Materials Data on InNi by Materials Project

NiIn crystallizes in the hexagonal P6/mmm space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Ni is bonded in a 10-coordinate geometry to four equivalent Ni and six In atoms. All Ni–Ni bond lengths are 2.64 Å. There are two shorter (2.64 Å) and four longer (2.66 Å) Ni–In bond lengths. There are two inequivalent In sites. In the first In site, In is bonded in a hexagonal planar geometry to six equivalent Ni atoms. In the second In site, In is bonded in a 9-coordinate geometry to six equivalent Ni atoms.

Confined Ni-In intermetallic alloy nanocatalyst with excellent coking resistance for methane dry reforming

Carbon dioxide and methane are two main greenhouse gases which are contributed to serious global warming. Fortunately, dry reforming of methane (DRM), a very important reaction developed decades ago, can convert these two major greenhouse gases into value-added syngas or hydrogen. The main problem retarding its industrialization is the seriously coking formation upon the nickel-based catalysts. Herein, a series of confined indium-nickel (In-Ni) intermetallic alloy nanocatalysts (In x Ni@SiO 2 ) have been prepared and displayed superior coking resistance for DRM reaction. The sample containing 0.5 wt.% of In loading (In 0.5 Ni@SiO 2 ) shows the best balance of carbon deposition resistance and DRM reactivity even after 430 h long term stability test. The boosted carbon resistance can be ascribed to the confinement of core–shell structure and to the transfer of electrons from Indium to Nickel in In-Ni intermetallic alloys due to the smaller electronegativity of In. Additionally, both the silica shell and the increase of electron cloud density on metallic Ni can weaken the ability of Ni to activate C–H bond and decrease the deep cracking process of methane. The reaction over the confined InNi intermetallic alloy nanocatalyst was conformed to the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism revealed by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in-situ DRIFTS). This work provides a guidance to design high performance coking resistance catalysts for methane dry reforming to efficiently utilize these two main greenhouse gases.

Sparsomycin inhibits translation through a conserved mechanism across all domains of life

Abstract Sparsomycin (SPA) is a broad-spectrum inhibitor of protein synthesis with activity across all three domains of life. Although SPA has long been known to target the ribosomal peptidyl transferase center (PTC), previous structural studies suggested that SPA binds differently to bacterial ribosomes compared to their archaeal and eukaryotic counterparts—an unexpected conclusion given the high evolutionary conservation of the ribosomal catalytic center. Here, we show that SPA inhibits a majority of elongation-competent bacterial ribosomal complexes and present X-ray crystal structures of Thermus thermophilus 70S ribosomes stalled by SPA at the initiation and early elongation stages of translation. These structures reveal that SPA binds to the bacterial ribosome in a manner essentially identical to that observed in archaeal and eukaryotic ribosomes, establishing a unified structural mechanism of SPA action across all domains of life. In this conserved binding mode, SPA occupies the A-site cleft of the PTC and forms an extensive network of interactions with universally conserved ribosomal RNA nucleotides and the CCA-end of the P-site transfer RNA (tRNA), thereby stabilizing the peptidyl-tRNA substrate while sterically blocking accommodation of an incoming aminoacyl-tRNA. By clarifying the mode of action of SPA on the bacterial ribosome, our work provides a structural framework for the rational design of SPA derivatives with improved potency and bacterial specificity.

Crystal Growth, Optical and Scintillation Properties of Eu 2+ -doped TlSr 2 Br 5

Crystals of undoped and Eu 2+ -doped TlSr 2 Br 5 of up to 16 mm in diameter and 50 mm in length were grown by the Vertical Bridgman technique. TlSr 2 Br 5 has the monoclinic crystal structure with space group P21/c. Its density and Z eff are 5.03 g/cm 3 and 58.6, respectively. Radioluminescence spectra of undoped and Eu 2+ -doped TlSr 2 Br 5 feature a broad emission band peaking at about 440 nm for undoped and 520 nm for Eu 2+ -doped crystals. The light yield of undoped TlSr 2 Br 5 is 42,000 ph/MeV, which increases to 55,000 ph/MeV for Eu 2+ -doped crystals. The energy resolution at 662 keV ( 137 Cs) is about 5 – 6% (FWHM). As a result, the scintillation decay of undoped and Eu 2+ -doped TlSr 2 Br 5 is of the order of 100s of nanoseconds.
