Staged progression epidemic models for the transmission of invasive nontyphoidal Salmonella (iNTS) with treatment

We develop and analyze a stage-progression compartmental model to study the emerging invasive nontyphoidal Salmonella (iNTS) epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa. iNTS bloodstream infections are often fatal, and the diverse and non-specific clinical features of iNTS make it difficult to diagnose. We focus our study on identifying approaches that can reduce the incidence of new infections. In sub-Saharan Africa, transmission and mortality are correlated with the ongoing HIV epidemic and severe malnutrition. We use our model to quantify the impact that increasing antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV infected adults and reducing malnutrition in children would have on mortality from iNTS in the population. We consider immunocompromised subpopulations in the region with major risk factors for mortality, such as malaria and malnutrition among children and HIV infection and ART coverage in both children and adults. We parameterize the progression rates between infection stages using the branching probabilities and estimated time spent at each stage. We interpret the basic reproduction number R 0 as the total contribution from an infinite infection loop produced by the asymptomatic carriers in the infection chain. The results indicate that the asymptomatic HIV+ adults without ART serve as the driving force of infection for the iNTS epidemic. We conclude that the worst disease outcome is among the pediatric population, which has the highest infection rates and death counts. Our sensitivity analysis indicates that the most effective strategies to reduce iNTS mortality in the studied population are to improve the ART coverage among high-risk HIV+ adults and reduce malnutrition among children.

Materials Data on InTe by Materials Project

InTe is I4/mcm structured and crystallizes in the tetragonal I4/mcm space group. The structure is three-dimensional. there are two inequivalent In2+ sites. In the first In2+ site, In2+ is bonded in a 8-coordinate geometry to eight equivalent Te2- atoms. All In–Te bond lengths are 3.64 Å. In the second In2+ site, In2+ is bonded to four equivalent Te2- atoms to form edge-sharing InTe4 tetrahedra. All In–Te bond lengths are 2.86 Å. Te2- is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to six In2+ atoms.

Unconventional magnetotransport and antiferromagnetic order in Eu 2 ⁢InTe 5

Here, we report on the structural characterization and physical properties of Eu 2 ⁢InTe 5 , a distorted square-net motif antiferromagnetic semiconductor. Single crystal x-ray diffraction measurements reveal a distortion of the Te square-net layers such that an orthorhombic supercell is necessary to accurately describe the structure. Magnetization, resistivity, and specific heat measurements confirm antiferromagnetic ordering at 𝑇 𝑁 = 7.3K. Anisotropy in magnetization data suggests the magnetic moments are oriented parallel to the 𝑐 axis. We observe an unconventional transverse magnetoresistance and Hall resistivity in the paramagnetic state (𝑇 ≤ 80K), indicating strong coupling between localized Eu 2+ magnetic moments and conduction electrons. Resistivity and Hall measurements indicate the material is a heavily doped semiconductor, with impurity states related to disorder. Our findings highlight a relatively unexplored Eu-based antiferromagnetic semiconductor with unconventional magnetotransport behavior.

Multi-INT Signature Collection and Exploitation for Security Los Alamos LDRD Report

This project demonstrates the feasibility of a 2-D passive tracking capability for ground-based and airborne moving sources using multi-INT signal processing of acoustic and seismic signals. We leveraged the recent DDSTE-supported investment in rapid deployable sensors (the Los Alamos Rapid-deployable Sensor Array—LARSA), and used uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAV) as a data source. Moving source types are characterized by their variability with time (exemplified but not limited to the Doppler shift of a passing vehicle) and the signatures used for detection should have similar characteristics. We have demonstrated that time-varying sensor signatures (TVS) combined with time-stable sensor signatures provide a more complete understanding of moving source behavior and drive towards path prediction. Importantly, we have collected a new, relevant LANL dataset of moving sources (small UAV flights and vehicle movement), developed new signatures, and demonstrated a capability to identify, track and forecast the position of TVS.

V-INT: Automated Vulnerability Intelligence and Risk Assessment

The project team, including the University of Arkansas (UA) as the lead, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR), Network Perception (NP), and Bastazo, has successfully researched, developed, and demonstrated the V-INT toolset, and also integrated it into the commercial products of NP (i.e., NP-View) and Bastazo (i.e., Spartan). The end product is a cybersecurity software tool for energy utilities that can automatically assess the risks of software vulnerabilities in an organization’s assets considering the organization’s firewall policies. It allows security operators to identify the small portion of vulnerabilities that poses true threats to their system (i.e., those that are not protected by firewall policies) and prioritize the mitigation of these vulnerabilities to minimize risks. It also allows security operators to identify the vulnerability-induced attack paths under their organization’s firewall policy, providing effective decision supports for mitigating potential attacks.

Back Cover: Influence of Intracrystalline Ionic Strength in MFI Zeolites on Aqueous Phase Dehydration of Methylcyclohexanols (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 47/2021)

Here the impact of the concentration of hydrated hydronium ions and in turn of the local ionic strength in MFI zeolites has been investigated for the aqueous phase dehydration of 4-methylcyclohexanol (E1 mechanism) and cis-2-methylcyclohexanol (E2 mechanism). The E2 pathway with the latter alcohol led to a 2.5-fold higher activity. The catalytic activity normalized to the hydronium ions (turnover frequency, TOF) passed through a pronounced maximum, which is attributed to the increasing excess chemical potential of the alcohols in the pores, increasing in parallel with the ionic strength and the additional work caused by repulsive interactions and charge separation induced by the bulky alcohols. While the maximum in rate observed is invariant with the mechanism or substitution, the reaction pathway is influencing the activation parameters differently.
