Novel Nuclear Reactions Observed in Bremsstrahlung-Irradiated Deuterated Metals

d-D nuclear fusion events were observed in an electronscreened, deuterated metal lattice by reacting cold deuterons with hot deuterons (d*) produced by elastically scattered neutrons originating from bremsstrahlung photodissociation (where “d” and “D” denote 2H). Exposure of deuterated materials (ErD3 and TiD2) to photon energies in the range of 2.5 to 2.9 MeV resulted in photodissociation neutrons that were below 400 keV and also the 2.45-MeV neutrons, consistent with 2H(d, n)3He fusion. Additionally, neutron energies of approximately 4 and 5 MeV for TiD2 and ErD3 were measured, consistent with either boosted neutrons from kinetically heated deuterons or Oppenheimer-Phillips stripping reactions in the highly screened environment. Neutron spectroscopy was conducted using calibrated lead shielded liquid (EJ-309) and plastic (stilbene) scintillator detectors. The data support the theoretical analysis in a companion paper, predicting fusion reactions and subsequent reactions in the highly screened environment.

Radiochemical synthesis of pure anhydrous metal halides

Method uses radiation chemistry as practical tool for inorganic preparations and in particular deposition of metals by irradiation of their aqueous metal salt solutions with high energy electrons. Higher valence metal halide is dissolved in organic liquid and exposed to high energy electrons. This causes metal halide to be reduced to a lower valence metal halide.

Production of metals and compounds by radiation chemistry

Preparation of metals and compounds by radiation induced chemical reactions involves irradiation of metal salt solutions with high energy electrons. This technique offers a method for the preparation of high purity metals with minimum contamination from the container material or the cover gas.

Stress waves generated in thin metallic films by a Q-switched ruby laser

Investigation results on stress waves generated by Q-switched ruby laser irradiated thin metal films under confinement, studied over a wide range of film materials and film thicknesses, are reviewed. The results indicate that the dependence on these parameters is much weaker than is predicted by heat transfer estimations commonly used to describe the interaction of laser irradiation with unconfined bulk-solid surfaces.

Laboratory Simulation of Space Weathering: ESR Measurements of Nanophase Metallic Iron in Laser-irradiated Olivine and Pyroxene Samples

S-type asteroids are believed to be parent bodies of ordinary chondrites. Although both S-type asteroids and ordinary chondrites contain the same mineral assemblage, mainly olivine and pyroxene, the reflectance spectra of the asteroids exhibit more overall depletion (darkening) and reddening, and more weakening of absorption bands relative to the meteorites. This spectral mismatch is explained by space weathering process, where high-velocity dust particle impacts should change the optical properties of the uppermost regolith surface of asteroids. In order to simulate the space weathering, we irradiated nanosecond pulse laser beam onto pellet samples of olivine (8.97wt% FeO) and pyroxene (enstatite: 9.88wt% FeO, hypersthene: 16.70wt%). We got spectral changes in our samples similar to that by space weathering on asteroids and confirmed nanophase alpha-metallic iron particles, which were theoretically predicted, not only on olivine but also on pyroxene samples by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Nanophase metallic iron particles were widely scattered throughout the amorphous rims developed along the olivine grains, whereas they were embedded in aggregates of amorphous in enstatite samples. Recently, we also measured laser-irradiated samples by ESR (Electron Spin Resonance). Strong ESR signals, characteristic to nanophase iron particles, are observed on irradiated olivine samples. In this paper, we report the quantities of nanophase metallic iron particles in pyroxene samples by ESR observations in addition to olivine samples.

All-Optical Micro Motors Based on Moving Gratings in Photosensitive Media

An all-optical micromotor with a rotor driven by a traveling wave of surface deformation of a stator being in contact with the rotor is being studied. Instead of an ultrasonic wave produced by an electrically driven piezoelectric actuator as in ultrasonic motors, the wave is a result of a photo-induced surface deformation of a photosensitive material produced by an incident radiation. A thin piezoelectric polymer will deform more easily LiNbO3 or metal when irradiated with light. The type of photosensitive material studied are piezoelectric polymers with and without coatings for connecting electrodes. In order to be considered as a possible candidate for micromotors, the material should exhibit surface deformation produced by a laser beam of the order of 10 microns. This is compared to the deformations produced by static holographic gratings studied in photorefractive crystals of LiNbO3 using high vertical resolution surface profilometer Dektak 3 and surface interferometer WYKO. An experimental setup showing the oscillations has been developed. The setup uses a chopped beam from an Argon ion laser to produce the deformation while a probe beam is reflected by the thin film into a fiber which is then detected on an oscilloscope. A ramp voltage signal generator will drive the piezoelectric film in another experiment to determine the resonance of the film. A current is generated when light is incident upon the film and this current can be measured. The reverse process has already been demonstrated in other piezoelectric actuators. Changing voltage, polarity, and frequency of the signal can easily generate vibrations similar to those when light is incident on the film. This can be compared to the effects of laser interaction with light absorbing fluids such as solutions of 2,9,16,23-Tetrakis(phenylthio)-29H, 31 H-phthalocyanine in chlorobenzene in capillary tubes, The possibility of using a liquid with the piezoelectric film would be a novel idea for a micromotor since the interaction of a single low power focused laser beam at 633 nm with such fluid produced an intensive circular motion.

Production of metal particles and clusters

The feasibility of producing novel metals or metal clusters in a low gravity environment was studied. The production of coordinately unsaturated metal carbonyls by thermolysis or photolysis of stable metal carbonyls has the potential to generate novel catalysts by this technique. Laser irradiation of available metal carbonyls was investigated. It is found that laser induced decomposition of metal carbonyls is feasible for producing a variety of coordinately unsaturated species. Formation of clustered species does occur but is hampered by weak metal-metal bonds.

Spectra of plages on the sun and stars. I - Ca II H and K lines. II - The H I H-alpha line

Spectra of solar plages are used to define indices of plage properties in the Ca II H and K line region. Chromospheric and photospheric emission is examined and the details of height structure are noted. It is found that: (1) all spectral lines are weakened in plages except those of H I, He I, and some ionized metals; (2) the irradiation contribution from a plage is roughly constant throughout its disk passage; and (3) plage emission distorts spectral and photometric measures of stellar gravity, metallicity, and temperature.

Prediction of the thermal environment and thermal response of simple panels exposed to radiant heat

A method of predicting the radiant heat flux distribution produced by a bank of tubular quartz heaters was applied to a radiant system consisting of a single unreflected lamp irradiating a flat metallic incident surface. In this manner, the method was experimentally verified for various radiant system parameter settings and used as a source of input for a finite element thermal analysis. Two finite element thermal analyses were applied to a thermal system consisting of a thin metallic panel exposed to radiant surface heating. A two-dimensional steady-state finite element thermal analysis algorithm, based on Galerkin's Method of Weighted Residuals (GFE), was formulated specifically for this problem and was used in comparison to the thermal analyzers of the Engineering Analysis Language (EAL). Both analyses allow conduction, convection, and radiation boundary conditions. Differences in the respective finite element formulation are discussed in terms of their accuracy and resulting comparison discrepancies. The thermal analyses are shown to perform well for the comparisons presented here with some important precautions about the various boundary condition models. A description of the experiment, corresponding analytical modeling, and resulting comparisons are presented.

Modification of primordial ices by cosmic rays as simulated by cyclotron irradiation

Frozen CH4 and CH4/Ar mixtures closed into metal cuvettes and open to the vacuum were irradiated at 15 and 77 K with 10 - 20 MeV p and He-3(2+) ions in order to simulate the effect of cosmic rays on solid organic matter in space. Ices exposed to vacuum represent surfaces of icy systems whereas closed systems stand for bulk ices. The products were analyzed by MS, SEM, RBS, ERDA, H-1-NMR, HPLC, GC-MS, NEXAFS, and FT-IR. Volatile products consisted of a mixture of low molecular species, e.g., C2H2, C2H4, C2H6, and long linear aliphatic and olefinic compounds. The formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH's) and related species in solid CH4 is due to a multi-center reaction within one collision cascade and is governed by energy density effects with critical linear energy transfer values L(sub T) between 2 and 10 keV/micron. Open ices exhibit preferential hydrogen release resulting in an increased carbonization as compared to more hydrogen rich molecules protected inside large icy bodies.
