Correlation of Kp with the substorm-injected plasma boundary

The local time position of the low-energy substorm-injected plasma boundary in the dusk to midnight region of the magnetosphere as observed by the geostationary satellite ATS 5 is found to be correlated with the interpolated Kp index. Considering the time resolution of Kp, the correlation is found to be quite close but dependent on season. An estimate of the overall shape and position of the low-energy boundary within this region of the magnetosphere as a function of Kp is found by using a fit to the authors' winter data correlation in conjunction with a fit of data presented by Carpenter (1967) concerning the Kp-related radial positioning of the plasmapause boundary in the postmidnight region. This analysis results in a spiral structure, the scale of which depends on Kp.

Kp dependence of the plasma sheet boundary

An empirical relationship has been obtained between the location of the inner boundary of the plasma sheet along the geostationary orbit and Kp. Through the use of an analytical expression for the shape of the boundary and a relationship between the convection electric field and Kp this result is extended to yield the radial position of the boundary versus Kp. The result illustrates the high degree of sensitivity of measurements in the geostationary orbit region to shifts in the plasma sheet position arising from geomagnetic activity or an increasing convection electric field.

The plasma sheet boundary and Kp

The paper studies data obtained by the suprathermal ion detector aboard the ATS-1 geostationary satellite in order to establish a relation between the local time occurrence of the plasma sheet at the geostationary orbit (6.6 earth radii) and the Kp index. This relation is then used along with Alfven and Falthammer's (1963) equation for the drift path of an electron moving under the combined influence of a homogeneous electric field and a dipole magnetic field to derive an expression that shows the manner in which the inner boundary of the plasma sheet can be expected to vary radially with Kp along the midnight meridian for Kp less than about 4.

Comment on 'Kp dependence on sectors, by I. B. McDiarmid and E. E. Budzinski

A suggestion by McDiarmid and Budzinski that an annual variation of geomagnetic activity can explain a sector polarity asymmetry is shown not to be necessary. The correct explanation is that the Kp-index exhibits systematic errors that enhance the UT variation during Toward polarity and decrease the UT variation during Away polarity.

Solar activity prediction of sunspot numbers (verification). Predicted solar radio flux; predicted geomagnetic indices Ap and Kp

Efforts to further verify a previously reported technique for predicting monthly sunspot numbers over a period of years (1979 to 1989) involved the application of the technique over the period for the maximum epoch of solar cycle 19. Results obtained are presented. Methods and results for predicting solar flux (F10.7 cm) based on flux/sunspot number models, ascent and descent, and geomagnetic activity indices as a function of sunspot number and solar cycle phase classes are included.

A Kp dependent equatorial electric field model

A new model of the earth's electric field in the equatorial plane has been constructed. While many models have been proposed, most of these have had serious shortcomings. They either have only a few parameters and cannot hope to match even large scale variations in the real field, or they are too complex to be suitable starting points for constructing time dependent three dimensional models which include inductive fields. Also, few previous models have a continuous functional dependence upon magnetic disturbance levels. The new model uses only a dozen parameters and yet fits many of the known dependences upon radial distance, local time, and magnetic disturbance level. One of the roles of electric field models is to predict and understand the motion of charged particles. Models like this one which are based upon a time dependent scalar potential can greatly help in the understanding of the motion of equatorial particles during the time periods between substorms.

International Solar-Terrestrial Program Key Parameter Visualization Tool Data: USA_NASA_DDF_ISTP_KP_0057

The Global Geospace Science Program (GGS) is designed to improve greatly the understanding of the flow of energy, mass and momentum in the solar-terrestrial environment with particular emphasis on "Geospace". The Global Geospace Science Program is the US contribution to the International Solar-Terrestrial Physics (ISTP) Science Initiative. This CD-ROM issue describes the WIND and POLAR spacecraft, the scientific experiments carried onboard, the Theoretical and Ground Based investigations which constitute the US Global Geospace Science Program and the ISTP Data Systems which support the data acquisition and analysis effort. The International Solar-Terrestrial Physics Program (ISTP) Key Parameter Visualization Tool (KPVT), provided on the CD-ROM, was developed at the ISTP Science Planning and Operations Facility (SPOF). The KPVT is a generic software package for visualizing the key parameter data produced from all ISTP missions, interactively and simultaneously. The tool is designed to facilitate correlative displays of ISTP data from multiple spacecraft and instruments, and thus the selection of candidate events and data quality control. The software, written in IDL, includes a graphical/widget user interface, and runs on many platforms, including various UNIX workstations, Alpha/Open VMS, Macintosh (680x0 and PowerPC), and PC/Windows NT, Windows 3.1, and Windows 95.
