Z 3 Parafermion in the Double Charge Kondo Model

Quantum impurity models with frustrated Kondo interactions can support quantum critical points with fractionalized excitations. Recent experiments [arXiv:2108.12691] on a circuit containing two coupled metal-semiconductor islands exhibit transport signatures of such a critical point. Here we show using bosonization that the double charge-Kondo model describing the device can be mapped in the Toulouse limit to a sine-Gordon model. Its Bethe-ansatz solution shows that a Z 3 parafermion emerges at the critical point, characterized by a fractional $\frac{1}{2}$ln(3) residual entropy, and scattering fractional charges e/3. Finally, we also present full numerical renormalization group calculations for the model and show that the predicted behavior of conductance is consistent with experimental results.

Order fractionalization in a Kitaev-Kondo model

We describe a mechanism for order fractionalization in a two-dimensional Kondo lattice model, in which electrons interact with a gapless spin liquid of Majorana fermions described by the Yao-Lee (YL) model. When the Kondo coupling to the conduction electrons exceeds a critical value, the model develops a superconducting instability into a state with a a spinor order parameter with charge 4 and spin ( = 1 2. The broken symmetry state develops a gapless Majorana Dirac cone in the bulk. By including an appropriate gauge string, we can show that the charge 4, spinorial order develops off-diagonal long range order that allows electrons to coherently tunnel arbitrarily long distances through the spin liquid.

Two-channel multi-impurity Kondo model: RKKY-induced criticality

We show that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasua-Yoisida interaction between overscreened spins in two-channel Kondo impurity systems is a relevant perturbation when the number of impurities N is greater than 3 driving the system to a new quantum critical point with anomalous dimensions $\frac{1}{(𝑁+1)}$ for the spin operator and the Sommerfeld coefficient of the specific heat scales as 𝛾 ∼ 𝑇 −$\frac{3}{𝑁+1}$ . The critical point universal properties are relevant to many strong correlation problems, such as impurity placed in a Majorana metal and the multichannel Kondo lattice model of heavy fermion materials. In conclusion, we discuss relevance of our results for cluster DMFT studies of quantum criticality.

Skyrmion crystals in the triangular Kondo lattice model

We present a systematic study of the formation of skyrmion crystals in a triangular Kondo Lattice model for generic electron filling fractions. Our results indicate that the four-sublattice chiral antiferromagnetic ordering that was reported more than one decade ago can be understood as the dense limit of a sequence of skyrmion crystals whose lattice parameter is dictated by the Fermi wave-vector. This observation has important implications for the ongoing search of skyrmion crystals in metallic materials with localized magnetic moments.

A microscopic Kondo lattice model for the heavy fermion antiferromagnet CeIn 3

Electrons at the border of localization generate exotic states of matter across all classes of strongly correlated electron materials and many other quantum materials with emergent functionality. Heavy electron metals are a model example, in which magnetic interactions arise from the opposing limits of localized and itinerant electrons. This remarkable duality is intimately related to the emergence of a plethora of novel quantum matter states such as unconventional superconductivity, electronic-nematic states, hidden order and most recently topological states of matter such as topological Kondo insulators and Kondo semimetals and putative chiral superconductors. The outstanding challenge is that the archetypal Kondo lattice model that captures the underlying electronic dichotomy is notoriously difficult to solve for real materials. Here we show, using the prototypical strongly-correlated antiferromagnet CeIn 3 , that a multi-orbital periodic Anderson model embedded with input from ab initio bandstructure calculations can be reduced to a simple Kondo-Heisenberg model, which captures the magnetic interactions quantitatively. We validate this tractable Hamiltonian via high-resolution neutron spectroscopy that reproduces accurately the magnetic soft modes in CeIn 3 , which are believed to mediate unconventional superconductivity. Our study paves the way for a quantitative understanding of metallic quantum states such as unconventional superconductivity.

Kondo Lattice Model of Magic-Angle Twisted-Bilayer Graphene: Hund’s Rule, Local-Moment Fluctuations, and Low-Energy Effective Theory

For this work, we apply a generalized Schrieffer-Wolff transformation to the extended Anderson-like topological heavy fermion (THF) model for the magic-angle (θ=1.05°) twisted bilayer graphene (MATBLG) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 047601 (2022)], to obtain its Kondo lattice limit. In this limit localized $\mathcal{f}$ electrons on a triangular lattice interact with topological conduction $\mathcal{c}$ electrons. By solving the exact limit of the THF model, we show that the integer fillings ν=0, ±1, ±2 are controlled by the heavy $\mathcal{f}$ electrons, while ν=±3 is at the border of a phase transition between two $\mathcal{f}$-electron fillings. For ν=0, ±1, ±2, we then calculate the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions between the $\mathcal{f}$ moments in the full model and analytically prove the SU(4) Hund’s rule for the ground state which maintains that two $\mathcal{f}$ electrons fill the same valley-spin flavor. Our (ferromagnetic interactions in the) spin model dramatically differ from the usual Heisenberg antiferromagnetic interactions expected at strong coupling. We show the ground state in some limits can be found exactly by employing a positive semidefinite “bond-operators” method. We then compute the excitation spectrum of the $\mathcal{f}$ moments in the ordered ground state, prove the stability of the ground state favored by RKKY interactions, and discuss the properties of the Goldstone modes, the (reason for the accidental) degeneracy of (some of) the excitation modes, and the physics of their phase stiffness. We develop a low-energy effective theory for the $\mathcal{f}$ moments and obtain analytic expressions for the dispersion of the collective modes. We discuss the relevance of our results to the spin-entropy experiments in TBG.

Multichannel Topological Kondo Effect

A Coulomb blockaded M-Majorana island coupled to normal metal leads realizes a novel type of Kondo effect where the effective impurity “spin” transforms under the orthogonal group SO⁡(M). The impurity spin stems from the nonlocal topological ground state degeneracy of the island and thus the effect is known as the topological Kondo effect. We introduce a physically motivated N-channel generalization of the topological Kondo model. Starting from the simplest case N =2, we conjecture a stable intermediate coupling fixed point and evaluate the resulting low-temperature impurity entropy. The impurity entropy indicates that an emergent Fibonacci anyon can be realized in the N =2 model. We also map the case N =2, M =4 to the conventional four-channel Kondo model and find the conductance at the intermediate fixed point. By using the perturbative renormalization group, we also analyze the large-N limit, where the fixed point moves to weak coupling. In the isotropic limit, we find an intermediate stable fixed point, which is stable to “exchange” coupling anisotropies, but unstable to channel anisotropy. We evaluate the fixed point impurity entropy and conductance to obtain experimentally observable signatures of our results. Here, in the large-N limit, we evaluate the full crossover function describing the temperature-dependent conductance.

Exotic Kondo Phases: the non-Kramers Doniach phase diagram

This is the final report for the early career award “Exotic Kondo Phases: the non-Kramers Doniach phase diagram”. This project searched for exotic novel phases in heavy fermion materials and explored the possible phases of the two-channel Kondo model. Significant results include an enhanced understanding of the channel-symmetry breaking heavy Fermi liquid and its spinorial nature; a novel platform for realizing Majorana defects in topological defects in two-channel Kondo insulators; and a new non-equilibrium way to realize multi-channel Kondo models.

Relevance of anisotropy in the Kondo effect: Lessons from the symplectic case

A Kondo model with symplectic symmetry was recently put forward as the effective low-energy theory of a superconducting-island device coupled to multiple leads. This model, which possesses non-Fermi liquid physics and effective anyons, was argued to belong to the class of topological Kondo effects. Here, we clarify the extent of stability of its exotic fixed point using perturbative and numerical renormalization group in conjunction with bosonization and conformal field theory. In contrast to previous claims, we show that asymmetry in the coupling to the leads destabilizes the non-Fermi liquid. Other destabilizing perturbations include asymmetry in the superconducting pairing or internal energy of the individual quantum dots in the island. Nevertheless, these perturbations all generate the same relevant operators. Thus, only a small number of couplings need to be tuned individually, and these can be selected according to experimental convenience. Our results highlight a common misconception that anisotropy in single-channel Kondo couplings is always irrelevant. As demonstrated, relevant terms will emerge whenever the group generators do not span the full space of impurity operators. This calls for a more detailed inspection of models that exhibit this property, such as large-spin impurities and SO⁡( M ) Kondo models.

Reply to: “Extracting Kondo temperature of strongly-correlated systems from the inverse local magnetic susceptibility”

In his comment1, Katanin reanalyzes our LDA + DMFT results for the temperature-dependent static local spin susceptibility of Sr 2 RuO 4 and V 2 O 3 fitting them to a Curie–Weiss (CW) form, χ(T) ≃ a/(T + θ). Invoking Wilson’s analysis of the impurity susceptibility of the spin-½ one-channel Kondo model (1CKM) in the wide-band limit, he extracts spin Kondo temperatures using T K = θ/√2, obtaining T K = 350 K and 100 K for Sr 2 RuO 4 and V 2 O 3 , respectively. Noting that these are significantly smaller than the scales $T$$^{onset}_{sp}$ = 2300 K and 1000 K reported in ref. 2, he argues that our $T$$^{onset}_{sp}$ scales “do not characterize the screening process”.

Conductance of a dissipative quantum dot: Nonequilibrium crossover near a non-Fermi-liquid quantum critical point

In this work, we find the nonlinear conductance of a dissipative resonant level in the nonequilibrium steady state near its quantum critical point. The system consists of a spin-polarized quantum dot connected to two resistive leads that provide ohmic dissipation. We focus on the crossover from the strong-coupling, non-Fermi-liquid regime to the weak-coupling, Fermi-liquid ground state, a crossover driven by the instability of the quantum critical point to hybridization asymmetry or detuning of the level in the dot. We show that the crossover properties are given by tunneling through an effective single barrier described by the boundary sine-Gordon model. The nonlinear conductance is then obtained from thermodynamic Bethe ansatz results in the literature, which were developed to treat tunneling in a Luttinger liquid. The current-voltage characteristics are thus found for any value of the resistance of the leads. For the special case of lead resistance equal to the quantum resistance, we find mappings onto, first, the two-channel Kondo model and, second, an effectively noninteracting model from which the nonlinear conductance is found analytically. A key feature of the general crossover function is that the nonequilibrium crossover driven by applied bias is different from the crossover driven by temperature---we find that the nonequilibrium crossover is substantially sharper. Finally, we compare to experimental results for both the bias and temperature crossovers: the agreement is excellent.

Ferrimagnetism of ultracold fermions in a multiband Hubbard system

Strongly correlated materials feature multiple electronic orbitals, which are crucial to accurately understanding their many-body properties. In such multiband models, quantum interference can lead to flat energy bands with large degeneracy that gives rise to itinerant magnetic phases. Here, we report on signatures of a ferrimagnetic state realized in a Lieb lattice with ultracold fermions, characterized by antialigned magnetic moments with antiferromagnetic correlations, and concomitant with a finite spin polarization. The signatures remain robust when increasing repulsive interactions from the weakly interacting to the Heisenberg regime and emerge when continuously tuning the lattice unit cell from a square to a Lieb geometry. Our flexible approach paves the way toward exploring exotic phases, such as quantum spin liquids in kagome lattices and heavy fermion behavior in Kondo models.

Topological quantum computation on a chiral Kondo chain

We describe the chiral Kondo chain model based on the symplectic Kondo effect and demonstrate that it has a quantum critical ground state populated by non-Abelian anyons. We show that the fusion channel of two arbitrary anyons can be detected by locally coupling the two anyons to an extra single channel of chiral current and measuring the corresponding conductance at a finite frequency. Based on such measurements, we propose that the chiral Kondo chain model with symplectic symmetry can be used for the implementation of measurement-only topological quantum computations, and it possesses several distinct features favorable for such applications. Furthermore, the sources and effects of errors in the proposed system are analyzed and possible material realizations are discussed.

Probing single electron scattering through a non-Fermi-liquid charge-Kondo device

Among the exotic and yet unobserved features of multichannel Kondo impurity models is their subunitary single electron scattering. In the two-channel Kondo model, for example, an incoming electron is fully scattered into a many-body excitation such that the single particle Green's function vanishes. Here, we propose to directly observe these features in a charge-Kondo device encapsulated in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, within a device already studied by Duprez et al. [Science 366, 1243 (2019)]. Finally, we provide detailed predictions for the visibility and phase of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations depending on the number of coupled channels and the asymmetry of their couplings.

The scaled-invariant Planckian metal and quantum criticality in Ce1−xNdxCoIn5

Abstract The mysterious Planckian metal state, showing perfect T -linear resistivity associated with universal scattering rate, 1/ τ = α k B T /ℏ with α ~ 1, has been observed in the normal state of various strongly correlated superconductors close to a quantum critical point. However, its microscopic origin and link to quantum criticality remains an outstanding open problem. Here, we observe quantum-critical T / B -scaling of the Planckian metal state in resistivity and heat capacity of heavy-electron superconductor Ce 1− x Nd x CoIn 5 in magnetic fields near the edge of antiferromagnetism at the critical doping x c ~ 0.03. We present clear experimental evidences of Kondo hybridization being quantum critical at x c . We provide a generic microscopic mechanism to qualitatively account for this quantum critical Planckian state within the quasi-two dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model near Kondo breakdown transition. We find α is a non-universal constant and depends inversely on the square of Kondo hybridization strength.

Breakdown of order fractionalization in the CPT model

Here, we present an analysis of the half-filled CPT model, an analytically tractable Kondo lattice model with Yao-Lee spin-spin interactions on a 3D hyperoctagon lattice, proposed by Coleman, Panigrahi, and Tsvelik. Previous studies have established that the CPT model exhibits odd-frequency triplet superconductivity and order fractionalization. Through asymptotic analyses in the small- and large- Kondo coupling limits, we identify a quantum critical point at , marking a transition from a superconductor to a Kondo insulator. By estimating the vison gap energy to account for thermal gauge fluctuations, we determine the energy scales governing the thermal breakdown of order fractionalization. Moreover, at large the Kondo insulator undergoes orbital decoupling, leading to the formation of a decoupled Kitaev orbital liquid. These findings and analogies with the -gauged model lead us to propose a tentative phase diagram for the CPT model at half-filling.

Solvable 3D Kondo Lattice Exhibiting Pair Density Wave, Odd-Frequency Pairing, and Order Fractionalization

The Kondo lattice model plays a key role in our understanding of quantum materials, but a lack of small parameters has posed a long-standing problem. We present a 3 dimensional S= 1 2 Kondo lattice model describing a spin liquid within an electron sea. Strong correlations in the spin liquid are treated exactly, enabling a controlled analytical approach. Like a Peierls or BCS phase, a logarithmically divergent susceptibility leads to an instability into a new phase at arbitrarily small Kondo coupling. Our solution captures a plethora of emergent phenomena, including odd-frequency pairing, pair density wave formation and order fractionalization. The ground-state state is a pair density wave with a fractionalized charge e, S = 1/2 order parameter, formed between electrons and Majorana fermions.

Frustrated Kondo impurity triangle: A simple model of deconfinement

We report that the concepts of deconfinement and topological order are of great current interest for quantum information science and for our understanding of quantum materials. Here, we introduce a simple model of three antiferromagnetically coupled Kondo impurities, a Kondo triangle, which can be used to further extend the application of these concepts to electronic systems. We show that, by tuning the magnetic frustration, the Kondo triangle undergoes a quantum phase transition between two phases of unbroken symmetry, signaling a phase transition beyond the Landau paradigm. We demonstrate that the frustrated spin liquid phase is described by a three-channel Kondo (3CK) fixed point and thus displays an irrational ground state degeneracy. Using an Abrikosov pseudofermion representation, this quantum state is categorized by an emergent U(1) gauge field and its projective symmetry group. The gauge theory is deconfining in the sense that a miniature Wilson loop orders and topological defects (instantons in the gauge field) are expelled. This phase persists in the presence of moderate Kondo screening until proliferation of topological defects leads to a quantum phase transition to an unfrustrated Fermi liquid phase. Based on this evidence, we propose that the 3CK phase displays topological order in a similar sense as gapless spin liquids.
