Evaluation of the Performance of the SAVY Container Subjected to Various Impact Events using Finite Element Methods

The SAVY container is a Safety Class Design Feature utilized both inside engineered features and outside engineered features (e.g. gloveboxes) at TA-55 Plutonium Facility Building 4. These containers were certified as low damage ratio containers by demonstrating their ability to retain material after exposure to impacts and elevated temperatures resulting from a design basis seismic event. Original testing of the SAVY did not evaluate the effects of various facility specific insults to the SAVY while within a DOT Type A Container, caused either by design basis accident or an operational mishap. These insults include: 1. Impact of a structural I-beam (drum upright & drum on side); 2. Impact of a section of Positive Pressure Chilled Water Pipe (PPCWS); 3. Forklift fork tine impact; 4. Fuel truck impact. Abaqus Explicit Dynamics Finite Element Analysis was performed on a nested SAVY/DOT Type 7A container configuration to assess the structural integrity of the SAVY under the accident conditions listed.

The Structural Evaluation Test Unit (SETU) Benchmark Test Results

A series of extensively instrumented tests was performed on the Structural Evaluation Test Unit in the early 1990s. The purpose of these tests was to determine the response of a minimally designed cask to impacts that were more severe than the design basis impact. This test series provides an excellent opportunity for benchmarking explicit dynamic finite element analysis programs for behaviors that may be experienced by casks during regulatory and extra-regulatory impact events. This report provides the results of the four tests that were conducted. It is meant to go along with a companion report that defines the benchmark problem and gives the locations for the instrumentation and inspection points.

Toward large-scale simulation of residual stress and distortion in wire and arc additive manufacturing

In this study, we aim to advance the structural analysis of wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) by considering the thermomechanical features inherent in direct energy deposition. Simulation approaches including the iterative substructure method (ISM), dynamic mesh refining method (DMRM), and graphics processing unit (GPU) based explicit finite element method (FEM) were developed for accelerating additive manufacturing stress analysis that is very time consuming by conventional numerical methods. ISM and DMRM take advantage of the strong nonlinearity phenomenon near the moving heat source by reducing the global iterations and refining the local mesh, respectively. In addition to the use of GPUs, the explicit FEM is accelerated by a time scaling technique based on the inherent strain concept. The residual stress and distortion of two large builds were analyzed, showing very consistent numerical results and good agreement with experiments. Compared with the commercial software Abaqus, the novel approaches reduced the computational cost substantially without compromising accuracy. The GPU code showed the highest computational efficiency (30~70×), while DMRM and ISM had acceleration factors of 9× and 3×, respectively. Finally, such high-fidelity modeling approaches will be very useful for building up a digital twin of WAAM to reduce development time and cost.

MECHANICAL SHOCK AND VIBRATION ANALYSIS OF SPENT NUCLEAR FUEL CARRIED BY THE ATLAS RAILCAR

Researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory have completed a structural-dynamic analysis of spent nuclear fuel subjected to the mechanical shock and vibration environment that is anticipated during normal conditions of transport in casks carried by the Atlas railcar. The Atlas railcar is a new railcar design that is being developed specifically for the purpose of carrying spent nuclear fuel casks. The analysis used best-estimate railcar dynamics models of the Atlas railcar and considered 17 different spent nuclear fuel transportation cask systems, representing the current fleet of cask options. This work used NUCARS, a specialized railcar dynamics explicit finite element code to calculate railcar dynamic response to prescribed speeds and track configurations. The railcar dynamics models provided cask transient motion for a wide range of speeds and track conditions, generating a relatively large database of potential cask motion. All of the cask motion transients were then applied as loading conditions to LS-DYNA structural-dynamic models of a single fuel rod. The analyses predict that the Equipos Nucleares S.A./U.S. Department of Energy (ENSA/DOE) multimodal transportation test of 2017 provided a relatively stronger vibration environment than is expected from the Atlas railcar. This paper describes the analysis methods, the analysis results, and compares the results of the Atlas transportation analysis to the test results and analyses of the ENSA/DOE multimodal transportation test of 2017.

Explicit Dynamic Impact Analysis of the Building 3525 Packages

The safe transport and handling of radioactive material containers is critical to ensure the protection of personnel, facilities, and the environment. Accidental drops during handling pose a significant hazard, necessitating robust design and analysis to mitigate potential consequences. This study presents an explicit dynamic impact analysis of two container designs, the Baby Sugarman and the Core Conduction Cooldown Test Facility (CCCTF) Tall Boy, used in Building 3525 at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The analysis employed nonlinear finite element modeling in LS-DYNA to simulate free-fall impacts from a height of 16.5 ft across eight critical orientations. The study evaluated deformation, strain failure, and shielding integrity under these extreme conditions. Results demonstrated that both designs maintain structural integrity, with no breaches or loss of shielding under specified administrative controls. Notably, a maximum shielding loss of 10 lbs was observed during a top-corner drop, highlighting the need to limit drop heights to less than 1 ft for certain orientations. These findings underscore the effectiveness of engineering controls and design measures in preventing containment breaches and ensuring compliance with safety requirements. This work provides a comprehensive methodology for impact analysis, contributing valuable insights to the field of radioactive materials packaging and transportation safety.

HOSS: an implementation of the combined finite-discrete element method

Nearly thirty years since its inception, the combined finite-discrete element method (FDEM) has made remarkable strides in becoming a mainstream analysis tool within the field of Computational Mechanics. FDEM was developed to effectively “bridge the gap” between two disparate Computational Mechanics approaches known as the finite and discrete element meth-ods. At Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) researchers developed the Hybrid Optimization Software Suite (HOSS) as a hybrid multi-physics platform, based on FDEM, for the simulation of solid material behavior complemented with the latest technological enhancements for full fluid–solid interaction. Furthermore, in HOSS, several newly developed FDEM algorithms have been implemented that yield more accurate material deformation formulations, inter-particle interaction solvers, and fracture and fragmentation solutions. Additionally, an explicit computational fluid dynamics solver and a novel fluid–solid interaction algorithms have been fully integrated (as opposed to coupled) into the HOSS’ solid mechanical solver, allowing for the study of an even wider range of problems. Advancements such as this are leading HOSS to become a tool of choice for multi-physics problems. Finally, HOSS has been successfully applied by a myriad of researchers for analysis in rock mechanics, oil and gas industries, engineering application (structural, mechanical and biomedical engineering), mining, blast loading, high velocity impact, as well as seismic and acoustic analysis. This paper intends to summarize the latest development and application efforts for HOSS.
