Drastic enhancement of magnetic critical temperature and amorphization in topological magnet EuSn 2 P 2 under pressure

High pressure is an effective tool to induce exotic quantum phenomena in magnetic topological insulators by controlling the interplay of magnetic order and topological state. This work presents a comprehensive high-pressure study of the crystal structure and magnetic ground state up to 62 GPa in an intrinsic topological magnet EuSn 2 P 2 . With a combination of high resolution X-ray diffraction, 151 Eu synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, molecular orbital calculations, and electronic band structure calculations, it has been revealed that pressure drives EuSn 2 P 2 from a rhombohedral crystal to an amorphous phase at 36 GPa accompanied by a fourfold enhancement of magnetic ordering temperature. In the pressure-induced amorphous phase, Eu ions take an intermediate valence state. The drastic enhancement of magnetic ordering temperature from 30 K at ambient pressure to 130 K at 41.2 GPa resulting from Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida (RKKY) interactions likely attributes to the stronger Eu–Sn interaction at high pressure. These rich results demonstrate that EuSn 2 P 2 is an ideal platform to study the correlation of the enhanced RKKY interactions, disordered lattice, intermediate valence, and topological state.

$A$-type antiferromagnetic order and magnetic phase diagram of the trigonal Eu spin-$\frac{7}{2}$ triangular-lattice compound $\mathrm{EuSn_2As_2}$

The trigonal compound EuSn 2 As 2 was recently discovered to host Dirac surface states within the bulk band gap and orders antiferromagnetically below the N´eel temperature T N = 23.5(2) K from neutron-diffraction measurements. Here the magnetic ground state of single-crystal EuSn 2 As 2 and the evolution of its properties versus temperature T and applied magnetic field H are reported. Included are the zero-field single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements versus T, magnetization M(H, T), magnetic susceptibility χ(H, T) = M(H,T)/H, heat capacity C p (H, T), and electrical resistivity ρ(H, T) measurements. The neutron-diffraction and χ(T) measurements both indicate a collinear A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure below T N , where the Eu 2+ spins S = 7/2 in a triangular ab-plane layer (hexagonal unit cell) are aligned ferromagnetically in the ab plane whereas the spins in adjacent Eu planes along the c axis are aligned antiferromagnetically. The χ(H ab , T) and χ(Hc, T) data together indicate a smooth crossover between the collinear AFM alignment and an unknown magnetic structure at H ≈ 0.12 T. Dynamic spin fluctuations up to 60 K are evident in the χ(T), Cp(T) and ρ(H, T) measurements, a temperature that is more than twice T N . The ρ(H, T) is consistent with a low-carrier-density metal with strong magnetic scattering and does not reflect a contribution of the topological state of the material as reported earlier by ARPES measurements. This observation is consistent with previous ones for other topological insulators where the chemical potential is above the Dirac point so that ARPES readily detects the surface states, whereas resistivity measurements do not. Finally, the magnetic phase diagrams for both H ∥ c and H ∥ ab in the H-T plane are constructed from the T N (H), χ(H, T), Cp(H, T), and ρ(H, T) data.

Materials Data on EuSn by Materials Project

EuSn crystallizes in the orthorhombic Cmcm space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Eu is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to seven equivalent Sn atoms. There are a spread of Eu–Sn bond distances ranging from 3.37–3.57 Å. Sn is bonded in a 9-coordinate geometry to seven equivalent Eu and two equivalent Sn atoms. Both Sn–Sn bond lengths are 2.97 Å.

Observation of surface ferromagnons in the axion-insulating phase of the antiferromagnetic topological insulator EuSn 2⁢ As 2

We report the study of spin dynamics of Eu 2+ in the antiferromagnetic axion topological insulator EuSn 2 ⁢As 2 by means of antiferromagnetic resonance at 9.34 GHz. Below the Néel temperature (𝑇 N ), two types of resonance modes, the conventional bulk antiferromagnetic resonance and additional surface ferromagnetic resonance, are observed. The latter turns out to be characteristic of the axion-insulating phase. Above 𝑇 N , we prove the existence of a Kosterlitz-Thouless scenario that is relevant for the spin relaxation in the Eu 2+ layers. The absence of Korringa relaxation indicates the strong confinement of the conduction electrons at the Fermi level to the SnAs layers.
