Analyzer-based X-ray phase contrast imaging using the forward-diffracted o-beam in a few-millimetre-thick Bragg-case asymmetrically cut crystal

An analyzer-based X-ray phase contrast imaging experiment employing the forward-diffracted o-beam in a few-millimetre-thick Bragg-case asymmetrically cut analyzer crystal has been implemented and tested in a geometry similar to that used in conventional radiography. The high angular stability requirements were overcome using specially designed crystals and a closed-loop feedback intensity system, monitoring the intensity of the diffracted h-beam. Analyzer-based images (ABis) taken at different angular positions on the forward-diffracted o-beam rocking curve show different contrasts, as expected. However, the ABis did not show sharp borders. This was closely investigated by X-ray topography and Δ d / d mapping and was attributed to the stresses caused by the analyzer crystal's own weight in the bulk. Further investigation of the crystal design using finite element analysis coupled with dynamical theory of X-ray diffraction is envisaged.

Emittance Measurements with Wire Scanners in the Fermilab Side-coupled Linac

The Fermilab Side-Coupled Linac accelerates H-beam from 116 MeV to 400 MeV through seven 805 MHz modules. Twelve wire scanners are present in the Side Coupled Linac and four are present in the transfer line between the Linac and the Booster synchrotron ring. These wire scanners act as important diagnostic instruments to directly collect information on the beam's transverse distribution. The manipulation of the conditions of wire scanner data collection enables further characterization of the beamline, such as calculating emittance and the Twiss parameters of the beam at select regions, which we present here.

Multi-beam operation of LANSCE accelerator facility

The Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) accelerator facility has been in operation for 50 years performing important scientific support for national security. The unique feature of the LANSCE accelerator facility is multi-beam operation, delivering beams to five experimental areas. The near-term plans are to replace obsolete and almost end-of-life systems of the LANSCE linear accelerator with a modern 100-MeV Front End with significant improvement in beam quality. This paper summarizes experimental results obtained during the operation of the LANSCE accelerator facility and considers plans to expand the performance of the accelerator for near- and long-term operations.
