Integrated Solar Disk Oscillation Measurements Using the Magneto-Optical Filter: Tests with a Two Station Network

The magneto-optical filter (MOF) was used to get high and intermediate l-modes of solar oscillations. For very low l-modes the imaging capability of the MOF is still attractive since it allows a pixel by pixel intensity normalization. However, a crude attempt to get very low l power spectra from Dopplergrams obtained at Mt. Wilson gave noisy results. This means that a careful analysis of all the factors potentially affecting high resolution Dopplergrams should be accomplished. In order to better investigate this problem, a nonimaging channel using the lock-in amplifier technique was considered. Two systems are now operational, one at JPL and the other at University of Rome. Observations in progress are used to discuss the MOF stability, the noise level, and the possible application in asteroseismology.

Testing solar models with global solar oscillations in the 5-minute band

Frequencies of solar oscillation for normal modes described by spherical harmonics with l-values between 0 and 4 are computed. The method of computation is discussed and some of the theoretical uncertainties are examined. It is shown that the standard solar model has eigenfrequencies which do not agree with the frequencies observed for the low l-modes to within the estimated accuracy of either the observed or theoretical frequencies. Four non-standard models are considered: (1) the interior Z abundance is lower than the surface abundance; (2) the interior Z abundance is higher than the surface abundance; (3) the interior Z abundance is altered by mixing; and (4) a large primordial magnetic field remains in the solar core. The effect of all these models on the solar neutrino flux is considered, with the result that the high-Z model is rejected. The conclusions of Bahcall and Ulrich (1971) that a primordial magnetic field increases the neutrino flux are disputed.

Ion-cyclotron waves at Jupiter - Possibility of detection by Ulysses

Recent thermal plasma data and a computer code by Horne (1989) are employed to evaluate the linear-path-integrated gain of waves propagating through the Io to predict the Jovian plasma-wave environment. Estimates of the nonlinear saturation amplitudes are utilized with the thermal plasma data from two frequency bands to study the convective growth of the ion-cyclotron (IC) waves. Strong cyclotron resonant damping is theorized to prevent wave propagation to the lower latitudes, and the thermal plasma and cyclotron resonant energetic ions are expected to further confine the IC waves. L-mode waves below the O(+) gyrofrequency in the equatorial region of the torus are shown to inhabit an unstable region. The IC waves probably achieve nonlinear amplitudes regardless of plasma properties due to the rapid amplification in this region. It is suggested that the Ulysses data complicate the identification of the waves because the magnetometer is not adequately sensitive and because of the low frequency of the plasma-wave detector.
