Precise time and frequency intercomparison between NPL, India and PTB, Federal Republic of Germany via satellite symphonie-1

A time and frequency intercomparison experiment conducted using Earth stations in New Delhi, India and Raisting, FRG is described. The NPL clock was placed at New Delhi Earth Station and the Raisting Clock was calibrated with PTB/Primary standard via LORAN-C and travelling clocks. The random uncertainity of time comparisons, represented by two sample Allan Variance sigma (30 seconds), was less than 10 nanoseconds. The relative frequency difference between the NPL and Raisting Clocks, SNPL, RAIS, as measured over the 44 days period was found to be -15.7 x 10 to the -13th power. The relative frequency difference between PTB Primary Standard and Raisting Clock, SPTB, RAIS, during this period, was measured to be -22.8 x 10 to the -13th power. The relative frequency difference between NPL clock and PTB Primary Standard, SNPL, PTB, thus, is +7.1 x 10 to the -13th power. The clock rate (UTC, India) of +7.1 + or - 0.5 x 10 to the -13th power, agrees well with that obtained via VLF phase measurements over one year period and with USNO travelling clock time comparisons made in September, 1980.

Preliminary assessment of airborne imaging spectrometer and airborne thematic mapper data acquired for forest decline areas in the Federal Republic of Germany

This study evaluated the utility of data collected by the high-spectral resolution airborne imaging spectrometer (AIS-2, tree mode, spectral range 0.8-2.2 microns) and the broad-band Daedalus airborne thematic mapper (ATM, spectral range 0.42-13.0 micron) in assessing forest decline damage at a predominantly Scotch pine forest in the FRG. Analysis of spectral radiance values from the ATM and raw digital number values from AIS-2 showed that higher reflectance in the near infrared was characteristic of high damage (heavy chlorosis, limited needle loss) in Scotch pine canopies. A classification image of a portion of the AIS-2 flight line agreed very well with a damage assessment map produced by standard aerial photointerpretation techniques.

Living and Working in Space; IAA Man in Space Symposium, 9th, Cologne, Federal Republic of Germany, June 17-21, 1991, Selection of Papers

The present symposium on living and working in space encompasses the physiological responses of humans in space and biomedical support for the conditions associated with space travel. Specific physiological issues addressed include cerebral and sensorimotor functions, effects on the cardiovascular and respiratory system, musculoskeletal system, body fluid, hormones and electrolytes, and some orthostatic hypotension mechanisms as countermeasures. The biomedical support techniques examined include selection training, and care, teleoperation and artificial intelligence, robotic automation, bioregenerative life support, and toxic hazard risks in space habitats. Also addressed are determinants of orientation in microgravity, the hormonal control of body fluid metabolism, integrated human-machine intelligence in space machines, and material flow estimation in CELSS.

Regional quasigeoid determination in Northern Germany and comparison with GPS

For the northern part of the Federal Republic of Germany, new quasigeoid solutions were computed by least squares collocation and fast Fourier transformation (FFT) techniques using point and mean gravity data, a digital terrain model, and a global geopotential model. As severe accuracy limitations for precise regional quasigeoid determination come from global model uncertainties, different geopotential models were investigated by combining them with gravimetric data and comparing the quasigeoid heights with GPS and leveling. Optimum results were obtained by a global model tailored to gravity data in Europe. Collocation and FFT results based on this model agree well. The comparison with GPS and leveling yields rms discrepancies of + or - 2 cm over approximately 400 km range.

HELIOS - Co-operative solar probe.

In June 1969, the Federal Republic of Germany and the United States of America agreed on a joint cooperative solar probe project designated HELIOS. This basic agreement provides for the design, development, test and launch of two flight spacecraft (the first in mid-1974 and the second in late 1975) to within 0.3 AU of the sun. The primary purpose of the two spacecraft is to investigate the properties of and processes in interplanetary space in the direction of and close to the sun. In this technical paper, the scientific mission and German and American plans/design to accomplish this mission are presented by the German and United States Project Managers respectively. Emphasis is placed on the advanced technology required to successfully accomplish this mission.

Titan/Centaur D-1TTC-5 Helios B flight data report

The fourth operational flight of the newest NASA unmanned launch vehicle is reported. The spacecraft was the Helios B, the second of two solar probes designed and built by the Federal Republic of Germany. The primary mission objective, to place the Helios spacecraft on a heliocentric orbit in the ecliptic plane with a perihelion distance of 0.29 AU, was successfully accomplished. After successful injection of the Helios spacecraft, a series of experiments were performed with the Centaur stage to demonstrate its operational capabilities. All objectives of the extended mission phase were successfully met. This report presents the analysis of the launch vehicle flight data for the primary mission phase of the TC-5 flight.

Foreign technology summary of flight crucial flight control systems

A survey of foreign technology in flight crucial flight controls is being conducted to provide a data base for planning future research and technology programs. Only Free World countries were surveyed, and the primary emphasis was on Western Europe because that is where the most advanced technology resides. The survey includes major contemporary systems on operational aircraft, R&D flight programs, advanced aircraft developments, and major research and technology programs. The information was collected from open literature, personal communications, and a tour of several companies, government organizations, and research laboratories in the United Kingdom, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany. A summary of the survey results to date is presented.
