Discrete spherical harmonic functions for texture representation and analysis

A basis of discrete harmonic functions for efficient representation and analysis of crystallographic texture is presented. Discrete harmonics are a numerical representation of the harmonics on the sphere. A finite element formulation is utilized to calculate these orthonormal basis functions, which provides several advantageous features for quantitative texture analysis. These include high-precision numerical integration, a simple implementation of the non-negativity constraint and computational efficiency. Simple examples of pole figure and texture interpolation and of Fourier filtering using these basis sets are presented.

Noise generation by a finite span swept airfoil

An analysis is developed for the noise generated by a convected gust interacting with a single swept airfoil. The airfoil spans a channel with infinite parallel walls which contains a uniform subsonic mean flow. High frequency gusts, for which the noise generation is concentrated at the airfoil leading edge, are considered. The solution utilizes the Wiener-Hopf technique applied to the equations in nonorthogonal coordinates. Closed form expressions for the farfield acoustic pressure are obtained. The convected gust is assumed to be a plane wave, i.e., the lowest order spanwise mode. Because of the swept leading edge, this convected gust generates acoustic modes of all orders. At high frequencies and low Mach numbers, moderate sweep angles produce substantial noise reductions. The residual acoustic energy is carried mainly by the higher modes. The airfoil sweep also modulates the basic high frequency farfield directivity, producing lobed patterns. The angular modulation of the directivity patterns is most pronounced for the lower order modes.

Noise produced by the interaction of a rotor wake with a swept stator blade

An analysis is developed for the noise generated by the interaction of rotor viscous wakes and a single swept stator vane. The stator vane spans a channel with infinite parallel walls which contains a uniform subsonic mean flow. High frequency wakes, for which the noise generation is concentrated at the vane leading edge, are considered. The general wake pattern is expanded in spanwise modes and solutions for each mode are derived using the Wiener-Hopf technique applied to the equations in the nonorthogonal coordinates. Closed form expressions for the acoustic farfield are obtained. The results of the analysis are used in parametric calculations of rotor viscous wake-stator vane interactions in order to study the effectiveness of sweep as a noise reduction mechanism. For the cases studied, moderate stator sweep angles produce sizeable reductions in the level of the farfield noise. The presence of rotor wake circumferential lean actually increases the noise reduction produced by moderate stator sweep angles.

Heat and Momentum Transfer Studies in High Reynolds Number Wavy Films at Normal and Reduced Gravity Conditions

We examined the effect of the gas flow on the liquid film when the gas flows in the countercurrent direction in a vertical pipe at normal gravity conditions. The most dramatic effect of the simultaneous flow of gas and liquid in pipes is the greatly increased transport rates of heat, mass, and momentum. In practical situations this enhancement can be a benefit or it can result in serious operational problems. For example, gas-liquid flow always results in substantially higher pressure drop and this is usually undesirable. However, much higher heat transfer coefficients can be expected and this can obviously be of benefit for purposes of design. Unfortunately, designers know so little of the behavior of such two phase systems and as a result these advantages are not utilized. Due to the complexity of the second order boundary model as well as the fact that the pressure variation across the film is small compared to the imposed gas phase pressure, the countercurrent gas flow affect was studied for the standard boundary layer model. A different stream function that can compensate the shear stress affect was developed and this stream function also can predict periodic solutions. The discretized model equations were transformed to a traveling wave coordinate system. A stability analysis of these sets of equations showed the presence of a Hopf bifurcation for certain values of the traveling wave velocity and the shear stress. The Hopf celerity was increased due to the countercurrent shear. For low flow rate the increases of celerity are more than for the high flow rate, which was also observed in experiments. Numerical integration of a traveling wave simplification of the model also predicts the existence of chaotic large amplitude, nonperiodic waves as observed in the experiments. The film thickness was increased by the shear.

Three-Dimensional Dynamics of a Magnetic Hopfion Driven by Spin Transfer Torque

Magnetic hopfion is a three-dimensional (3D) topological soliton with novel spin structure that would enable exotic dynamics. Herein, we observe and research the current-driven 3D dynamics of a magnetic hopfion with a unit Hopf index in a frustrated magnet. Attributed to the spin Berry phase and symmetry of the hopfion, the phase space entangles multiple collective coordinates, thus the hopfion exhibits rich dynamics including longitudinal motion along the current direction, transverse motion perpendicular to the current direction, rotational motion, and dilation. Furthermore, the characteristics of hopfion dynamics is determined by the ratio between the nonadiabatic spin transfer torque parameter and the damping parameter. Such peculiar 3D dynamics of magnetic hopfion could shed light on understanding the universal physics of hopfions in different systems and boost the prosperous development of 3D spintronics.

Asymptotic form of the longitudinal correlation function for isotropic homogeneous turbulence

An asymptotic form is derived for the longitudinal correlation function for isotropic homogeneous turbulence in an incompressible fluid governed by the Navier-Stokes equation. The result is obtained from an analysis of the algebraic-differential structure of the two-point correlation tensor contained in the complex-valued Fourier transform of the probability measure over the turbulence ensemble, which reveals that the Hopf characteristic functional (the complex-valued Fourier transform of the probability measure) satisfies the Fourier interference inequality. Consequences of the expression obtained, in which the correlation function is a positive definite function of the inverse cube of the spatial coordinate as it approaches infinity, are shown to include the nonexistence of the Loitsianskii invariant, and the solution is shown to be consistent with empirical formulas.

A study of pilot modeling in multi-controller tasks

A modeling approach, which utilizes a matrix of transfer functions to describe the human pilot in multiple input, multiple output control situations, is studied. The approach used was to extend a well established scalar Wiener-Hopf minimization technique to the matrix case and then study, via a series of experiments, the data requirements when only finite record lengths are available. One of these experiments was a two-controller roll tracking experiment designed to force the pilot to use rudder in order to coordinate and reduce the effects of aileron yaw. One model was computed for the case where the signals used to generate the spectral matrix are error and bank angle while another model was computed for the case where error and yaw angle are the inputs. Several anomalies were observed to be present in the experimental data. These are defined by the descriptive terms roll up, break up, and roll down. Due to these algorithm induced anomalies, the frequency band over which reliable estimates of power spectra can be achieved is considerably less than predicted by the sampling theorem.

Interaction of upstream flow distortions with high Mach number cascades

Features of the interaction of flow distortions, such as gusts and wakes with blade rows of advance type fans and compressors having high tip Mach numbers are modeled. A typical disturbance was assumed to have harmonic time dependence and was described, at a far upstream location, in three orthogonal spatial coordinates by a double Fourier series. It was convected at supersonic relative to a linear cascade described as an unrolled annulus. Conditions were selected so that the component of this velocity parallel to the axis of the turbomachine was subsonic, permitting interaction between blades through the upstream as well as downstream flow media. A strong, nearly normal shock was considered in the blade passages which was allowed curvature and displacement. The flows before and after the shock were linearized relative to uniform mean velocities in their respective regions. Solution of the descriptive equations was by adaption of the Wiener-Hopf technique, enabling a determination of distortion patterns through and downstream of the cascade as well as pressure distributions on the blade and surfaces. Details of interaction of the disturbance with the in-passage shock were discussed. Infuences of amplitude, wave length, and phase of the disturbance on lifts and moments of cascade configurations are presented. Numerical results are clarified by reference to an especially orderly pattern of upstream vertical motion in relation to the cascade parameters.
