HfRu3 is Uranium Silicide-like structured and crystallizes in the hexagonal P6_3/mmc space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Hf is bonded to twelve equivalent Ru atoms to form a mixture of face and corner-sharing HfRu12 cuboctahedra. There are six shorter (2.78 Å) and six longer (2.83 Å) Hf–Ru bond lengths. Ru is bonded in a distorted see-saw-like geometry to four equivalent Hf atoms.

Hf is bonded to twelve equivalent Ru atoms to form a mixture of corner and face-sharing HfRu12 cuboctahedra. All Hf–Ru bond lengths are 2.80 Å. Ru is bonded in a distorted square co-planar geometry to four equivalent Hf atoms.
