Tailoring the Physicochemical Properties of Nb Thin Films via Surface Engineering Methods

The modification of surface oxide layers formed on niobium (Nb) thin films via chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) and accelerated neutral atom beam (ANAB) processing provides a promising route toward tailoring their emergent properties and performance when used as superconducting qubits. Here, in this study, we show that CMP- and ANAB-formed Nb oxides are significantly thinner and smoother than the native oxide, as revealed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy. Scanning TEM and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy along with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy identified an oxidation gradient within the native and surface-engineered oxides. The topside layer is dominated by Nb 5+ (Nb 2 O 5 ), with various Nb suboxides present closer to the oxide/metal interface. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) depth profiling confirmed the presence of an oxygen content gradient and demonstrated the enhanced resistance of the CMP- and ANAB-formed oxides to oxygen surface exchange and subsequent diffusion via 18 O 2 isotopic labeling experiments. ToF-SIMS also identified an interfacial layer containing trapped hydrogen (H)-containing species at the Nb oxide/metal interface. In situ ToF-SIMS and TEM revealed migration of the H/OH interfacial layer coinciding with decomposition of the surface oxide. Furthermore, our density functional theory calculations indicated that both H from moisture present in ambient air and bulk H in Nb films tend to segregate at the interface. These findings underscore the importance of understanding surface oxidation mechanisms, hydrogen incorporation, and their impact on the designed functionalities of Nb-based devices.

System and method for engineered ceramic packages for use in fluid treatment technologies

The present disclosure relates to a method for making a ceramic mini-tube configured for use in a fluid modification system. The method involves using an electrospinning system to receive a quantity of precursor solution. The electrospinning system creates an electric field which causes the precursor solution, when emitted, to be stretched into a fiber jet. The fiber jet is deposited on a collector resulting in a fiber mat. The fiber mat is removed from the collector, wherein the fiber mat is formed into a shape. The fiber mat is further processed so that the fiber mat retains a desired shape. A heat treatment operation is then performed to convert the fiber mat into a ceramic structure having the desired shape.

Performance evaluation of automated data-driven feature extraction and selection methods for practical and scalable building energy consumption prediction models

Here, this study quantifies the impact of automated feature engineering methods (feature extraction and selection) on the quality and accuracy of machine learning models that predict building energy consumption. The case study compares model performance for three main scenarios: baseline (no feature extraction and selection), feature extraction only, and feature extraction combined with feature selection (filter and/or wrapper methods) for fully trained machine learning models for 200 metered/sub-metered energy measurements across 118 real buildings. For consistency, the same machine learning model architecture (a black box deep learning neural network with probabilistic forecast output) was used for all scenarios. Based on results, all feature engineering methods provided noticeable prediction accuracy improvements (e.g., 29%-68% median prediction improvement) compared to baseline scenarios. However, in this application, feature selection methods provide little practical value due to their limited performance gains and high computational cost. Smarter algorithm development supported by better computational environments will be needed before feature selection methods can reliably and efficiently improve predictive model performance.

Chapter 14 - Reliability of Wind Turbines

The global wind energy industry has grown at a fast pace during the past half-decade. Advancements from design and manufacturing to operation and maintenance have led to reduced capital and maintenance costs, which make wind power an indispensable source for a comprehensive solution to global electricity needs. Once wind turbines are installed, the opportunity to lower wind power costs is mainly through improved operation and maintenance practices. Modern wind turbines are equipped with tens or hundreds of measurement channels and are generating an abundance of data, with lot of efforts being put into data analysis by both the research community and the industry. One type of analysis is through the exploration of reliability engineering methods based on readily available data or maintenance records collected at typical wind power plants. If adopted and conducted appropriately, these analyses can quickly save operation and maintenance costs in a potentially impactful manner. The wind industry has adopted this discipline more broadly in recent years. This chapter discusses wind turbine reliability by highlighting the methodology of reliability engineering life data analysis. It first briefly discusses the fundamentals of wind turbine reliability and the current industry status. Then, the reliability engineering method for life analysis, including data collection, model development, and forecasting, is presented in detail and illustrated through two case studies. The chapter concludes with some remarks on potential opportunities to improve wind turbine reliability. An owner and operator's perspective is taken and mechanical components are used to exemplify the potential benefits of reliability engineering analysis to improve wind turbine reliability and availability.

Leveraging large language models to address data scarcity in machine learning for graphene synthesis

Machine learning in experimental materials science faces significant challenges due to the scarcity of data, which are costly and time-consuming to generate, particularly when relying on in-house experiments. Literature data mining offers a potential solution but introduces issues like mixed data quality, inconsistent formats, and non-uniform reporting of synthesis parameters, resulting in partially missing and heterogeneous features across the dataset. Here, we propose data imputation and feature engineering methods that employ pre-trained large language models (LLMs) to enhance machine learning performance on scarce, heterogeneous datasets, demonstrated on graphene CVD synthesis data and the ML-HydPARK hydrogen storage dataset. GPT models perform data imputation via tailored prompting and semantic normalization of inconsistently reported features through embeddings, for example, to harmonize the complex nomenclature of CVD substrates. Beyond yielding more diverse and richer feature representations than traditional methods such as K-nearest neighbors (KNN) and Multivariate Imputation by Chained Equations (MICE), LLM-based data imputation is evaluated against dataset characteristics and prompting strategies. We vary the level of autonomy granted to the LLM, from generic prompting that leverages pre-trained knowledge for autonomous data generation to data-informed prompting that constrains outputs using target-specific information, and demonstrate which level of autonomy yields superior imputation performance across datasets and feature types. The proposed data engineering methods markedly improve downstream performance; for example, in graphene layer number classification using a support vector machine (SVM), binary accuracy increases from 39% to 65% and ternary accuracy from 52% to 72%. Fine-tuning experiments on both datasets show that combining our proposed LLM-based data imputation and feature encoding methods with numerical machine learning predictors outperforms standalone fine-tuned LLM predictors in data-scarce settings. The proposed strategies emphasize data enhancement techniques rather than refining learning architectures or regularizing loss functions, offering a broadly applicable framework for improving machine learning performance on scarce, inhomogeneous datasets.

Kernel Enriched Meshfree Multiphysics Degradation Modeling of Energy Storage Materials

Energy storage materials exhibit strong electro-chemo-mechanical coupling and highly anisotropic material properties, contributing to the formation and propagation of micro-cracking during charge/discharge cycling and ultimately diminishing performance and service life. With microstructural images supplied by the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR), pixel-based meshfree model construction by the reproducing kernel particle method (RKPM) is used to represent the complex material microstructures that dictate the coupled physics of these systems. Traditional electro-chemo-mechanical models rely on mesh-based finite element methods, which can lead to difficulties in meshing such complex geometries and capturing crack propagation due to mesh dependency. The first kernel enrichment discussed will be the interface modified reproducing kernel (IM-RK) [1, 2], constructed by scaling a smooth kernel function with an interface-distance function to achieve strategic discontinuity types (i.e. weak discontinuities for strain discontinuities and strong discontinuities for cracks) and alleviate Gibbs oscillations near these transition zones. The IM-RK is especially useful for areas in which a known discontinuity-type is expected a priori. The second kernel enrichment to be discussed is a neural network-enhanced reproducing kernel (NN-RK) [3, 4], which is introduced to effectively model non-obvious damage and crack propagation in the material microstructures; the location, orientation, and solution transition near a localization are automatically captured by superimposed block-level NN optimizations. This NN enrichment approach allows for effective modeling of localizations via a fixed background discretization, relieving tedious efforts for adaptive refinement in traditional mesh-based methods. Applications to the heterogeneous microstructures of Li-ion battery cathodes will be presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods. NN-RK is additionally used to inform how crack opening and closure in turn affect the electro-chemo-mechanical responses in the material microstructure. Reducing leakage current and enhancing polarization in multiferroic 3D super-nanocomposites by microstructure engineering

Abstract Multiferroic materials have generated great interest due to their potential as functional device materials. Nanocomposites have been increasingly used to design and generate new functionalities by pairing dissimilar ferroic materials, though the combination often introduces new complexity and challenges unforeseeable in single-phase counterparts. The recently developed approaches to fabricate 3D super-nanocomposites (3D‐sNC) open new avenues to control and enhance functional properties. In this work, we develop a new 3D‐sNC with CoFe 2 O 4 (CFO) short nanopillar arrays embedded in BaTiO 3 (BTO) film matrix via microstructure engineering by alternatively depositing BTO:CFO vertically-aligned nanocomposite layers and single-phase BTO layers. This microstructure engineering method allows encapsulating the relative conducting CFO phase by the insulating BTO phase, which suppress the leakage current and enhance the polarization. Our results demonstrate that microstructure engineering in 3D‐sNC offers a new bottom–up method of fabricating advanced nanostructures with a wide range of possible configurations for applications where the functional properties need to be systematically modified.
