Materials Data on HC2 by Materials Project

C2H crystallizes in the monoclinic C2/m space group. The structure is one-dimensional and consists of two C2H ribbons oriented in the (0, 1, 0) direction. there are two inequivalent C+0.50- sites. In the first C+0.50- site, C+0.50- is bonded in a trigonal planar geometry to three C+0.50- atoms. There is two shorter (1.41 Å) and one longer (1.47 Å) C–C bond length. In the second C+0.50- site, C+0.50- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to two equivalent C+0.50- and one H1+ atom. The C–H bond length is 1.09 Å. H1+ is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one C+0.50- atom.

Mechanism of enhanced critical fields and critical current densities of MgB2 wires with C/Dy$^{2}$O3 co-additions

A series of monofilamentary powder-in-tube MgB2 wires were fabricated with 2 mol. % C doping and co-additions of 0–3 wt. % Dy2O3. Irreversibility fields (μ0Hirr), upper critical fields (μ0Hc2), and transport critical currents were measured, and from these quantities, anisotropies (γ) and electronic diffusivities (Dπ,σ) were estimated. The addition of 1 wt. % Dy2O3 to already optimally C-doped MgB2 wires produced higher Hc2//ab, Hc2//c, and Hirr values at 4.2 K. In addition, the critical current density, Jc, increased with Dy2O3 concentration up to 1 wt. % where non-barrier Jc reached 4.35 × 104 A/cm2 at 4.2 K, 10 T. At higher temperatures, for example, 20 K and 5 T, co-additions of 2 mol. % C and 2 wt. % Dy2O3 improved non-barrier Jc by 40% and 93% compared to 2 and 3 mol. % C doping, respectively. On the other hand, measurements of Tc showed that C/Dy2O3 co-additions increase interband scattering rates at a lower rate than C doping does (assuming C doping levels giving similar levels of low-T μ0Hc2 increase as co-addition). Comparisons to a two-band model for μ0Hc2 in MgB2 allowed us to conclude that the increases in Hc2//ab, Hc2//c, and Hirr (as well as concomitant increases in high-field Jc) with Dy2O3 addition are consistent with increases primarily in intraband scattering. This suggests C/Dy2O3 co-addition to be a more promising candidate for improving non-barrier Jc of MgB2 at temperatures above 20 K.

Pathway to tune sputter coated Nb$_3$Sn with Zr

Superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities are essential elements of many modern-day particle accelerators such as, European XFEL (DESY), LCLS II-HE (SLAC) and PIP II (Fermilab). Nb$_3$Sn superconducting material promises significant potential to exceed the performance of conventional niobium based SRF cavities. We aim to advance the ongoing R$&$D efforts to achieve Nb$_3$Sn coated cavities with high material quality. In this work, we have developed to achieve a route for effectively reducing the intrinsic defects in magnetron sputter coated Nb$_3$Sn SRF cavities and eventually improve the overall RF performance. We have observed that Zr is mainly being incorporated as ZrO$_2$ precipitates of average dimensions ranging from 20-100nm. By increasing the concentration of Zr, we have three major effects in the physical properties. Firstly, we noted that the density of the surface and bulk voids as well as their average dimensions are dramatically reduced on increasing the Zr content in Nb$_3$Sn. These surface voids are believed to be detrimental to cavity applications due to increase the local dissipation of electric and magnetic fields. These results indicate that inclusion of Zr in Nb$_3$Sn sputtered coating will improve the material quality and might help to reduce the overall RF power dissipation. Secondly, we observed that increasing Zr concentration from 0 to 2.4% substantially improves both superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and upper critical magnetic field (Hc2). However, on further increasing the Zr concentration to 24%, we noticed a small decrement in the Hc2 value. These results infer that the increase in Zr concentration up to an optimal concentration will be beneficial to enhance the superconducting properties. Increase in Tc promises lesser RF losses and improvement in accelerating gradient, whereas the increase in Hc2 suggests more efficient flux pinning which could give rise to high quality factors in presence of multi-Tesla magnetic field. Additionally, we also observed that increasing Zr concentration possibly prevents the oxygen diffusion and leads to thinner formation of primary surface oxide (Nb$_2$O$_5$ and SnO). This study gives a route to tune Zr fraction in Nb3Sn to modify the physical properties that control the high field performance of Nb3Sn RF cavities.

Crystal Structure and Characterization of Human Heavy-Chain Only Antibodies Reveals a Novel, Stable Dimeric Structure Similar to Monoclonal Antibodies

We report the novel crystal structure and characterization of symmetrical, homodimeric humanized heavy-chain-only antibodies or dimers (HC2s). HC2s were found to be significantly coexpressed and secreted along with mAbs from transient CHO HC/LC cotransfection, resulting in an unacceptable mAb developability attribute. Expression of full-length HC2s in the absence of LC followed by purification resulted in HC2s with high purity and thermal stability similar to conventional mAbs. The V H and C H 1 portion of the heavy chain (or Fd) was also efficiently expressed and yielded a stable, covalent, and reducible dimer (Fd2). Mutagenesis of all heavy chain cysteines involved in disulfide bond formation revealed that Fd2 intermolecular disulfide formation was similar to Fabs and elucidated requirements for Fd2 folding and expression. For one HC2, we solved the crystal structure of the Fd2 domain to 2.9 Å, revealing a highly symmetrical homodimer that is structurally similar to Fabs and is mediated by conserved (C H 1) and variable (V H ) contacts with all CDRs positioned outward for target binding. Interfacial dimer contacts revealed by the crystal structure were mutated for two HC2s and were found to dramatically affect HC2 formation while maintaining mAb bioactivity, offering a potential means to modulate novel HC2 formation through engineering. These findings indicate that human heavy-chain dimers can be secreted efficiently in the absence of light chains, may show good physicochemical properties and stability, are structurally similar to Fabs, offer insights into their mechanism of formation, and may be amenable as a novel therapeutic modality.

Upper critical field of high temperature Y(1.2)Ba(0.8)CuO(4-delta) superconductor

A 20-T high-field magnet is used to measure electrical resistance as a function of temperature in the Y(1.2)Ba(0.8)CuO(4-delta) superconductor. The temperature dependence of the critical field, Hc2(T), is obtained from the superconduction transition. A Hc2(O) value of 166T is determined which is the highest critical field yet reported. Results show Y(1.2)Ba(0.8)CuO(4-delta) to be a 90K Type-II superconductor, with a lower critical field Hc1(O) of about 0.2T and a penetration depth of about 290 A.

Analysis of the Surface Morphology and Chemical Composition of Zr-Nb3Sn Alloys with Different Zr Concentrations

In the field of superconducting science, Nb has been the material of choice for Radio Frequency (RF) Cavities for years. However, in recent years Nb3Sn has shown to be a promising alternative to Nb. Its combination of a significantly high superconducting transition temperature and a much higher value of upper critical magnetic field (Hc2), has been the reason the alloy has been so widely studied. This project aims to develop materials to further improve the high magnetic field performance of Nb3Sn by improving its upper critical magnetic field and critical current density (Jc). One way to improve the Jc and the Hc2 is to create more grain boundaries in the Nb3Sn alloy allowing them to trap more magnetic flux lines in the materials. To do this the grains must be made smaller which will naturally cause the formation of more grain boundaries. A common way to create smaller grains is by doping an impurity in the alloy. In this study, Nb3Sn was doped with Zr to form Zr-Nb3Sn alloys. This project investigates the surface properties and chemical composition of Zr-Nb3Sn alloys with varying zirconium concentrations (~0.5% and ~24% Zr). Using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (XPS), allowed for the characterization of the differences in surface morphology and elemental composition between samples. SEM images were quantified using ImageJ giving insight into grain distribution. The results indicate that increased Zr concentration creates smaller grains in the Zr-Nb3Sn alloy. Furthermore, the ~ 24% Zr grew nanoscale particles on the surface that are possible oxides. XPS data revealed that as Zr concentration increased, the total Nb oxides (NbOx) thickness decreased. Conversely, as Zr concentration increased, the surface Sn oxides (SnOx) also increased slightly. Quantification via ImageJ of SEM data showed that the ~ 0.5% Zr sample had a grain size of ~ 5300 nm2. These results show that Zr inclusion leads to smaller grain formations, which is promising in the world of superconducting RF cavities for high magnetic field applications.

Dual-phase superconductivity in high-pressure high-temperature synthesized TaNbZrHfTi

We report on a novel TaNbZrHfTi-based high entropy alloy (HEA) which demonstrates distinctive dual-phase superconductivity. The HEA was synthesized under high pressures and high temperatures starting from a ball milled mixture of elemental metals in a large-volume Paris–Edinburgh cell with P ≈ 6 GPa and T = 2300 K. The synthesized HEA is a phase mixture of BCC (NbTa)0.45(ZrHfTi)0.55 with Tc1 = 6 K and FCC (NbTa)0.04(ZrHfTi)0.96 with Tc2 = 3.75 K. The measured magnetic field parameters for the HEA are lower critical field, Hc1(0) = 31 mT, and a relatively high upper critical field, Hc2(0) = 4.92 T. This dual-phase system is further characterized by the presence of a second magnetization peak, or the fishtail effect, observed in the virgin magnetization curves. This phenomenon, which does not distort the field-dependent magnetization hysteresis loops, suggests intricate pinning mechanisms that could be potentially tuned for optimized performance. The manifestation of these unique features in HEA superconductivity reinforces phase-dependent superconductivity and opens new avenues in the exploration of novel superconducting materials.

Design and feasibility of a novel program of cervical screening in Nigeria: self-sampled HPV testing paired with visual triage

Background: Accelerated global control of cervical cancer would require primary prevention with human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in addition to novel screening program strategies that are simple, inexpensive, and effective. We present the feasibility and outcome of a community-based HPV self-sampled screening program. Methods: In Ile Ife, Nigeria, 9406 women aged 30–49 years collected vaginal self-samples, which were tested for HPV in the local study laboratory using Hybrid Capture-2 (HC2) (Qiagen). HPV-positive women were referred to the colposcopy clinic. Gynecologist colposcopic impression dictated immediate management; biopsies were taken when definite acetowhitening was present to produce a histopathologic reference standard of precancer (and to determine final clinical management). Retrospective linkage to the medical records identified 442 of 9406 women living with HIV (WLWH). Results: With self-sampling, it was possible to screen more than 100 women per day per clinic. Following an audio-visual presentation and in-person instructions, overall acceptability of self-sampling was very high (81.2% women preferring self-sampling over clinician collection). HPV positivity was found in 17.3% of women. Intensive follow-up contributed to 85.9% attendance at the colposcopy clinic. Of those referred, 8.2% were initially treated with thermal ablation and 5.6% with large loop excision of transformation zone (LLETZ). Full visibility of the squamocolumnar junction, necessary for optimal visual triage and ablation, declined from 68.5% at age 30 to 35.4% at age 49. CIN2+ and CIN3+ (CIN- Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia), including five cancers, were identified by histology in 5.9 and 3.2% of the HPV-positive women, respectively (0.9 and 0.5% of the total screening population), leading to additional treatment as indicated. The prevalences of HPV infection and CIN2+ were substantially higher (40.5 and 2.5%, respectively) among WLWH. Colposcopic impression led to over- and under-treatment compared to the histopathology reference standard. Conclusion: A cervical cancer screening program using self-sampled HPV testing, with colposcopic immediate management of women positive for HPV, proved feasible in Nigeria. Based on the collected specimens and images, we are now evaluating the use of a combination of partial HPV typing and automated visual evaluation (AVE) of cervical images to improve the accuracy of the screening program.

Superconductivity at 93 K in a new mixed-phase Y-Ba-Cu-O compound system at ambient pressure

A stable and reproducible superconductivity transition between 80 and 93 K has been achieved and maintained in a Y-Ba-Cu-O compound system at ambient pressure in a simple liquid-nitrogen Dewar. An upper critical field Hc2(0) estimate of between 80 and 180 T is obtained, and the paramagnetic limiting field at 0 K for a sample with a T(c) of about 90 K is 165 T. It is suggested that the lattice parameters, the valence ratio, and the sample treatments all play a role in achieving superconductivity above 77 K.

Quaternary borocarbides: New class of intermetallic superconductors

Our recent discovery of superconductivity (SC) in the four-element multiphase Y-Ni-B-C system at an elevated temperature (TC approximately 12 K) has opened up great possibilities of identifying new superconducting materials and generating new physics. Superconductivity with Tc (greater than 20 K) higher than that known so far in bulk intermetallics has been observed in multiphase Y-Pd-B-C and Th-Pd-B-C systems and a family of single phase materials RENi2B2C (RE= Y, rare earth) have been found. Our investigations show YNi2B2C to be a strong coupling hard type-II SC. HC2(T) exhibits an unconventional temperature dependence. Specific heat and magnetization studies reveal coexistence of SC and magnetism in RNi2B2C (R = Ho, Er, Tm) with magnetic ordering temperatures (Tc approximately 8 K, 10.5 K, 11 K and Tm approximately 5 K, approximately 7K, approximately 4 K respectively) that are remarkably higher than those in known magnetic superconductors . Mu-SR studies suggest the possibility of Ni atoms carrying a moment in TmNi2B2C. Resistivity results suggests a double re-entrant transition (SC-normal-SC) in HoNi2B2C. RENi2B2C (RE = Ce, Nd, Gd) do not show SC down to 4.2 K. The Nd- and Gd-compounds order magnetically at approximately 4.5 K and approximately 19.5 K, respectively. Two SC transitions are observed in Y-Pd-B-C (Tc approximately 22 K, approximately 10 K) and in Th-Pd-B-C (Tc approximately 20 K, approximately 14 K) systems, which indicate that there are at least two structures which support SC in these borocarbides. In our multiphase ThNi2B2C we observe SC at approximately 6 K. No SC was seen in multiphase UNi2B2C, UPd2B2C, UOs2Ge2C and UPd5B3C(0.35) down to 4.2 K. Tc in YNi2B2C is depressed by substitutions (Gd, Th and U at Y-sites and Fe, Co at Ni-sites).

Approaching the ultimate superconducting properties of (Ba,K)Fe 2 As 2 by naturally formed low-angle grain boundary networks

The most effective way to enhance the dissipation-free supercurrent in the presence of a magnetic field for type II superconductors is to introduce defects that act as artificial pinning centers (APCs) for vortices. For instance, the in-field critical current density of doped BaFe 2 As 2 (Ba122), one of the most technologically important Fe-based superconductors, has been improved over the last decade by APCs created by ion irradiation. The technique of ion irradiation has been commonly implemented to determine the ultimate superconducting properties. However, this method is rather complicated and expensive. Here, we report a surprisingly high critical current density and strong pinning efficiency close to the crystallographic c-axis for a K-doped Ba122 epitaxial thin film without APCs, achieving performance comparable to ion-irradiated K-doped Ba122 single crystals. Microstructural analysis reveals that the film is composed of columnar grains with widths of approximately 30–60 nm. The grains are rotated around the b- (or a-) axis by 1.5° and around the c-axis by –1°, resulting in the formation of low-angle grain boundary networks. This study demonstrates that the upper limit of in-field properties reached in ion-irradiated K-doped Ba122 is achievable by grain boundary engineering, which is a simple and industrially scalable manner.

Origin of the enhanced Nb3Sn performance by combined Hf and Ta doping

Abstract In recent years there has been an increasing effort in improving the performance of Nb 3 Sn for high-field applications, in particular for the fabrication of conductors suitable for the realization of the Future Circular Collider (FCC) at CERN. This challenging task has led to the investigation of new routes to advance the high-field pinning properties, the irreversibility and the upper critical fields ( H Irr and H c2 , respectively). The effect of hafnium addition to the standard Nb-4Ta alloy has been recently demonstrated to be particularly promising and, in this paper, we investigate the origins of the observed improvements of the superconducting properties. Electron microscopy, Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure Spectroscopy (EXAFS) and Atom Probe Tomography (APT) characterization clearly show that, in presence of oxygen, both fine Nb 3 Sn grains and HfO 2 nanoparticles form. Although EXAFS is unable to detect significant amounts of Hf in the A15 structure, APT does indeed reveal some residual intragrain metallic Hf. To investigate the layer properties in more detail, we created a microbridge from a thin lamella extracted by Focused Ion Beam (FIB) and measured the transport properties of Ta-Hf-doped Nb 3 Sn. H c2 (0) is enhanced to 30.8 T by the introduction of Hf, ~ 1 T higher than those of only Ta-doped Nb 3 Sn, and, even more importantly the position of the pinning force maximum exceeds 6 T, against the typical ~ 4.5–4.7 T of the only Ta-doped material. These results show that the improvements generated by Hf addition can significantly enhance the high-field performance, bringing Nb 3 Sn closer to the requirements necessary for FCC realization.

Influence of Nb alloying on Nb recrystallization and the upper critical field of Nb 3 ⁢Sn

Nb 3 Sn conductors are important candidates for high-field magnets for particle accelerators, and they continue to be widely used for many laboratory and NMR magnets. However, the critical current density, J c , of present Nb 3 Sn conductors declines swiftly above 12-15 T. State-of-the-art Ta- and Ti-doped strands exhibit upper critical field, H c2 , values of ~ 24-26.5 T (4.2 K) and do not reach the FCC target J c , which serves as the present stretch target for Nb 3 Sn development. As recently demonstrated, to meet this goal requires enhanced vortex pinning but an independent and supplementary approach is to significantly enhance H c2 . In this study, we have arc-melted multiple Nb alloys with added Hf, Zr, Ta and Ti and drawn them successfully into monofilament wires to investigate the possibilities of H c2 enhancement through alloying. H c2 (T) was measured for all samples in fields up to 16 T and some up to 31 T. We have found that all alloys show good agreement with the standard Werthamer, Helfand, and Hohenberg (WHH) fitting procedure without the need to adjust the paramagnetic limitation parameter (α) and spin-orbit scattering parameter (λ so ). The evaluation of dH c2 /dT near T c , which is proportional to the electronic specific heat coefficient γ and the normal state resistivity ρn, allows a better understanding of the induced disorder introduced by alloying in the A15 phase. So far, we have observed that Hf alloying of pure Nb can enhance H c2 (0) by 3-4 T to ~28 T, while adding just 1 at. %Hf or Zr into a Nb4Ta base alloy can raise H c2 (0) to ~31 T. Very importantly we find that Hf and Zr raise the alloy recrystallization temperature above the usual A15 reaction temperature range of 650°C – 750°C, thus ensuring denser A15 phase nucleation in the Nb alloy grain boundaries, possibly leading to a more homogeneous A15 phase Sn content and refined A15 grain size. Furthermore, the potential for further advancements in Nb 3 Sn properties is explored in relation to the recrystallization of the Nb alloy and the factors controlling the upper critical field.
