Comparative evolution of the inverse problems (Introduction to an interdisciplinary study of the inverse problems)

The progressive realization of the consequences of nonuniqueness imply an evolution of both the methods and the centers of interest in inverse problems. This evolution is schematically described together with the various mathematical methods used. A comparative description is given of inverse methods in scientific research, with examples taken from mathematics, quantum and classical physics, seismology, transport theory, radiative transfer, electromagnetic scattering, electrocardiology, etc. It is hoped that this paper will pave the way for an interdisciplinary study of inverse problems.

Interdisciplinary Studies of a Marine Microbial Mat Ecosystem, Baja California, Mexico

Cyanobacterial mats in extensive seawater evaporation ponds at Guerrero Negro, Baja California, Mexico, have been excellent subjects for interdisciplinary research. Exportadora de Sal, S.A. (ESSA) has maintained this solar saltern since the 1950s. The following entities provided research support: NASA Exobiology (1984-1988), Precambrian Paleobiology Research Group (1986-1993), NAI (1998-2010), and Exobiology (2010-2016). This summary emphasizes research that was supported by the NAI and conducted by its teams.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration interdisciplinary studies in space technology at the University of Kansas

A broad range of research projects contained in a cooperative space technology program at the University of Kansas are reported as they relate to the following three areas of interdisciplinary interest: (1) remote sensing of earth resources; (2) stability and control of light and general aviation aircraft; and (3) the vibrational response characteristics of aeronautical and space vehicles. Details of specific research efforts are given under their appropriate departments, among which are aerospace engineering, chemical and petroleum engineering, environmental health, water resources, the remote sensing laboratory, and geoscience applications studies.

Project management in the Apollo program: An interdisciplinary study

Findings concerning project management in the NASA Apollo program are presented. The Apollo program in the context of the total NASA organization is examined along with the nature of project management and the manner in which project managers functioned in the Apollo program. The utilization of the in-house technical competence in the support of the Apollo program, and the formal and informal relationships between Apollo managers and the contractors are discussed.

An interdisciplinary study of the estuarine and coastal oceanography of Block Island Sound and adjacent New York coastal waters

The author has identified the following significant results. The synoptic repetitive coverage of the multispectral imagery from the ERTS-1 satellite, when photographically reprocessed using the state-of-the-art techniques, has given indication of spectral differences in Block Island and adjacent New England waters which were heretofore unknown. Of particular interest was the possible detection of relatively small amounts of phytoplankton prior to the occurrence of the red tide in Massachusetts waters. Preparation of spatial and temporal hydrographic charts using ERTS-1 imagery and ground truth analysis will hopefully determine the environmental impact on New York coastal waters.

An interdisciplinary study of the estaurine and coastal oceanography of Block Island Sound and adjacent New York coastal waters

ERTS-1 photographic data products have been analyzed using additive color viewing and electronic image analysis techniques. Satellite data were compared to water sample data collected simultaneously with the data of ERTS-1 coverage in New York Bight. Prediction of the absolute value of total suspended particles can be made using composites of positives of MSS bands 5 and 6 which have been precisely made using the step wedge supplied on the imagery. Predictions of the relative value of the extinction coefficient can be made using bands 4 and 5. Thematic charts of total suspended particles (particles per litre) and extinction coefficient provide scientists conducting state and federal water sampling programs in New York Bight with data which improves the performance of these programs.

Interdisciplinary studies on the development of nuclear-fueled circulatory support systems: Collaboration of industry and academe

The purpose of this report is to acquaint the Houston community with specific areas of available technology, both public and private, to demonstrate to industry how this technology may be acquired and put to use to provide new and useful services for man. Much of the technology utilized in the development of nuclear-fueled circulatory support systems in our laboratories has evolved from industry, NASA, and AEC; our projects involve radiation biology, thermodynamics, energy transfers, hemodynamics, hematology, pathology, and surgery.

Interdisciplinary study of atmospheric processes and constituents of the mid-Atlantic coastal region.

Past research projects for the year 1974-1975 are listed along with future research programs in the area of air pollution control, remote sensor analysis of smoke plumes, the biosphere component, and field experiments. A detailed budget analysis is presented. Attachments are included on the following topics: mapping forest vegetation with ERTS-1 MSS data and automatic data processing techniques, and use of LARS system for the quantitative determination of smoke plume lateral diffusion coefficients from ERTS images of Virginia.
