Skyrmion crystals in the triangular Kondo lattice model

We present a systematic study of the formation of skyrmion crystals in a triangular Kondo Lattice model for generic electron filling fractions. Our results indicate that the four-sublattice chiral antiferromagnetic ordering that was reported more than one decade ago can be understood as the dense limit of a sequence of skyrmion crystals whose lattice parameter is dictated by the Fermi wave-vector. This observation has important implications for the ongoing search of skyrmion crystals in metallic materials with localized magnetic moments.

A microscopic Kondo lattice model for the heavy fermion antiferromagnet CeIn 3

Electrons at the border of localization generate exotic states of matter across all classes of strongly correlated electron materials and many other quantum materials with emergent functionality. Heavy electron metals are a model example, in which magnetic interactions arise from the opposing limits of localized and itinerant electrons. This remarkable duality is intimately related to the emergence of a plethora of novel quantum matter states such as unconventional superconductivity, electronic-nematic states, hidden order and most recently topological states of matter such as topological Kondo insulators and Kondo semimetals and putative chiral superconductors. The outstanding challenge is that the archetypal Kondo lattice model that captures the underlying electronic dichotomy is notoriously difficult to solve for real materials. Here we show, using the prototypical strongly-correlated antiferromagnet CeIn 3 , that a multi-orbital periodic Anderson model embedded with input from ab initio bandstructure calculations can be reduced to a simple Kondo-Heisenberg model, which captures the magnetic interactions quantitatively. We validate this tractable Hamiltonian via high-resolution neutron spectroscopy that reproduces accurately the magnetic soft modes in CeIn 3 , which are believed to mediate unconventional superconductivity. Our study paves the way for a quantitative understanding of metallic quantum states such as unconventional superconductivity.

Kondo Lattice Model of Magic-Angle Twisted-Bilayer Graphene: Hund’s Rule, Local-Moment Fluctuations, and Low-Energy Effective Theory

For this work, we apply a generalized Schrieffer-Wolff transformation to the extended Anderson-like topological heavy fermion (THF) model for the magic-angle (θ=1.05°) twisted bilayer graphene (MATBLG) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 047601 (2022)], to obtain its Kondo lattice limit. In this limit localized $\mathcal{f}$ electrons on a triangular lattice interact with topological conduction $\mathcal{c}$ electrons. By solving the exact limit of the THF model, we show that the integer fillings ν=0, ±1, ±2 are controlled by the heavy $\mathcal{f}$ electrons, while ν=±3 is at the border of a phase transition between two $\mathcal{f}$-electron fillings. For ν=0, ±1, ±2, we then calculate the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions between the $\mathcal{f}$ moments in the full model and analytically prove the SU(4) Hund’s rule for the ground state which maintains that two $\mathcal{f}$ electrons fill the same valley-spin flavor. Our (ferromagnetic interactions in the) spin model dramatically differ from the usual Heisenberg antiferromagnetic interactions expected at strong coupling. We show the ground state in some limits can be found exactly by employing a positive semidefinite “bond-operators” method. We then compute the excitation spectrum of the $\mathcal{f}$ moments in the ordered ground state, prove the stability of the ground state favored by RKKY interactions, and discuss the properties of the Goldstone modes, the (reason for the accidental) degeneracy of (some of) the excitation modes, and the physics of their phase stiffness. We develop a low-energy effective theory for the $\mathcal{f}$ moments and obtain analytic expressions for the dispersion of the collective modes. We discuss the relevance of our results to the spin-entropy experiments in TBG.

Solvable 3D Kondo Lattice Exhibiting Pair Density Wave, Odd-Frequency Pairing, and Order Fractionalization

The Kondo lattice model plays a key role in our understanding of quantum materials, but a lack of small parameters has posed a long-standing problem. We present a 3 dimensional S= 1 2 Kondo lattice model describing a spin liquid within an electron sea. Strong correlations in the spin liquid are treated exactly, enabling a controlled analytical approach. Like a Peierls or BCS phase, a logarithmically divergent susceptibility leads to an instability into a new phase at arbitrarily small Kondo coupling. Our solution captures a plethora of emergent phenomena, including odd-frequency pairing, pair density wave formation and order fractionalization. The ground-state state is a pair density wave with a fractionalized charge e, S = 1/2 order parameter, formed between electrons and Majorana fermions.

Order fractionalization in a Kitaev-Kondo model

We describe a mechanism for order fractionalization in a two-dimensional Kondo lattice model, in which electrons interact with a gapless spin liquid of Majorana fermions described by the Yao-Lee (YL) model. When the Kondo coupling to the conduction electrons exceeds a critical value, the model develops a superconducting instability into a state with a a spinor order parameter with charge 4 and spin ( = 1 2. The broken symmetry state develops a gapless Majorana Dirac cone in the bulk. By including an appropriate gauge string, we can show that the charge 4, spinorial order develops off-diagonal long range order that allows electrons to coherently tunnel arbitrarily long distances through the spin liquid.

Breakdown of order fractionalization in the CPT model

Here, we present an analysis of the half-filled CPT model, an analytically tractable Kondo lattice model with Yao-Lee spin-spin interactions on a 3D hyperoctagon lattice, proposed by Coleman, Panigrahi, and Tsvelik. Previous studies have established that the CPT model exhibits odd-frequency triplet superconductivity and order fractionalization. Through asymptotic analyses in the small- and large- Kondo coupling limits, we identify a quantum critical point at , marking a transition from a superconductor to a Kondo insulator. By estimating the vison gap energy to account for thermal gauge fluctuations, we determine the energy scales governing the thermal breakdown of order fractionalization. Moreover, at large the Kondo insulator undergoes orbital decoupling, leading to the formation of a decoupled Kitaev orbital liquid. These findings and analogies with the -gauged model lead us to propose a tentative phase diagram for the CPT model at half-filling.

Electron–phonon interaction in Kondo lattice systems

Highlights: • Rigorous study of ground state properties of the Kondo lattice model with an electron–phonon. • The ground state is proved to be unique. • The total spin of the ground state is determined according to the lattice structure. • Novel applications of order preserving operator inequalities. We study ground state properties of the Kondo lattice model with an electron–phonon interaction. The ground state is proved to be unique; in addition, the total spin of the ground state is determined according to the lattice structure. To prove the assertions, an extension of the method of spin reflection positivity is given in terms of order preserving operator inequalities.

Machine learning assisted derivation of minimal low-energy models for metallic magnets

Abstract We consider the problem of extracting a low-energy spin Hamiltonian from a triangular Kondo Lattice Model (KLM). The non-analytic dependence of the effective spin-spin interactions on the Kondo exchange excludes the use of perturbation theory beyond the second order. We then introduce a Machine Learning (ML) assisted protocol to extract effective two- and four-spin interactions. The resulting spin model reproduces the phase diagram of the original KLM as a function of magnetic field and single-ion anisotropy and reveals the effective four-spin interactions that stabilize the field-induced skyrmion crystal phase. Moreover, this model enables the computation of static and dynamical properties with a much lower numerical cost relative to the original KLM. A comparison of the dynamical spin structure factor in the fully polarized phase computed with both models reveals a good agreement for the magnon dispersion even though this information was not included in the training data set.

Ultrafast laser-driven many-body dynamics and Kondo coherence collapse

Ultrafast laser pulse has provided a systematic way to inspect the dynamics of electrons in condensed matter systems. In this paper, by means of time-dependent density matrix renormalization group, we study an ultrafast laser-driven Kondo lattice model, in which conduction electrons are strongly coupled with magnetically local moments. The single-particle spectral function due to strong correlation effects and photon emission in the nonequilibrium states under laser driving are calculated. We find laser field excited collective doublon-hole pairs and an associated transient melting of Kondo coherence phase, signifying the collapse of Kondo energy gap. Moreover, we show that the photon emission, induced by a strong laser field, exhibits a different intensity characteristics than in the equilibrium Kondo insulator, which could be explained by the Kondo collapse and related suppression of both intraband and interband contribution in Kondo melting liquid. This theoretical insight is accessible with time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and high-harmonic generation spectroscopy and will stimulate the investigation of nonequilibrium dynamics and nonlinear phenomenon in heavy fermion systems.

Two-channel multi-impurity Kondo model: RKKY-induced criticality

We show that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasua-Yoisida interaction between overscreened spins in two-channel Kondo impurity systems is a relevant perturbation when the number of impurities N is greater than 3 driving the system to a new quantum critical point with anomalous dimensions $\frac{1}{(𝑁+1)}$ for the spin operator and the Sommerfeld coefficient of the specific heat scales as 𝛾 ∼ 𝑇 −$\frac{3}{𝑁+1}$ . The critical point universal properties are relevant to many strong correlation problems, such as impurity placed in a Majorana metal and the multichannel Kondo lattice model of heavy fermion materials. In conclusion, we discuss relevance of our results for cluster DMFT studies of quantum criticality.

Microscopic Theory of Pair Density Waves in Spin-Orbit Coupled Kondo Lattice

We demonstrate that the discommensuration between the Fermi surfaces of a conduction sea and an underlying spin liquid provides a natural mechanism for the spontaneous formation of pair density waves. Using a recent formulation of the Kondo lattice model that incorporates a Yao Lee spin liquid proposed by the authors, we demonstrate that doping away from half filling induces finite-momentum electron-Majorana pair condensation, resulting in amplitude-modulated pair density waves (PDWs). Our approach provides a precise, analytically tractable pathway for understanding the spontaneous formation of PDWs in higher dimensions and offers a natural mechanism for PDW formation in the absence of Zeeman splitting.

Driven Majorana modes: A route to synthetic $p_x +ip_y$ superconductivity

We propose a protocol to realize synthetic $p_x +ip_y$ superconductors in one-dimensional topological systems that host Majorana fermions. By periodically driving a localized Majorana mode across the system, our protocol realizes a topological pumping of Majorana fermions, analogous to the adiabatic Thouless pumping of electrical charges. Importantly, similar to the realization of a Chern insulator through Thouless pumping, we show that pumping of Majorana zero modes could lead to a $p_x +ip_y$ superconductor in the two dimensions of space and synthetic time. The Floquet theory is employed to map the driven one-dimensional system to a two-dimensional synthetic system by considering frequency as a new dimension. We demonstrate such Floquet $p_x +ip_y$ superconductors using the Kitaev $p$-wave superconductor chain, a prototypical 1D topological system, as well as its more realistic realization in the 1D Kondo lattice model as examples. We further show the appearance of Majorana $π$ mode at the Floquet zone boundary in an intermediate drive frequency region. Our work suggests a driven magnetic spiral coupled to a superconductor as a promising platform for the realization of novel topological superconductors.

The scaled-invariant Planckian metal and quantum criticality in Ce1−xNdxCoIn5

Abstract The mysterious Planckian metal state, showing perfect T -linear resistivity associated with universal scattering rate, 1/ τ = α k B T /ℏ with α ~ 1, has been observed in the normal state of various strongly correlated superconductors close to a quantum critical point. However, its microscopic origin and link to quantum criticality remains an outstanding open problem. Here, we observe quantum-critical T / B -scaling of the Planckian metal state in resistivity and heat capacity of heavy-electron superconductor Ce 1− x Nd x CoIn 5 in magnetic fields near the edge of antiferromagnetism at the critical doping x c ~ 0.03. We present clear experimental evidences of Kondo hybridization being quantum critical at x c . We provide a generic microscopic mechanism to qualitatively account for this quantum critical Planckian state within the quasi-two dimensional Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model near Kondo breakdown transition. We find α is a non-universal constant and depends inversely on the square of Kondo hybridization strength.

Multipolar Skyrmion Crystals in Non-Kramers Doublet Systems

Here, we study the Kondo lattice model of multipolar magnetic moments interacting with conduction electrons on a triangular lattice. Bond-dependent electron hoppings induce a compasslike anisotropy in the effective Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction between multipolar moments. This unique anisotropy stabilizes multipolar skyrmion crystals at zero magnetic field. In a unit cell, the skyrmion fractionalizes into meron composites subject to the conservation of total topological charge. Diverse multipolar phases in the phase diagram give rise to novel spontaneous Hall response of conduction electrons.

Particle-hole symmetric slave-boson method for the mixed valence problem

We introduce an analytic slave-boson method for treating the finite-𝑈 Anderson impurity model. Our approach introduces two bosons to track both 𝑄 ⇌ 𝑄 ± 1 valence fluctuations and reduces to a single symmetric 𝑠 boson in the effective action, encoding all the high-energy atomic physics information in the boson's kinematics, while the low-energy part of the action remains unchanged across finite-𝑈, infinite-𝑈, and Kondo limits. We recover the infinite-𝑈- and Kondo-limit actions from our approach and show that the Kondo resonance already develops in the normal state when the slave boson has yet to condense. We show that the slave rotor and 𝑠 boson have the same algebraic structure, and we establish a unified functional integral framework connecting the 𝑠-boson and slave-rotor representations for the single-impurity Anderson model.

Symmetric Kondo Lattice States in Doped Strained Twisted Bilayer Graphene

We use the topological heavy fermion (THF) model and its Kondo lattice (KL) formulation to study the possibility of a symmetric Kondo (SK) state in twisted bilayer graphene. Via a large-N approximation, we find a SK state in the KL model at fillings v = 0,±1,±2 where a KL model can be constructed. In the SK state, all symmetries are preserved and the local moments are Kondo screened by the conduction electrons. At the mean-field level of the THF model at v = 0,±1,±2,±3 we also find a similar symmetric state that is adiabatically connected to the symmetric Kondo state. We study the stability of the symmetric state by comparing its energy with the ordered (symmetry-breaking) states found in [H. Hu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 131, 026502 (2023)., Z.-D. Song and B. A. Bernevig, Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 047601 (2022).] and find the ordered states to have lower energy at v = 0,±1,±2. However, moving away from integer fillings by doping the light bands, our mean-field calculations find the energy difference between the ordered state and the symmetric state to be reduced, which suggests the loss of ordering and a tendency toward Kondo screening. In order to include many-body effects beyond the mean-field approximation, we also performed dynamical mean-field theory calculations on the THF model in the nonordered phase. The spin susceptibility follows a Curie behavior at v = 0,±1,±2 down to ~2 K where the onset of screening of the local moment becomes visible. This hints to very low Kondo temperatures at these fillings, in agreement with the outcome of our mean-field calculations. At noninteger filling v = ±0.5,±0.8,±1.2 dynamical mean-field theory shows deviations from a 1/T susceptibility at much higher temperatures, suggesting a more effective screening of local moments with doping. Lastly, we study the effect of a C 3⁢z -rotational-symmetry-breaking strain via mean-field approaches and find that a symmetric phase (that only breaks C 3⁢z symmetry) can be stabilized at sufficiently large strain at v = 0,±1,±2. Our results suggest that a symmetric Kondo phase is strongly suppressed at integer fillings, but could be stabilized either at noninteger fillings or by applying strain.

Unified theory of hastatic order and antiferromagnetism in URu 2 Si 2

The hidden-order phase of URu 2 Si 2 has eluded identification for over 35 years. A compelling proposal that explains the Ising heavy-fermion nature of the material is hastatic order: a symmetry-breaking heavy Fermi liquid arising from a spinorial microscopic hybridization. The original hastatic proposal cannot microscopically model the pressure-induced antiferromagnetic phase; and while it predicts a spinorial order parameter, it does not provide any detectable signatures of the spinorial nature. Here, we present a more realistic microscopic model of hastatic order in URu 2 Si 2 based on two conducting electron bands and explore its phase diagram in detail. Our model nontrivially preserves the Ising heavy-fermion physics of the original, while allowing us to tune between the antiferromagnet and hidden order using pressure analogs and magnetic field. Furthermore, our model is also consistent with recent phenomenological predictions of not one, but two, vector order parameters associated with the spinorial order that provide the first microscopic predictions for detecting the spinorial nature.

Unconventional skyrmions in an interfacial frustrated triangular lattice

Magnetic skyrmions are spin topological textures of potential interest in spintronics-related data storage and processing devices. Here, in this work, we show the emergence of unconventional skyrmions in a geometrically frustrated triangular lattice on an inversion-symmetry-breaking two-dimensional electron gas substrate. Starting with a classical double-exchange mechanism, this generic interface induces exotic skyrmionic and unique noncoplanar magnetic states not observed in the equivalent square lattice interface. We study the model by deriving an effective spin Hamiltonian. Large scale classical Monte Carlo simulations provide a quantitative evidence for the emergence of these exotic magnetic states. We found that these chiral magnetic states exhibit a substantial and nonzero topological Hall conductivity. As potential material candidates, we propose Cr/MoS 2 , Fe/MoS 2 , and Fe/WSe 2 interfaces because they have the requisite underlying triangular lattice structures and large spin-orbit coupling.
