U.S. Research Impact Alliance IMPACT Accelerator

The U.S. Research Impact Alliance (USRIA) was created with a vision to leverage successful models that accelerate technology development and commercialization, and support startup businesses based upon federal research investments. Building upon lessons learned and feedback from cohort teams, the USRIA programs have morphed into customized solutions that offer services which provide the most impact to startup businesses. Based upon discussions with small and startup businesses, entrepreneurs, and technology developers, a variety of resources have been developed to support each of these target audiences. USRIA created program differentiators to offer one-on-one engagement and direct communication with cohort teams, highly relevant conversations with targeted introductions, and minimal “class” time (only used when an issue is applicable to all cohort members).

From IMPEL to Impact: Lessons Learned in Accelerating Innovative Building Technologies

The built environment is a complex ecosystem of social institutions and physical infrastructures. Innovation and entrepreneurship in the building industry are critical levers for market transformation toward equitable climate action. However, climate tech innovation for the built environment is not moving fast enough for global needs, and it lacks fundamental diversity, leading to inequitable outcomes. IMPEL (Incubating Market-propelled Entrepreneurial-mindset at the Labs and Beyond) - a U.S. Department of Energy incubator–addresses these critical issues. Over five years, IMPEL has enabled 250 innovators, including 55% women and diverse founders, to accelerate their buildings and clean energy technologies towards market and climate impact. IMPEL provides access to strategic mentoring and coaching, carbon tools training, testbeds, and powerful public-private pipelines, including industry demonstrations, non-dilutive grants, and venture capital networks. The IMPEL innovation ecosystem has accelerated the pace of innovation and market adoption of building decarbonization technologies. In this paper, leverage the IMPEL stakeholder ecosystem - from innovators to investors and product industry to policymakers - to analyze the critical barriers to decarbonization still encountered in the building industry. We study the IMPEL approach and highlight lessons learned that benefit young businesses pursuing innovative building and building-edge energy technologies to develop new ideas and products. Finally, we propose a ‘market forming’ framework to improve the quality and efficiency of the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the building industry. A Grassroots Network and Community Roadmap for Interconnected Autonomous Science Laboratories for Accelerated Discovery

Scientific discovery is being revolutionized by AI and autonomous systems, yet current autonomous laboratories remain isolated islands unable to collaborate across institutions. We present the Autonomous Interconnected Science Lab Ecosystem (AISLE), a grassroots network transforming fragmented capabilities into a unified system that shorten the path from ideation to innovation to impact and accelerates discovery from decades to months. AISLE addresses five critical dimensions: (1) cross-institutional equipment orchestration, (2) intelligent data management with FAIR compliance, (3) AI-agent driven orchestration grounded in scientific principles, (4) interoperable agent communication interfaces, and (5) AI/ML-integrated scientific education. By connecting autonomous agents across institutional boundaries, autonomous science can unlock research spaces inaccessible to traditional approaches while democratizing cutting-edge technologies. This paradigm shift toward collaborative autonomous science promises breakthroughs in sustainable energy, materials development, and public health.

Role of Accelerated Burnup Irradiation Testing in Support of Accelerated Fuel Qualification

Accelerated fuel qualification has gained attention as a means to reduce the time needed to realize new nuclear fuel concepts and expand the operating windows of existing fuel forms. A key component of this approach is accelerated burnup irradiation testing. Although the concept of accelerated burnup has been familiar to the community for many decades, the specifics about how the increasing fission rate may be used as a qualification tool have not yet been elucidated. The present work provides a vision of how accelerated fission rate testing can enable accelerated fuel qualification. Technology readiness levels (TRLs) are reintroduced to demarcate the stages of traditional fuel qualification, and accelerated fuel qualification is presented in this context. The critical steps needed to achieve each TRL are reframed within the context of modern nuclear materials research and development, as revolutionary fuel concepts are more common than previous eras. The practical impacts of accelerated fuel qualification approaches as applied to contemporary fuel qualification efforts are illustrated. Examples are given to illustrate how accelerated burnup irradiations are being used currently and could be applied in the future to support qualification and licensure. Finally, outstanding challenges in the application of accelerated burnup methods to nuclear fuel qualification are summarized, with priority placed on understanding how fission rate impacts diffusion, microstructure evolution, and other critical mechanisms that dictate fuel performance.

A modeling study of ocean thermal energy conversion resource and potential environmental effects around Kailua-Kona, Hawaii

Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) offers a promising renewable energy solution through a heat exchange process using the temperature difference between warm surface seawater and cold deep seawater. Because accurate resource characterization is critical for the optimal design and implementation of OTEC systems, a high-resolution numerical model is employed to better characterize the OTEC resource at Kona, Hawaii. Our model provides detailed spatial and temporal variability of the thermal gradient, which is essential for assessing the viability and efficiency of OTEC systems. The model results reveal distinct patterns and dynamics not captured by existing observations or models (e.g., lower-resolution information). These findings highlight the importance of using high-resolution models for accurate predictions of thermal gradient variability, ultimately supporting more efficient and sustainable OTEC deployment. Additionally, the study investigates the impacts of mixed water discharge from OTEC plants that can cause shock to organisms living in the surface water and potentially destabilize the water column. Understanding these effects is vital for minimizing any potential negative environmental consequences and ensuring the long-term viability of OTEC operations. Further, our model improves OTEC resource characterization, which can lead to optimal design and deployment of OTEC systems. The analysis of OTEC water discharge impacts can accelerate the development of OTEC technologies, overcoming permitting/consenting challenges. These findings contribute to the broader adoption of high-resolution modeling in ocean energy resource characterization, particularly for OTEC applications.

NEML2: An efficient and modular multiphysics constitutive modeling library for hybrid computing environments

This paper presents NEML2, an open-source, high-performance library developed for constitutive material modeling, designed to support the flexible and modular development of models for complex material behavior. Building on the foundational structure of its predecessor, NEML, the NEML2 library introduces significant improvements, including enhanced vectorization, automatic differentiation, and seamless integration with PyTorch, facilitating the application of machine learning techniques in material simulations. NEML2 provides a C++ backend with Python bindings, enabling users to create custom material models that can be executed efficiently on both CPU and GPU platforms. The library also supports coupling with Multiphysics simulation frameworks like MOOSE, making it suitable for realistic simulations involving coupled physical processes. Rigorous quality assurance through unit and regression testing ensures the reliability of results, while the extensible, user-friendly design encourages collaboration and reproducibility across the scientific community. This paper provides an overview of NEML2’s architecture, core features, and applications, highlighting its impact on accelerating material qualification and advancing computational methods in materials science.

Searching for the Most Harmful Field Errors in the HSR IR Superconducting Magnets

In this project, we improve beam stability for the Electron-Ion Collider. Magnetic field errors can reduce beam stability, making it essential to identify the field errors that have the greatest impact on accelerator performance. However, this is particularly challenging because beam stability depends on the complex interactions of many magnetic field errors, resulting in a high-dimensional and nonlinear optimization problem. We determine which field errors are the most influential for the large physical aperture superconducting magnet B2PF, a critical magnet in the Interaction Region (IR) in the Hadron Storage Ring (HSR). We complete and analyze nearly 30,000 simulations on the Brookhaven National Laboratory Linux Cluster by varying 18 nonlinear magnetic field errors. We evaluate beam stability using the dynamic aperture and the tune diffusion. We identify the field errors that most strongly influence beam stability and establish quantitative field error tolerances that improve accelerator performance.

IMPACT-01 Assembly Overview [Slides]

The Irradiated Material Properties Accelerated Characterization Test (IMPACT) series of experiments will irradiate three metallic fuel alloy specimens with embedded thermal conductivity probes in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR). Metallic fuel alloys have long been under investigation for use in advanced reactors on account of their high thermal conductivity. Metallic fuel undergoes dramatic microstructural changes early in life due to fission gas swelling until ~2-3 at% burnup when pores interconnect, thus allowing fission gas to escape into the fuel pin plenum and swelling effectively ceases. The evolution of metallic fuel thermal conductivity during this early phase has never been successfully measured in situ. This experiment will be designed to use advances in measurement sciences to characterize how thermal transport properties evolve while in reactor. The IMPACT experiment consists of three metallic fuel rodlets with thermal conductivity probes axially centered within the fuel specimen. This presentation is an overview of the IMPACT-01 assembly process with a focus MFC fuel fabrication and experiment assembly steps.

Overview of IMPACT Data Acquisition System and Data Reduction Process

This report documents the development of the data acquisition system (DAS) and data reduction methodologies for the Irradiated Material Property Accelerated Characterization Test (IMPACT) experiment at the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR). The IMPACT experiment is designed to enable in-pile measurement of thermal conductivity in metallic nuclear fuels, specifically U-10Zr, using an instrumented thermal conductivity probe. The DAS supports both passive temperature monitoring and active thermal interrogation of the probe through controlled AC and DC excitation. Significant modifications to laboratory-scale systems were required to accommodate the higher resistance paths associated with the in-pile application. Custom electronics and relay-controlled measurement sequencing were developed to enable the measurement and sufficient power delivery to the sensing region. A reduced-order, axisymmetric thermal model based on the thermal quadrupoles method is presented to support data interpretation. This model enables efficient evaluation of transient heat transfer behavior and facilitates solution of the inverse problem required to extract thermal properties from measured signals. Multiple boundary condition formulations are discussed to address varying experimental time scales and geometries. Additionally, machine learning techniques are introduced to support data reduction and improve confidence in inverse solutions. Convolutional neural networks are applied to identify the presence of gas gaps and other evolving geometric features that significantly impact thermal response during irradiation. These efforts contribute to the broader integration of digital twin frameworks and real-time modeling capabilities within the Advanced Fuels Campaign.

Accelerating Surface Radiation Content to Investigate the Impact of Radon Progeny on Superconducting Qubits

Ionizing radiation in the form of $α$, $β$, $γ$, and additional high-energy particles can induce decoherence via phonon and quasiparticle poisoning in superconducting qubits. Recent studies have explored this effect using cosmic rays or controlled radioactive sources held in the proximity of a qubit package, and have concluded that reductions in such ``external'' environmental radiation may benefit stable operation of qubit devices. However, the effect of long-lived, unstable daughters of $^{222}$Rn that ``plate out'' directly on device and packaging surfaces has not been as extensively explored. This plate-out process, well-known to the dark matter direct detection field, occurs throughout the fabrication and testing lifecycle of a device and (separately) its packaging, and produces a local source of $α$-decays which can remain active for decades. As this scales with chip area, understanding and managing this source of ionizing radiation is relevant for successfully scaling quantum computing architectures to larger numbers of qubits in a radiation-robust way. We present a setup capable of accelerating and enhancing radon daughter plateout by a factor of $7\times10^4$ over ambient, in order to study, \textit{in situ}, the impact of these events on superconducting qubits. We also provide outlook on the potential impact of this source of ionizing radiation on current and future qubit arrays.

Fall SULI Report

This fall, I interned under Fan Guo and Xiaocan Li in T-2 at Los Alamos National Laboratory through the SULI program. I investigated how shock thickness is impacted by collisions between particles in plasmas and how particle acceleration in shocks is impacted by the mass ratio for protons and electrons used in simulations. Both investigations were carried out using the VPIC simulation code. I found that collisions do not meaningfully impact shock width and that higher mass ratios lead to somewhat more electron acceleration in shocks. This write-up is in three parts, the first discussing a description of what I was up to personally throughout the fall, the second discussing the results of the collisional shock study, and the third discussing the results of the high mass ratio shock study.

LAMP Operational Concepts

This brief report describes the major operational changes resulting from accelerator design and implementation of the LAMP scope. Improvements in operational performance are discussed, along with implications for integration with the existing LANSCE accelerator complex. Potential impacts to the present LANSCE operational modes and integration with the existing personnel and machine protection systems are also discussed.

Accelerating room air conditioner efficiency in India: Grid, economic, and policy implications through 2035

India is poised for a rapid surge in space cooling demand, driven by rising incomes, urbanization, and intensifying heat. Between 2025 and 2035, the country is expected to add 130–150 million new room air conditioners (ACs). If Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) continue to improve at the historical rate of 2–3 % annually, room ACs alone could contribute over 180 GW to peak electricity demand by 2035-nearly 30 % of the projected national total. This study evaluates the impact of an accelerated MEPS trajectory, proposing to raise the 1-star threshold to ISEER 5.0 by 2027, ISEER 6.3 by 2030, and ISEER 7.4 by 2033. Drawing on engineering cost analysis, stock turnover modeling, and retail pricing data, we find that this pathway could reduce peak demand by over 60 GW, save 118 TWh of electricity annually, avoid 49 MtCO₂ of electricity-related emissions per year, avert ₹7.5 trillion (∼US$85 billion) in power system investments, and yield ₹0.7–2.3 trillion (∼US$8–26 billion) in net consumer savings by 2035. Contrary to affordability concerns, empirical trends show that higher efficiency does not increase AC prices. These results highlight the value of ambitious MEPS as a cost-effective strategy for improving grid reliability, reducing emissions, and advancing consumer welfare in emerging economies.
