Radiative damping of toroidal Alfvén eigenmode in low-shear plasmas

Instabilities of Alfvén eigenmodes (AEs) are of significant concern because they can enhance the cross-field transport of fusion-born alpha particles beyond the neoclassical level in magnetic fusion plasmas. The threshold value of alpha-particle pressure for exciting AEs depends critically on the damping rate of AEs. The damping mechanisms include kinetic damping due to interactions with thermal particles, continuum damping due to AE frequency crossing Alfvén continuum, and radiative damping due to emitting kinetic Alfvén waves (KAWs). The radiative damping is substantial and can even prevail in high-temperature burning plasmas [1]. We revisit the radiative damping analytic theory for TAE in plasmas with low positive magnetic shear, considering TAE with an eigenfrequency near the bottom of TAE-gap and with poloidal harmonics of the same sign (even TAE). In contrast to earlier papers, we provide the damping calculations in real space rather than Fourier space. This approach is straightforward technically and more enlightening from a physics standpoint for benchmarking numerical calculations of radiative damping. The parametric dependence of the resulting damping rate agrees with that of Refs. [2-5], but it has a smaller numerical factor in front of it.

Toroidal Alfven Wave Coupling (Nonlinear Wave-Wave Interactions) on DIII-D

Connect DIII-D physics with space plasma phenomena. In this case of using the toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes and frequency-chirping Reversed-Shear Alfvén eignmodes in DIII-D, we will document how the nonlinear interactions among dipolar Kinetic Alfvén Wave eigenmodes in space plasmas may determine saturation levels of these fluctuations. We seek evidence of nonlinear energy transfer and wave-wave coupling during 3-wave interactions mediated by a much lower-frequency mode. In FY2019, we found evidence of nonlinear “wave-wave” interactions in 175 relevant shots of archival DIII-D data. Toroidal mode number was identified and spectrograms were produced from each shot’s Mirnov coil data. Bispectral analysis was performed using a preliminary version of a new user friendly code derived from a 1995 M.S. thesis at WVU. These results formed a part of a May 2019 M.S. thesis at WVU.

Verification of global gyrokinetic simulation of low frequency mode excited by thermal plasma in spherical tokamak

A low frequency Alfven eigenmode in the ST40 spherical tokamak (ST) is found to be resonantly excited by thermal ions from global gyrokinetic GTC simulations. The analyses of phase-space resonances and wave-particle energy exchanges show that the Beta-induced Alfvén-Acoustic Eigenmode (BAAE) is primarily driven unstable by thermal ions, but is stabilized by energetic particles (EPs). When all kinetic effects are artificially suppressed, GTC simulations in the ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) limit confirm the existence of the MHD eigenmode with a frequency in the BAAEs gap, as previously found by the ideal MHD code NOVA. The kinetic effects of thermal ions induce a frequency downshift compared to the stable BAAE in the MHD simulations. These results support the verification for global gyrokinetic simulations of the BAAE in the ST. However, the simulations do not explain the experimental observations of the BAAE in the ST40, possibly owing to the limitation of the collisionless gyrokinetic Monte Carlo model for the EPs.
