Materials Data on GdPS by Materials Project

GdPS crystallizes in the orthorhombic Pnma space group. The structure is three-dimensional. there are two inequivalent Gd3+ sites. In the first Gd3+ site, Gd3+ is bonded in a 9-coordinate geometry to four equivalent P1- and five S2- atoms. There are two shorter (3.13 Å) and two longer (3.15 Å) Gd–P bond lengths. There are a spread of Gd–S bond distances ranging from 2.79–2.92 Å. In the second Gd3+ site, Gd3+ is bonded in a 9-coordinate geometry to four equivalent P1- and five S2- atoms. There are two shorter (2.93 Å) and two longer (3.12 Å) Gd–P bond lengths. There are a spread of Gd–S bond distances ranging from 2.77–2.87 Å. P1- is bonded in a distorted hexagonal planar geometry to four Gd3+ and two equivalent P1- atoms. There are one shorter (2.24 Å) and one longer (2.27 Å) P–P bond lengths. There are two inequivalent S2- sites. In the first S2- site, S2- is bonded to five Gd3+ atoms to form a mixture of distorted edge and corner-sharing SGd5 trigonal bipyramids. In the second S2- site, S2- is bonded to five Gd3+ atoms to form a mixture of distorted edge and corner-sharing SGd5 trigonal bipyramids.

Design Considerations for High-Voltage Insulated Gate Drive Power Supply for 10-kV SiC MOSFET Applied in Medium-Voltage Converter

High-performance gate drive power supply (GDPS) plays a crucial role in ensuring the reliability and safety of the gate driver for power semiconductor devices. This article focuses on the design of a high-voltage-insulated GDPS for the 10-kV silicon carbide MOSFET in medium-voltage (MV) application. Design considerations, including insulation scheme, high-voltage-insulated transformer design, and load voltage regulation scheme, are proposed. In addition, the performance of the secondary-side-regulated (SSR) GDPS and that of the primary-side-regulated (PSR) GDPS are compared for several aspects, including interwinding capacitance, load voltage regulation rate, conversion efficiency, and hardware complexity. Finally, an SSR GDPS and a PSR GDPS, with an insulation voltage of 20 kV, are built in the lab. Furthermore, the test results demonstrate that the PSR GDPS is more preferable because of lower interwinding capacitance, lower load voltage regulation rate, higher conversion efficiency, and simpler control circuit.

Laser-direct-drive fusion target design with a high- Z gradient-density pusher shell

Laser-direct-drive fusion target designs with solid deuterium-tritium (DT) fuel, a high-Z gradient-density pusher shell (GDPS), and a Au-coated foam layer have been investigated through both 1D and 2D radiation-hydrodynamic simulations. Compared with conventional low-Z ablators and DT-push-on-DT targets, these GDPS targets possess certain advantages of being instability-resistant implosions that can be high adiabat (α ≥ 8) and low hot-spot and pusher-shell convergence (CR hs ≈ 22 and CR PS ≈ 17), and have a low implosion velocity (v imp < 3 × 10 7 cm/s). Using symmetric drive with laser energies of 1.9 to 2.5 MJ, 1D LILAC simulations of these GDPS implosions can result in neutron yields corresponding to >~50–MJ energy, even with reduced laser absorption due to the cross-beam energy transfer (CBET) effect. Two-dimensional DRACO simulations show that these GDPS targets can still ignite and deliver neutron yields from 4 to ~10 MJ even if CBET is present, while traditional DT-push-on-DT targets normally fail due to the CBET-induced reduction of ablation pressure. If CBET is mitigated, these GDPS targets are expected to produce neutron yields of >20 MJ at a driven laser energy of ~2 MJ. Here are the key factors behind the robust ignition and moderate energy gain of such GDPS implosions are as follows: (1) The high initial density of the high-Z pusher shell can be placed at a very high adiabat while the DT fuel is maintained at a relatively low-entropy state; therefore, such implosions can still provide enough compression ρR >1 g/cm 2 for sufficient confinement; (2) the high-Z layer significantly reduces heat-conduction loss from the hot spot since thermal conductivity scales as ~1/Z; and (3) possible radiation trapping may offer an additional advantage for reducing energy loss from such high-Z targets.

Design and Demonstration of an 850 V dc to 13.8 kV ac 100 kW Three-phase Four-wire Power Conditioning System Converter Using 10 kV SiC MOSFETs

In this paper, an 850 V dc to 13.8 kV ac 100 kW modular multilevel three-phase four-wire dc/ac converter based on 10 kV SiC MOSFETs is designed and demonstrated. The design considerations of key components, including the dc-link, device cooling, gate driver, isolated gate driver power supply (GDPS), medium voltage (MV) ac filter inductor, MV and medium frequency transformer, and the mechanical design are discussed. Two converters are designed, and two prototypes are developed, to study the converter paralleling operation and scalability. Both converters are fully tested up to their voltage and power ratings. However, the two converters are not identical. Based on the design and test results of the first converter, the MV power stage, transformer design, GDPS, as well as the low voltage power stage in the second converter are improved for smaller size and/or higher efficiency. Compared to the version 1 converter, the version 2 converter achieves 49% volume reduction and 2 percentage point efficiency improvement, with a peak efficiency of 98.4% at the rated power.

A Low-Profile Gate Power Supply for a SiC Phase Leg with Reduced Isolation Capacitance

Gate driver power supply (GDPS) for SiC devices needs power to 5 W as the switching frequency increases to hundreds of kHz. Resonant converters with planar magnetics demand GDPS with a lower profile. Also, the isolation capacitance (Cp) needs to be minimized for SiC devices with high dv/dt. This paper proposed a planar 5 W*2, 20 V isolated gate power supply for a SiC phase leg in the EV traction inverter. Air-core magnetics with PCB windings are applied for low profile. A single-switch resonant Class-E topology is proposed with zero-voltage switching at 6.78 MHz to minimize the magnetics footprint for a 6 pF Cp. Compared with commercial power supplies with similar power, the proposed power supply reduced the profile and Cp by more than half without sacrificing its efficiency and power density.

Insulator‐to‐Metal Transition and Isotropic Gigantic Magnetoresistance in Layered Magnetic Semiconductors

Magnetotransport, the response of electrical conduction to external magnetic field, acts as an important tool to reveal fundamental concepts behind exotic phenomena and plays a key role in enabling spintronic applications. Magnetotransport is generally sensitive to magnetic field orientations. In contrast, efficient and isotropic modulation of electronic transport, which is useful in technology applications such as omnidirectional sensing, is rarely seen, especially for pristine crystals. Here a strategy is proposed to realize extremely strong modulation of electron conduction by magnetic field which is independent of field direction. GdPS, a layered antiferromagnetic semiconductor with resistivity anisotropies, supports a field-driven insulator-to-metal transition with a paradoxically isotropic gigantic negative magnetoresistance insensitive to magnetic field orientations. This isotropic magnetoresistance originates from the combined effects of a near-zero spin–orbit coupling of Gd 3+ -based half-filling ƒ-electron system and the strong on-site f – d exchange coupling in Gd atoms. These results not only provide a novel material system with extraordinary magnetotransport that offers a missing block for antiferromagnet-based ultrafast and efficient spintronic devices, but also demonstrate the key ingredients for designing magnetic materials with desired transport properties for advanced functionalities.

Data-Driven Event Detection of Power Systems Based on Unequal-Interval Reduction of PMU Data and Local Outlier Factor

With the deployment of phasor measurement units (PMU) and wide area measurement system (WAMS), it is feasible to have an insight into the events occurred in power systems based on measured data. Thus, a novel data-driven algorithm based on local outlier factor (LOF) is proposed in this work to detect and locate events in power systems using reduced PMU data. First, the unequal-interval reduction method is presented to reduce the scale of PMU data in sub-stations and reconstruct it in master station of WAMS, which can relieve the burden of communication systems. Then, principle component analysis (PCA)-based similarity search method is proposed to measure the differences of operation state between any two buses. Next, LOF is presented to detect the abnormal events in power systems, and employed to determine the region of the event source. Finally, six cases from the Western electricity coordinating council (WECC) 179-bus power system, a case from the South China power system (SCPS), and a case from the Guangdong power system (GDPS) are utilized to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Overall, the results show that proposed algorithm is effective and can be applied to event detection, event location, and online monitoring, which can enhance the situation awareness ability of power system operators.
