Extraction of gold, mercury and lead on CL resin in HCl

The uptake behavior of 197 mHg, 194 Au and 212 Pb in HCl on CL resin (Triskem) was studied. The extraction of mercury and gold is high (D w > 5,000) at all concentrations of HCl, with a maximum extraction of gold at 4 M HCl (D w ~ 53,000) and maximum extraction of mercury at 0.01 M HCl (D w ~ 44,000). Lead has moderate uptake on CL resin (D w ~ 100) from lower concentrations of HCl (0.001 to 0.05 M) and no uptake on the resin in concentrations ≥ 0.4 M. The uptake kinetics are similar for all three isotopes with high weight distribution ratios (>1,000 for 197 mHg, 194 Au and > 100 for 212 Pb) in ~ 30 s and equilibrium established at ~ 5 min. A column study was performed to demonstrate that 197m Hg, 194 Au and 212 Pb could be retained on CL resin in dilute HCl and 212 Pb eluted in 1 M HCl with no detectable 197m Hg or 194 Au. Elution of 197 mHg and 194 Au was performed with concentrated HNO 3 , but with significant losses to the column, particularly for 194 Au.

Extraction of gold, mercury, and lead with TEVA resin from HCl and HNO 3

The extraction behavior of 212 Pb, 197m Hg, and 194 Au on TEVA resin in HCl and HNO 3 solutions was studied with batch uptake, kinetics, and column studies. The uptake of mercury and gold was extremely high from HCl solutions, with maximum k’ >80,000 for both elements. The uptake of mercury was lower in HNO3 than HCl with a maximum k’ of ~ 8,000 in 0.02 M HNO 3 and decreasing uptake at higher concentrations of HNO3, which agrees well with previous work. The batch uptake of gold in HNO 3 was not measured, as it had been reported previously. The uptake of lead on TEVA resin in HCl was low with a maximum k’ of only ~ 90 in 1 M HCl. The uptake of lead in HNO 3 was negligible. The uptake kinetics of gold and mercury were characterized in HCl and HNO 3 solutions and high uptake was seen after ~ 60 s for both elements. Column separations of 212 Pb, 197m Hg, and 194 Au on TEVA resin from HCl and HNO 3 solutions are reported with high yields of mercury and lead, but with high losses of gold, which is retained on the resin. A rapid, high yield separation of 197m Hg from irradiated gold foils is presented with yields of ~ 100% for both elements and a total separation time of < 2 h.

Surface chlorination of IrO2(110) by HCl

The ability to controllably chlorinate metal-oxide surfaces can provide opportunities for designing selective oxidation catalysts. In the present study, we investigated the surface chlorination of IrO2(110) by HCl using temperature programmed reaction spectroscopy (TPRS), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We find that exposing IrO2(110) to HCl, followed by heating to 650 K in ultrahigh vacuum, produces nearly equal quantities of on-top and bridging Cl atoms on the surface, Clt and Clbr, where the Clbr atoms replace O-atoms that are removed from the surface by H2O formation. After HCl adsorption at 85 K, only H2O desorbs at low Cl coverages during TPRS, but HCl begins to desorb in increasing yields as the Cl coverage is increased above about 0.5 monolayer (ML). The desorption of Cl2 was not observed under any conditions, in good agreement with the high barrier for this reaction predicted by DFT. A maximum Cl coverage of 1 ML, with nearly equal coverages of Clt and Clbr atoms, could be generated by reacting HCl with IrO2(110) in UHV. Our results suggest that a kinetic competition between recombinative HCl and H2O desorption under the conditions studied limits the saturation Cl coverage to a value less than the 2 ML maximum predicted by thermodynamics. XPS further shows that the partitioning of Cl between the Clt and Clbr states can be altered by subjecting partially chlorinated IrO2(110) to reductive or oxidative treatments, demonstrating that the Cl site population can change dynamically in response to the gas environment. Our results provide insights for understanding the chlorination of IrO2(110) by HCl and can enable future experimental studies to determine how Cl-modification alters the surface chemical reactivity of IrO2(110) and potentially enhances selectivity toward partial oxidation chemistry.

Separation of zirconium and hafnium from early actinides and rare earth elements with eichrom’s pb resin in HCl

The separation of zirconium and hafnium isotopes from the early actinides and rare earth elements (REE) with Eichrom’s Pb resin has been studied. Batch studies were performed to characterize the behavior of actinium, thorium, zirconium, hafnium, lutetium, and yttrium on Pb resin from HCl solutions (0.001 M to 11 M). The early actinides and REE had no affinity for the resin at any concentration of HCl, but zirconium and hafnium showed a moderate uptake at high concentrations of HCl with a maximum extraction at 11 M HCl. Several column separations were tested, including with only tracer isotopes and with mass. Rapid, simple separations of zirconium from actinium, thorium, protactinium, and the REE with high yields and low elution volumes are presented with applications for tracer isotope production and fission product separations. Furthermore, the resin is less suitable for hafnium separations as hafnium tends to bleed off the resin even at high concentrations of HCl.

Quadrupolar NMR crystallography guided crystal structure prediction (QNMRX-CSP) of zwitterionic organic HCl salts

In this work, we benchmark quadrupolar NMR crystallography guided crystal structure prediction (QNMRX-CSP) for determining the crystal structures of two zwitterionic organic HCl salts, L-ornithine HCl ( Orn ) and L-histidine HCl·H 2 O ( Hist ). These salts present an interesting challenge for QNMRX-CSP, as gas-phase geometry optimizations used to generate starting structures for the organic zwitterionic fragments fail to capture their correct solid-state geometries. To overcome this limitation, geometry optimizations using the COSMO water-solvation model are employed to generate initial structural models. Using this approach, QNMRX-CSP yields structural models of the two zwitterionic organic HCl salts that closely match experimentally determined crystal structures. In addition, the application of QNMRX-CSP to Hist represents a further step toward the de novo structural determination of solvated organic HCl salts, as Hist is the first benchmark system of this type to include a water molecule as a component of its crystal structure. This work is significant for its potential application to the structural determination of active pharmaceutical ingredients, which often feature complex organic components and solvated solid forms.

Extraction of selenium and arsenic with TOA-impregnated XAD-2 resin from HCl

Here the uptake of 75 Se and 73 As on trioctylamine-impregnated resin from HCl solutions was studied with batch uptake, kinetics, and column studies. Selenium-75 extracts well (D w ~ 900) at high HCl concentrations (≥ 10 M) with and no extraction of 73 As at any HCl concentration. The uptake kinetics were slow with low extraction (D w < 100) for time periods ≤ 15 min and no clear equilibrium achieved even after 24 h. Column studies were performed to characterize the separation of 75 Se and 73 As; 75Se is retained from conc. HCl while arsenic is eluted with high yields and high radiopurity.

Ab initio quantum scattering calculations and a new potential energy surface for the HCl( X 1Σ+)–O2(X3Σg−) system: Collision-induced line shape parameters for O2-perturbed R(0) 0–0 line in H35Cl

The remote sensing of abundance and properties of HCl—the main atmospheric reservoir of Cl atoms that directly participate in ozone depletion—is important for monitoring the partitioning of chlorine between “ozone-depleting” and “reservoir” species. Such remote studies require knowledge of the shapes of molecular resonances of HCl, which are perturbed by collisions with the molecules of the surrounding air. In this work, we report the first fully quantum calculations of collisional perturbations of the shape of a pure rotational line in H35Cl perturbed by an air-relevant molecule [as the first model system we choose the R(0) line in HCl perturbed by O2]. The calculations are performed on our new highly accurate HCl(X1Σ+)–O2(X3Σg−) potential energy surface. In addition to pressure broadening and shift, we also determine their speed dependencies and the complex Dicke parameter. This gives important input to the community discussion on the physical meaning of the complex Dicke parameter and its relevance for atmospheric spectra (previously, the complex Dicke parameter for such systems was mainly determined from phenomenological fits to experimental spectra and the physical meaning of its value in that context is questionable). We also calculate the temperature dependence of the line shape parameters and obtain agreement with the available experimental data. We estimate the total combined uncertainties of our calculations at 2% relative root-mean-square error in the simulated line shape at 296 K. This result constitutes an important step toward computational population of spectroscopic databases with accurate ab initio line shape parameters for molecular systems of terrestrial atmospheric importance.

Uptake behavior of 73 As, 75 Se, 197m Hg, 212 Pb and 210 Po on Eichrom pre-filter resin from HCl and HNO 3

We report the extraction of 73 As, 75 Se, 197 mHg, 212 Pb and 210 Po on Eichrom pre-filter resin was studied in HCl and HNO 3 with batch uptake, kinetic and column experiments. There was significant extraction of mercury in HNO 3 and HCl, and polonium and selenium in HCl. The kinetics are sufficient to allow for retention on pre-filter columns, and separations of 73 As from 75 Se and 197 mHg, and 212 Pb from 210 Po are demonstrated. This retention is important for the development of chemical separations as pre-filter resin is commonly used alongside extraction chromatography resins but its potential for uptake of metal ions is not well characterized.

Potential energy profile for the Cl + (H 2 O) 3 → HCl + (H 2 O) 2 OH reaction. A CCSD(T) study

Four different reaction pathways are initially located for the reaction of Cl atom plus water trimer Cl + (H 2 O) 3 → HCl + (H 2 O) 2 OH using a standard DFT method. As found for the analogous fluorine reaction, the geometrical and energetic results for the four chlorine pathways are closely related. However, the energetics for the Cl reaction are very different from those for fluorine. Here in this paper, we investigate the lowest-energy chlorine pathway using the “gold standard” CCSD(T) method in conjunction with correlation-consistent basis sets up to cc-pVQZ. Structurally, the stationary points for the water trimer reaction Cl + (H 2 O) 3 may be compared to those for the water monomer reaction Cl + H 2 O and water dimer reaction Cl + (H 2 O) 2 . Based on the CCSD(T) energies, the title reaction is endothermic by 19.3 kcal mol -1 , with a classical barrier height of 16.7 kcal mol -1 between the reactants and the exit complex. There is no barrier for the reverse reaction. The Cl … (H 2 O) 3 entrance complex lies 5.3 kcal mol -1 below the separated reactants. The HCl … (H 2 O) 2 OH exit complex is bound by 8.6 kcal mol -1 relative to the separated products. The Cl + (H 2 O) 3 reaction is somewhat similar to the analogous Cl + (H 2 O) 2 reaction, but qualitatively different from the Cl + H 2 O reaction. It is reasonable to expect that the reactions between the chlorine atom and larger water clusters may be similar to the Cl + (H 2 O) 3 reaction. The potential energy profile for the Cl + (H 2 O) 3 reaction is radically different from that for the valence isoelectronic F + (H 2 O) 3 system, which may be related to the different bond energies between HCl and HF.

Chlorination of uranium metal in molten NaCl-CaCl 2 via bubbling HCl

Molten chloride salt fast reactors (MCFRs) will require UCl 3 dissolved in molten salt mixtures as fuel for nuclear fission. For infusing the salt with UCl 3 , bubbling HCl into NaCl-CaCl 2 in contact with U metal was investigated. The reaction was run up to 9 h and yielded U concentration up to 0.652 wt.%. Open circuit potential between a W electrode and Ag/AgCl reference electrode yielded a potential consistent with uranium existing as U(III) in the salt. Furthermore, this demonstrates that HCl can be a very effective chlorinating agent to infuse MCFR fuel with UCl 3 starting from U metal.

Extraction of 197 mHg with TIBPS in HNO 3 and HCl media

Here, the extraction of no carrier added mercury by tri-isobutyl phosphine sulfide (TIBPS) was characterized in HCl and HNO 3 media. The extraction of 197 mHg as a function of acid concentration was similar in both acids over a large acid concentration (0.001 M to conc.) with high extraction (D ~ 1000) at low concentrations and decreasing extraction for higher concentrations (≥ 4 M). The kinetics of extraction were rapid (~ 5 min.) in both acids. Speciation experiments indicated that the extraction mechanism is 1:2 ( 197 mHg:TIBPS) in HCl and 1:1 in HNO 3 .

Behavior of selenium and arsenic in $\mathrm{HCl}$ and $\mathrm{HNO}$ 3 on $\mathrm{TRU, TEVA, DGA,}$ and $\mathrm{Pb}$ extraction chromatography resins

The uptake behavior of 73 As and 75 Se was studied in HCl and HNO 3 -H 2 O 2 solutions on commercial extraction chromatography resins (TEVA, TRU, DGA, and Pb resin). There was no uptake of 73 As or 75 Se from HNO 3 media. From HCl, there was 75 Se uptake at high concentrations on all the resins and no uptake of 73 As. Separations of 75 Se and 73 As on these resins have high yields and high radiopurity for 73 As, but limited recovery of 75 Se. TRU and TEVA resin may have potential for use in isotope generators as 75 Se can be retained for at least 26 days with repeated elutions.

Uptake behavior of arsenic and selenium with sulfur-based extraction chromatography resins in HCl and HNO 3 media

Here, the uptake behavior of 73 As and 75 Se was studied in HCl and HNO3 media with CL resin, ethanethiol resin and dimethyl sulfide resin. In HCl solutions, there was high extraction of selenium on CL resin and ethanethiol resin but lower uptake on dimethyl sulfide resin; arsenic was only extracted by CL resin. From HNO 3 , selenium was extracted only by ethanethiol resin and CL resin and there was no uptake of arsenic on any resin. While the sulfur-based resins have high selenium uptake and selectivity, column separations are challenging due to the chemical instability of these resins.

Closing the Gap Between Experiment and Theory: Reactive Scattering of HCl from Au(111)

Accurate simulation of molecules reacting on metal surfaces, which can help in improving heterogeneous catalysts, remains out of reach for several reactions. For example, a large disagreement between theory and experiment for HCl reacting on Au(111) still remains, despite many efforts. In this work, the dissociative chemisorption of HCl on Au(111) is investigated with a recently developed MGGA density functional (MS-RPBEl) and a high-dimensional neural network potential. Additionally, previous experimental sticking probabilities are re-examined. A considerably improved agreement between experiment and theory is obtained, although theory still overestimates experimental sticking probabilities by a factor of 2-7 at the highest incidence energy. Computed and measured vibrational transition probabilities are also in improved agreement. Several dynamical effects such as angular steering and energy transfer from the molecule to the surface are found to play an important role.

Insertion products in the reaction of carbonyl oxide Criegee intermediates with acids: Chloro(hydroperoxy)methane formation from reaction of CH 2 OO with HCl and DCl

The reactions of carbonyl oxides (“Criegee intermediates”) with organic and inorganic acids have been postulated to proceed predominantly by an insertion mechanism, and the hydroperoxy-substituted ester products from reactions with organic acids have been spectroscopically observed. Here this work characterizes the products from one of the simplest reactions of carbonyl oxides with inorganic acids, that of formaldehyde oxide, CH 2 OO, with hydrogen chloride, which occurs via a 1,2-insertion in the H–Cl bond. Reactions of both HCl and DCl isotopologues yield product signal at the mass of the insertion product chloro(hydroperoxy)methane and a dissociative ionisation peak at the mass of the protonated (or deuteronated) Criegee intermediate. The isotopic composition of the insertion product has been measured for reaction mixtures where both HCl isotopologues are present, and the H/D ratio of the product is consistently higher (by a factor of 1.6 ± 0.3) than that of the reactants. This isotope selectivity in the products has smaller uncertainty than the ratio of measured rate coefficients and suggests a normal (k H > k D ) kinetic isotope effect in the reaction. Theoretical kinetics calculations predict a small normal kinetic isotope effect for the overall reaction (k H / k D = 1.35 at 20 Torr N 2 and k H / k D = 1.2 for 1 atm N 2 ) but predict a substantial inverse kinetic isotope effect (k D > k H ) for the stabilisation fraction, in disagreement with the experimental observation.
