Electrical screening procedure for solid ionic conductors

An electrical screening method has been developed for preliminary evaluation of polycrystalline specimens of candidates for use as solid ionic conductive electrolytes in batteries. The procedure measures dielectric loss and capacitance, from which are calculated an ac conductivity attributed provisionally to ions and an activation energy for that conductivity. Electronic conductivity is directly measured. The screening procedure applied to sodium beta-alumina yielded acceptable values for conductivity and activation energy.

Satellite monitoring of sea surface pollution

The author has identified the following significant results. Image processing techniques developed are well adapted to the exploration and isolation of local areas which exhibit small temperature differences between themselves and their surroundings. In the worst case of imagery of small areal extent of sea surface having no coastal boundary in the area, there is yet no method of distinguishing unambiguously an oil spill from fog, cloud, the effect produced by shallow sediments, or the effects of naturally occuring thermal fronts. In the case of uniform slicks of liquid North Sea oil in still air, laboratory simulation experiments show that, for oil thicknesses in excess of 1 or 2 mm, there is, under equilibrium conditions, little dependence of oil surface temperature on the thickness of the oil layer. The surface temperature of oil is consistently higher than that of water, the difference being about 1 K at low values of relative humidity, but tending to increase as the relative humidity increases.

Conductivities of the ionic complexes of two cyclic polyethers

The conductivities of the solid potassium thiocyanate complex of both dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6 and dibenzo-18-crown-6 were measured at 300K (27 C). Saturated aqueous potassium thiocyanate and graphite were used as ion-transporting and ion-blocking electrodes, respectively. The ionic conductivity predominated for both samples, but it was many orders of magnitude smaller than the value previously reported. The ionic conductivity of the dicyclohexyl complex (the better conductor) was 0.000003 ohm/cm. Crown complexes, in general, do not appear promising as potassium ion solid electrolytes contrary to claims in the patent literature.

Thermal Decomposition of Some Linear Perfluoroalkanes in an Inconel Tube

The products of the pyrolysis reactions of perfluoropropane, perfluoroethane, and carbon tetrafluoride in an Inconel bomb are described. The values for the energy of activation and frequency factor for the first-order pyrolysis reactions are respectively: (1) 80 kcal. per mole and 2x10(exp14) sec.(exp-1) for perfluoropropane; (2) 53 kcal. per mole and 3x10(exp7) sec.(exp-1) for perfluoroethane; and (3) 96 kcal. per mole and 4x10(exp13) sec.(exp-1) for carbon tetrafluoride.

O2 reduction at the IFC orbiter fuel cell O2 electrode

O2 reduction Tafel data were obtained for the IFC Orbiter fuel cell O2 electrode (Au-10 percent Pt catalyst) at temperatures between 24 and 81 C. BET measurements gave an electrode surface area of about 2040 sq cm per sq cm of geometric area. The Tafel data could be fitted to three straight line regions. For current densities less than 0.001 A/sq cm, the slope was essentially independent of temperature with a value of about 0.032 V/decade. Above 0.001 A/sq cm, the two regions, designated in the present study as the 0.04 and 0.12 V/decate regions, were temperature dependent. The apparent energies of activation for these two regions were about 9.3 and 6.5 kcal/mol, respectively. Tafel data (1 atmosphere O2) were extrapolated to 120 C for predicting changes in overpotential with increasing temperature. A mechanism is presented for O2 reduction.
