Materials Data on F2 by Materials Project

F2 crystallizes in the monoclinic C2/c space group. The structure is one-dimensional and consists of four F2 ribbons oriented in the (0, 1, 0) direction. F is bonded in a bent 150 degrees geometry to two equivalent F atoms. Both F–F bond lengths are 1.70 Å.

Vertical motions of the midlatitude F2 layer during magnetospheric substorms.

Use of ground-based ionosonde records from midlatitude stations during winter nights to study vertical motions of the F2 layer associated with magnetospheric substorms. The results show that during substorms the F2 layer is lifted upward in the premidnight sector and pushed downward in the postmidnight sector. These motions are interpreted in terms of E x B drifts, the electric field being eastward on the eveningside and westward on the morningside. The results emphasize the importance of substorm effects on the midlatitude F region and the potential of ground-based hf sounding techniques in studying magnetospheric substorms.

The dynamic F2-layer over Arecibo

The idealized 'servo' model of the ionospheric F2-layer of Rishbeth et al. (1978) is used to simulate the observed behavior of the daytime Fe-peak at Arecibo at sunspot minimum. The meridional pressure-gradient force associated with the meridional neutral-air wind is determined empirically. The local time variation during the day is found to be consistent with the semidiurnal variation given by the MSIS atmospheric model of Hedin et al. (1977). The values of the F2-layer loss and diffusion coefficients needed to match the data are broadly consistent with the MSIS model.

An improved algorithm for determining neutral winds from the height of the F2 peak electron density

The algorithm of Miller et al. (1986) for determining neutral winds in the thermosphere from the height of the F2 peak electron density is modified, making it possible to reduce the amount of computation time by two thirds. The improved algorithm also provides a more accurate reproduction of h(m)F2 by an ionospheric model than does the original algorithm. The winds obtained from the new algorithm were found to agree well with both the optical and radar measurements conducted at Arecibo on August 17-18, 1982.

How the effects of winds and electric fields in F2-layer storms vary with latitude and longitude - A theoretical study

The effects of thermospheric winds and electric fields on the ionospheric F2-layer are controlled by the geometry of the magnetic field, and so vary with latitude and longitude. A simple model of the daytime F2-layer is adopted and the effects at midlatitudes (25-65 deg geographic) of three processes that accompany geomagnetic storms: (1) thermospheric changes due to auroral heating; (2) equatorward winds that tend to cancel the quiet-day poleward winds; and (3) the penetration of magnetospheric electric fields are studied. At +/- 65 deg, the effects of heating and electric fields are strongest in the longitudes toward which the geomagnetic dipole is tilted, i.e., the North American and the South Indian Ocean sectors. Because of the proximity of the geomagnetic equator to the East Asian and South American sectors, the reverse is true at +/- 25 deg.

Modeling the Arecibo nighttime F2 layer. I - Overhead properties

The paper extends the servo model of Rishbeth et al. (1978) and applies it to fit the height and plasma density of the nighttime F2 layer, as measured from the Arecibo Observatory during solar maximum by Burnside (1984). The model equations are integrated numerically to fit the observed peak height and density. The model adequately reproduces the observed behavior of the F2 layer. The additional terms in the extended servo-height equation affect the peak height computation by no more than 10 percent on average. The applied current is generally eastward though it becomes westward during the postmidnight collapse or descent of the layer. Differences between model and optically measured meridional wind speeds appear to be related to the presence of large vertical shears in the wind. The observed peak density can be reproduced to within 20 to 40 percent accuracy. Variable plasmaspheric fluxes of the order of 10 exp 13/sq m s contribute to the maintenance and variability of the nighttime peak density.

Extraction of Proton and Deuteron F2 Structure Function from Inclusive Electron-Nucleon Scattering at Large Bjorken-X

The E12-10-002 experiment measured the inclusive electron-nucleon cross section at Jeferson Lab at large Q2 (up to 16 GeV2) and a large range of x (up to 0.99). The data is analyzed and the cross sections are extracted for hydrogen and deuterium. Then the F2 structure function is extracted for hydrogen and deuterium. Finally the quark-hadron duality is tested for the proton F2 structure function for the previous world data and this experiment.

Genetic analyses of leaf traits in an interspecific Zoysia japonica × Zoysia matrella F2 population

Zoysiagrass (Zoysia spp.) is an important warm-season turfgrass cultivated across tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions of the world. The genus is characterized by the presence of salt-secreting glands on the adaxial leaf surface, which contribute to its high salt tolerance. In this study, we analyzed an interspecific F2 population, derived from selfing an F1 from a cross between Z. japonica acc. Meyer and Z. matrella acc. PI 231146, for variation in adaxial salt gland density, leaf width, and vein count. Using composite interval mapping with a previously constructed genetic map as a framework, we identified three quantitative trait loci (QTL) for leaf width, two QTL for vein count, and two QTL for salt gland density. We complemented the QTL analysis with bulked segregant RNA-seq (BSR-seq) to identify shared genomic regions and candidate genes for leaf width and salt gland density. BSR-seq identified four trait-associated regions, but only a single region identified for leaf width on Chr08 overlapped with a QTL for the same trait. We highlight putative candidate genes underlying the leaf width and salt gland density QTL and discuss their potential roles in leaf development. Together, the QTL and candidate genes provide an important resource for breeding stress-resilient Zoysia germplasm.

DECOVALEX-2023: Task F2-Salt Final Report

The subject of Task F of DECOVALEX-2023 concerns performance assessment modelling of radioactive waste disposal in deep mined repositories. The primary objectives of Task F are to build confidence in the models, methods, and software used for performance assessment (PA) of deep geologic nuclear waste repositories, and/or to bring to the fore additional research and development needed to improve PA methodologies. In Task F2-(salt), these objectives have been accomplished through staged development and comparison of the models and methods used by participating teams in their PA frameworks. Coupled-process submodels and deterministic simulations of the entire PA model for a reference scenario for waste disposal in domal salt have been conducted. The task specification has been updated continuously since the initiation of the project to reflect the staged development of the conceptual repository model and performance metrics.
