Driven Majorana modes: A route to synthetic $p_x +ip_y$ superconductivity

We propose a protocol to realize synthetic $p_x +ip_y$ superconductors in one-dimensional topological systems that host Majorana fermions. By periodically driving a localized Majorana mode across the system, our protocol realizes a topological pumping of Majorana fermions, analogous to the adiabatic Thouless pumping of electrical charges. Importantly, similar to the realization of a Chern insulator through Thouless pumping, we show that pumping of Majorana zero modes could lead to a $p_x +ip_y$ superconductor in the two dimensions of space and synthetic time. The Floquet theory is employed to map the driven one-dimensional system to a two-dimensional synthetic system by considering frequency as a new dimension. We demonstrate such Floquet $p_x +ip_y$ superconductors using the Kitaev $p$-wave superconductor chain, a prototypical 1D topological system, as well as its more realistic realization in the 1D Kondo lattice model as examples. We further show the appearance of Majorana $π$ mode at the Floquet zone boundary in an intermediate drive frequency region. Our work suggests a driven magnetic spiral coupled to a superconductor as a promising platform for the realization of novel topological superconductors.

IPS activity observed as a precursor of solar induced terrestrial activity

A radio telescope designed to exploit the interplanetary scintillation (IPS) technique and locate, map, and track solar wind disturbances which result in geomagnetic disturbances, thereby providing a forecast capability, is described. Preliminary results from operation of the telescope include: (1) evidence for a precursor signal in the IPS activity with a 1-2 day lead time with respect to density enhancements which frequently give rise to geomagnetic activity; (2) detection of a spectral broadening signature which also serves as a precursor of geomagnetic activity; (3) out-of-the-ecliptic plasma density enhancements which were not detected by near-Earth, ecliptic plane spacecraft; (4) detection of 12 corotating density enhancements;(5) detection of over 80 sources which give detectable scintillation of which 45 have been used for detailed synoptic analysis and 9 for spectral analysis; and (6) measurement of 0-lag coefficient of 0.56 between density and IPS activity enhancements.

The velocity and the density spectrum of the solar wind from simultaneous three-frequency IPS observations

Density inhomogeneities in the solar wind cause fluctuations regarding the emission of small diameter radio sources. Such fluctuations are called interplanetary scintillation (IPS). IPS has been studied to obtain information on both the solar wind and on the radio sources. In the present investigation it is attempted to extract information about the solar wind from simultaneous IPS observations at three radio frequencies and a single antenna. Data were recorded at frequencies of 270 MHz, 340 MHz, and 470 MHz on a 91 m telescope. Five different radio sources were observed. The observations are compared with theoretical predictions for spectra, cross-spectra, and cross-correlations using weak scattering theory and various models for the wavenumber spectrum of density inhomogeneities in the solar wind. Good fits are obtained over the observed wavenumbers to a spectrum modeled as a power law.

Actuator development for the Instrument Pointing System (IPS)

The mechanisms of the instrument pointing system (IPS) are described. Particular emphasis is placed on the actuators which are necessary for operating the IPS. The actuators are described as follows: (1) two linear actuators that clamp the gimbals down during ascent and descent; (2) two linear actuators that attach the payload to the IPS during the mission, and release it into the payload clamps; (3) one rotational actuator that opens and closes the payload clamps; and (4) three identical drive units that represent the three orthogonal gimbal axes and are the prime movers for pointing. Design features, manufacturing problems, test performance, and results are presented.

IPS guidestar selection for stellar mode (ASTRO)

This report describes how guide stars are selected for the Optical Sensor Package (OSP) for the Instrument Pointing System (IPS) when it is operating in the stellar mode on the ASTRO missions. It also describes how the objective loads are written and how the various roll angles are related; i.e., the celestial roll or position angle, the objective load roll angles, and the IPS gimbal angles. There is a brief description of how the IPS operates and its various modes of operation; i.e., IDOP, IDIN, and OSPCAL.

Time-resolved IUE studies of cataclysmic variables. I - Eclipsing systems IP Peg, PG 1030+590, and V1315 Aql

IUE time-resolved spectra of the high-inclination cataclysmic variables IP Peg, PG 1030+590, and V1315 Aql are analyzed in order to determine the characteristics of the disk, hotspots, and white dwarfs. The UV continuum flux distributions are generally flatter than systems of low inclination and high mass-transfer rate, and the white dwarfs/inner disk appear to be relatively cool (15,000-19,000 K) for their orbital periods, possibly because the boundary layers are blocked from view. The continuum fluxes increase at spot phases, with the spot providing the dominant flux in IP Peg. The spot temperatures range from hot (20,000 K) in IP Peg, and perhaps in PG 1030+590, to cool (11,000 K) in V1315 Aql. The C IV emission lines show slightly larger decreases at spot phases than during eclipse, which implies an extended stream area.

The Spacelab IPS Star Simulator

The cost of doing business in space is very high. If errors occur while in orbit the costs grow and desired scientific data may be corrupted or even lost. The Spacelab Instrument Pointing System (IPS) Star Simulator is a unique test bed that allows star trackers to interface with simulated stars in a laboratory before going into orbit. This hardware-in-the-loop testing of equipment on earth increases the probability of success while in space. The IPS Star Simulator provides three fields of view 2.55 x 2.55 deg each for input into star trackers. The fields of view are produced on three separate monitors. Each monitor has 4096 x 4096 addressable points and can display 50 stars (pixels) maximum at a given time. The pixel refresh rate is 1000 Hz. The spectral output is approximately 550 nm. The available relative visual magnitude range is two to eight visual magnitudes. The star size is less than 100 arcsec. The minimum star movement is less than 5 arcsec and the relative position accuracy is approximately 40 arcsec. The purpose of this paper is to describe the IPS Star Simulator design and to provide an operational scenario so others may gain from the approach and possible use of the system.

Digital controller design: Continuous and discrete describing function analysis of the IPS system

The dynamic equations and the mathematical model of the continuous-data IPS control system are developed. The IPS model considered included one flexible body mode and was hardmounted to the Orbiter/Pallet. The model contains equations describing a torque feed-forward loop (using accelerometers as inputs) which will aid in reducing the pointing errors caused by Orbiter disturbances.

A simulation of the IPS variations from a magnetohydrodynamical simulation

Calculations of the variations of interplanetary scintillation (IPS) from a disturbance simulated by a 3-D magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) model of the solar wind are presented. The simulated maps are compared with observations and it is found that the MHD model reproduces the qualitative features of observed disturbances. The disturbance produced by the MHD simulation is found to correspond in strength with the weakest disturbance which can be reliably detected by existing single station IPS observations.

eCounter: Inline Per-IP Network Monitoring at Millisecond Resolution via eBPF

Scientific data acquisition (SciDAQ) systems are shifting from archive-based workflows to streaming paradigms, where real-time, fine-grained network monitoring becomes essential. While P4-enabled devices offer per-packet in-band observability, they require specialized switches and routers. Host-side tools like Prometheus exporters lack sufficient temporal granularity. To bridge this gap, we present eCounter, a lightweight, hardware-agnostic, inline telemetry agent built on extended Berkeley Packet Filter (eBPF). eCounter captures per-interface ingress and egress traffic, categorized by IP address and protocol, at millisecond to sub-millisecond resolution. In a 100 Gbps environment, it continuously exports up to 3,257 time-series bins per second with only 4% CPU utilization at a 35¿KiB/s data rate. We evaluate eCounter across diverse NIC MTU settings, hook types, CPU architectures and operating systems, and observed negligible impact on concurrent high-throughput streaming applications. Complexity analysis confirms that it can be readily scaled to distributed SciDAQ deployments.

Research study on IPS digital controller design

The performance is investigated of the simplified continuous-data model of the Instrument Pointing System (IPS). Although the ultimate objective is to study the digital model of the system, knowledge on the performance of the continuous-data model is important in the sense that the characteristics of the digital system should approach those of the continuous-data system as the sampling period approaches zero.

Digital controller design: Continuous and discrete describing function analysis of the IPS system

The digital IPS with wire cable and flex pivot nonlinearity is simulated on the digital computer to determine the effects of varying the sampling period T on the system stability, and to determine a range of optimal values of the parameters of the digital controller. The listing of the computer program is shown as well as the Dahl model for the flex pivot nonlinearity. For the wire cable nonlinearity, two ranges of values were used and the nominal values of the digital controller parameters are included.

The design, fabrication and delivery of a spacelab neutral buoyancy Instrument Pointing System (IPS) mockup

Underwater simulations of EVA contingency operations such as manual jettison, payload disconnect, and payload clamp actuation were used to define crew aid needs and mockup pecularities and characteristics to verify the validity of simulation using the trainer. A set of mockup instrument pointing system tests was conducted and minor modifications and refinements were made. Flight configuration struts were tested and verified to be operable by the flight crew. Tasks involved in developing the following end items are described: IPS gimbal system, payload, and payload clamp assembly; the igloos (volumetric); spacelab pallets, experiments, and hardware; experiment, and hardware; experiment 7; and EVA hand tools, support hardware (handrails and foot restraints). The test plan preparation and test support are also covered.

Expected IPS variations due to a disturbance described by a 3-D MHD model

The variations of interplanetary scintillation due to a disturbance described by a three-dimensional, time-dependent, MHD model of the interplanetary medium are calculated. The resulting simulated IPS maps are compared with observations of real disturbances and it is found that there is some qualitative agreement. It is concluded that the MHD model with a more realistic choice of input conditions would probably provide a useful description of many interplanetary disturbances.

Rescue of Unique Liquid IP-2 Portable Tanks at Savannah River Site – 25078

Westinghouse Savannah River Company, the SRS Management and Operations Contractor at the time, procured six large IP-2 portable tanks capable of transporting liquids in 2003 to support the layup of the F Canyon at SRS. F Canyon was one of two full-scale hardened radiochemical separations facilities built at SRS in the 1950s as part of the initial construction of the Site. F Canyon and H Canyon provided actinide separations capabilities for SRS through the end of the Cold War. Following the end of the Cold War era, the decision was eventually made that only one of these radiochemical separations facilities at SRS would still be needed moving forward. As H Canyon was considered better suited for ongoing SRS missions, F Canyon was placed into a layup state in the first decade of the 21st Century, with F Area deactivation completing in 2006. This process resulted in the creation of excess, radioactively contaminated solutions, which required disposition. These solutions included contaminated organic solutions as well as DU-bearing aqueous solutions. The six portable tanks were procured to support the transportation of these solutions.
