Machining Graphite Specimens from Sub- Blocks for Baseline Characterization

The Advanced Reactor Technologies (ART) Baseline Graphite Characterization program at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is performing a comprehensive evaluation of inter-billet variations in as-produced nuclear-grade graphite. To accomplish this, over 500 mechanical test specimens are machined from a single billet. A typical graphite billet is approximately 6 feet long by 2 feet in diameter or 2 ft square and weighs approximately 1500 pounds. Initially the full-size billets are pre-sectioned into sub-blocks that can be easily handled and shipped. In this SOW, 44 pre-labeled sub-blocks will be machined into mechanical test specimens by the supplier. These sub-blocks are supplied and shipped by the purchaser to the supplier.

Summary of Graphite Data Stored within NDMAS

The Graphite Technology Development Project provides data to support the design of graphite core components within specific reactor service conditions of the next generation of high-temperature, gas-cooled nuclear reactors. Physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of nuclear grade graphite were characterized for specimens that were unirradiated, irradiated, and irradiated under various stress conditions. The material properties include diameter, length, mass, density, compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, modulus, resistivity, thermal diffusivity, and thermal expansion coefficient. Baseline graphite specimens are unirradiated from different grades (2114, IG-110, NBG-17, NBG-18, and PCEA) and different types used in different characterization tests (compressive, flexural, tensile, one-inch cylinder, and quarter-inch cylinder). The Advanced Graphite Creep (AGC) irradiation specimens are from a much larger number of grades and cylinder types (creep, piggyback, and pencil). For baseline graphite, characterization data for 7,756 specimens extracted from thirteen graphite billets were captured to the NDMAS database. For AGC experiments, four irradiation campaigns have been completed: AGC-1, AGC-2, AGC-3, and AGC-4. The ongoing HDG-1 (High-Dose Graphite) experiment, which began irradiation with Cycle 168B on August 26, 2020, includes specimens previously irradiated in AGC-2 in addition to the specimens originally destined for AGC-5.. Besides the characterization data, the AGC data includes irradiation monitoring and physics data representing the irradiation conditions of AGC specimens. Currently, all data for AGC-1, AGC-2, and AGC-3 have been captured to the NDMAS database. Only AGC-4 pre-irradiation and irradiation monitoring data have been captured, and HDG-1 pre-irradiation data are in process of being captured for unirradiated specimens. To date, a total of 38,149 material property records have been captured into NDMAS database for baseline and AGC specimens. All characterization data are qualified for use according to their perspective data verification reports. For the AGC irradiation campaigns, a total of 41,502 qualified physics calculation records were added for AGC-1, AGC-2, and AGC-3. Finally, a total of 173,698,505 AGC irradiation monitoring data records (thermocouple temperature, gas flow rate, gas pressure, gas moisture, applied load, and specimen displacement) have been captured to NDMAS; the majority of those records (~94%) are qualified data records.

Baseline Characterization Database Verification Report ? NBG-17 Billet V104

The purpose of this report is to present data collected in the Baseline Graphite Characterization Program, which is directly tasked with supporting the Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL’s) research and development efforts on the Advanced Reactor Technologies (ART) Program. This program populates a comprehensive database that reflects the baseline properties of nuclear-grade graphite regarding individual grade, billet, and position within individual billets. The physical- and mechanical-property information being collected will be transferred to the Nuclear Data Management and Analysis System (NDMAS), and that database will help populate the handbook of property data available to member nations of the Generation-IV International Forum. Transfer of these data from the applicable technical lead to the dissemination databases available to other end users requires a full review of the test procedures and data-collection efforts through an analysis of the multiple summary spreadsheets and values being collected. This report represents the analysis for NBG-17 Billet V104 and facilitates release of associated data to the NDMAS custodians. Millions of raw data points have been collected during testing and quantification analyses for these billets. The summary scalar property values and supplementary traceability data are collected into comprehensive spreadsheets. Data sets are composed of single billets of graphite for any given grade, organized by mechanical test-specimen type, and further subdivided into individual spreadsheet tabs according to the specific test or evaluation being performed. A direct analysis of properties was not conducted, and this report does not provide information on the validity or performance characteristics of the graphite itself. Rather, this report is intended as a verification of the completeness of actual data collected in accordance with PLN-3467, “Baseline Graphite Characterization Plan: Electromechanical Testing,” [1] and PLN-3348 “Graphite Mechanical Testing” [2] and their representation of the measurement and test results with sole regard to the graphite billets under evaluation.

Sectioning of NBG-17 Graphite Billet

The Advanced Reactor Technologies (ART) Baseline Graphite Characterization program at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is performing a comprehensive evaluation of inter-billet variations in as-produced nuclear-grade graphite. Before graphite test specimens are machined, the full-size billets must be pre-sectioned into sub-blocks that can be more easily handled and shipped. As manufactured, NBG-17 billets are rectangular in shape, nearly 6 feet in length, and may exceed 1,500 pounds in weight. Sectioning of these billets must be accomplished via a supplier that is capable of handling and cutting the billets into individual slabs and quartering these slabs into sub-blocks. Billets will be pre-labeled by the Purchaser prior to leaving controlled storage such that traceability of any individual sub-block is never lost during sectioning operations.

Performance of Lithium-Ion Batteries with 3D Printed Anodes and Compressible Carbon Structures

Carbon scaffolds have been shown to improve the performance of Li metal anodes in Li-ion batteries by acting as conductive hosts for Li metal plating and stripping. The scaffolds provide a more uniform electric field, and their 3D geometry enables smaller diffusion paths for the Li ions. In this project, several different types of carbon lattices were 3D printed, mechanically tested, and analyzed in coin cells. Planar and 3D printed graphite coatings were evaluated as the baseline, since graphite is a common anode material. The results showed that implementing a 3D graphite lattice into a coin cell improved the Li plating and stripping efficiency compared to the planar coating. However, since graphite can intercalate Li ions, other carbon materials were also explored that should act as better hosts for Li plating/stripping. To improve the compressibility of these non-graphite carbon scaffolds, five different carbon ink formulations were 3D printed in lattice configurations. SEM imaging and compression testing showed that both the final dimensions and the compressibility of the carbon lattices depended on the type of carbon precursors used. The two most suitable compositions were found to be those made with graphene oxide-resorcinol formaldehyde and graphene oxide-ammonium hydroxide. In the future, these formulations will be further refined to increase their mechanical strength, and their performance as scaffold hosts for Li metal anodes will be evaluated in coin cells.

Status on Development of Graphite Analytical Tool (GAT)

The DOE-ART Graphite R&D program has been generating significant amounts of irradiated and unirradiated graphite data since 2006 when the program was part of the DOE NGNP (Next Generation Nuclear Plant) Project. This data includes critical irradiation creep and irradiated material property changes from the Advanced Graphite Creep (AGR) experiment as well as significant amounts of data on unirradiated material property values on several current nuclear graphite grades (Baseline program). Previously, Idaho National Laboratory has developed an internal analysis tool to assist with analysis of the unirradiated and irradiated data. The Graphite Analytical Tool (GAT) is intended to provide easy access to the graphite data in the form of comparing unirradiated and irradiated material property changes, comparison of material property differences between various nuclear graphite grades, and illustrate trends within the irradiated and unirradiated data generated within the DOE-ART Graphite R&D program. This report summarizes the progress to-date on the development of this analytical tool.
