study also provides a side-by-side comparison of measurements in single crystal and polycrystalline samples of LaNiO 3 to elucidate intrinsic materials properties. A broad hump at high temperatures in the temperature dependence of magnetization found in the single crystal sample of LaNiO 3 has been rationalized by a model that includes the influence of electron correlations on the Landau diamagnetism.

TeV-scale lepton number violation: Connecting leptogenesis, neutrinoless double beta decay, and colliders

In the context of TeV-scale lepton number violating (LNV) interactions, we illustrate the interplay between leptogenesis, neutrinoless double beta ( 0 ν β β ) decay, and LNV searches at proton-proton colliders. Using a concrete model for illustration, we overcome the limitations of previous effective field theory analyses and are able to identify the parameter space where standard thermal leptogenesis is rendered unviable due to washout processes. Moreover, we show how 0 ν β β decay and p p collisions provide complementary probes. We find that the new particle spectrum can have a decisive impact on the relative sensitivity of these two probes. Nonconservation of Lepton Numbers in the Neutrino Sector Could Change the Prospects for Core Collapse Supernova Explosions

We show that interactions violating the conservation of lepton numbers in the neutrino sector could significantly alter the standard low entropy picture for the presupernova collapsing core of a massive star. A rapid neutrino-antineutrino equilibration leads to entropy generation and enhanced electron capture and, hence, a lower electron fraction than in the standard model. This would affect the downstream core evolution, the prospects for a supernova explosion, and the emergent neutrino signal. If realized by lepton-number-violating neutrino self-interactions (LNV 𝜈⁢SI), the relevant mediator mass and coupling ranges can be probed by future accelerator-based experiments.

The Mu2e Experiment and Progress in the Year 2024

The Mu2e Experiment is a search for Charged Lepton Flavor Violation (CLFV) in the process of a coherent neutrinoless mu- N -> e- N transition. This process is allowed under the Standard Model in the presence of neutrino mixing; albeit, at unobservable rates (branching ratio below 10-50). The sensitivity of the Mu2e experiment is a factor of 104 improvement over the current limit. This search both compliments and extends current searches for muon to electron+gamma at MEG and new physics searches at the LHC. Another interesting process that Mu2e will search for is the neutrionless conversion of stopped negative muons into positrons: mu- N -> e+ N'. This process violates both lepton flavor and lepton number (LNV) and would provide proof that neutrinos are Majorana particles. Progress has been made in many areas in preparation for beam. A description of the Mu2e Experiment and a synopsis of this experiment s progress in the year 2024 towards data collection will be presented.
