Energy I-Corps 2023: Distributed Wind Energy Toolkit

This presentation covers the purpose and scope of an Energy I-Corps project focused on refining a suite of analytical tools designed to support distributed wind deployment. These tools - the Distributed Generation Market Demand (dGen), Distributed Wind Tools Assessing Performance (TAP), and the Hybrid Optimization and Performance Platform (HOPP) - combine to provide users with the ability to simulate consumer purchasing behavior, accurately assess wind resource to better predict turbine performance, and effectively design and optimize hybrid systems that include distributed wind.

Energy I-Corps Annual Report 2023

The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Technology Transitions is pleased to provide an update on the Energy I-Corps program. Now in its eighth year, Energy I-Corps delivers workforce development training and funding support to accelerate clean energy technology commercialization. As of November 2023, 215 teams from 12 National Labs have participated in Energy I-Corps over the course of 17 cohorts and the pilot. More than 20 teams have launched new businesses based on their Energy I-Corps technology. Post Energy I-Corps, technologies have attracted more than $177 million in post-program funding and executed 78 licenses.

Energy I-Corps Annual Report 2022

The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Technology Transitions is pleased to provide an update on the Energy I-Corps program. Now in its eighth year, Energy I-Corps addresses critical gaps in workforce development for our National Lab researchers. It provides meaningful real-world opportunities for the application of commercialization and entrepreneurial skills to DOE technologies. As of November 2022, 191 teams from 12 National Labs have participated in Energy I-Corps over the course of 15 cohorts and the pilot. Since its inception, Energy I-Corps participants have learned from more than 180 industry mentors and conducted over 13,600 discovery interviews with companies like: EPRI, Shell, Ford, World Bank, Breakthrough Energy, John Deere, Siemens Gamesa, Chevron, Eaton, Samsung, Lowes, Johns Manville, LEGO, U.S. Army, Trane, Tesla, GM, Dow Chemical, 3M, Whirlpool, GE, Home Depot, and Amazon. Over 20 teams have launched new businesses based on their Energy I-Corps technology. Post Energy I-Corps, technologies have attracted over $140M in post-program funding and executed over 75 licenses.

Now in its ninth year, Energy I-Corps delivers workforce development training and funding support to accelerate clean energy technology commercialization. As of November 2024, 243 teams from 13 National Labs have participated in Energy I-Corps over the course of 19 cohorts and the pilot. Post Energy I-Corps, technologies have attracted more than $197 million in post-program funding and executed 85 licenses.

Energy I-Corps Annual Report 2021

The U.S. Department of Energy invests millions of dollars every year into the national lab complex. This investment allows the national laboratories to tackle the critical scientific challenges of our time - from renewable energy to quantum computing to creating a more resilient energy grid. The discoveries and innovations being developed by the labs have an even greater impact when we invest in bringing these ideas to the market where they can benefit the nation and world. To better arm researchers to collaborate with industry and turn research and development into demonstration and deployment, DOE employs Energy I-Corps to help researchers gain industry insight to guide innovation. Energy I-Corps invites teams of researchers to participate in an intensive two-month training during which the researchers define technology value propositions, conduct customer discovery interviews, and explore viable market pathways for their technologies. Researchers return to their labs with a framework for industry engagement to guide future research and inform a culture of market engagement within the lab environment. In this way, Energy I-Corps ensures our investment in the national labs and maintains and strengthens long-term U.S. competitiveness.

Energy I-Corps Electron Beam (EB) Potential for International Trade of Logs

The purpose of this document is to capture the potential from Fermilab’s “Team EB Treement” at the DOE Energy I-Corps program. Energy I-Corps, a key initiative of the Office of Technology Transitions, pairs teams of researchers with industry mentors for an intensive two-month training where the researchers define technology value propositions, conduct customer discovery interviews, and develop viable market pathways for their technologies. The team was composed prior to the Energy I-Corp program; however, the program was a catalyst for education and information exchange between the team members and stakeholders, customers, and regulators. These exchanges were captured in the evolution of a Business Model Canvas (BMC) and a Value Proposition (VP). The BMC and VP underwent numerous transformations based on feedback from the conversations between members of the team and forest or agriculture industry stakeholders and the program instructors.

CESER I-Corps (Final Report)

Energy I-Corps is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) sponsored entrepreneurial training program for laboratory researchers aimed at accelerating the commercialization of lab-developed technologies. The program, developed and managed by DOE's Office of Technology Commercialization (OTC) in partnership with the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR), uses a customized curriculum built on the Lean Launch Methodology and delivers a rigorous 10- to 12-week training program to selected laboratory-based teams. The Energy I-Corps team at NLR worked with the DOE's OTC and Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER) to develop and implement commercialization programming for awardees of the CESER Cybersecurity for Distributed Energy Resources Research, Development, and Demonstration Research Call, funded under Provision 40125(b) of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). 40125(b) Projects were overseen by a technical monitor at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). The CESER Energy I-Corps Program is considered an Energy I-Corps "lite" or "mini" program, with a lighter lift to accommodate scheduling and funding per participant. This final report describes the CESER I-Corps program and provides recommendations on behalf of OTC to CESER to consider if CESER were to run an I-Corps program in future.

Real Time-Optimal Power Flow-Based Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS)

This project aims to promote lab-proven clean energy technology to commercially scalable versions of the technology, integrate the technology with broader systems, provide extended performance data, and validate the manufacturability and reliability of the technology. The lab-proven technology, RT-OPF DERMS, was developed and validated through previous U.S. Department of Energy-funded efforts, including Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy funding under the Network Optimized Distributed Energy Systems program and Holy-Cross Energy High Impact Project. In the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy Network Optimized Distributed Energy Systems project, the RT-OPF DERMS was developed and implemented in multiple hardware platforms, demonstrating its performance and capabilities in the lab and field environments. The technology was also evaluated and matured via a participation in the U.S. Department of Energy I-Corps program, whose goal is to pair teams of researchers with industry mentors for an intensive 2-month training in which the researchers define technology value propositions, conduct customer discovery interviews, and develop viable market pathways for their technologies. These activities indicate the high technology maturity and Technology Readiness Level of the RT-OPF DERMS.

sCO 2 Brayton Energy Conversion Customer Discovery

All energy production systems need efficient energy conversion systems. Current Rankine cycles use water to generate steam at temperatures where efficiency is limited to around 40%. As existing fossil and nuclear power plants are decommissioned due to end of effective life and/or societies’ desire for cleaner generation options, more efficient energy conversion is needed to keep up with increasing electricity demands. Modern energy generation technologies, such as advanced nuclear reactors and concentrated solar, coupled to high efficiency sCO 2 conversion systems provide a solution to efficient, clean energy systems. Leading R&D communities worldwide agree that the successful development of sCO 2 Brayton power cycle technology will eventually bring about large-scale changes to existing multi-billion-dollar global markets and enable power applications not currently possible or economically justifiable. However, all new technologies face challenges in the path to commercialization and the electricity sector is distinctively risk averse. The Sandia sCO 2 Brayton team needs to better understand what the electricity sector needs in terms of new technology risk mitigation, generation efficiency, reliability improvements above current technology, and cost requirements which would make new technology adoption worthwhile. Relying on the R&D community consensus that a sCO 2 power cycle will increase the revenue of the electrical industry, without addressing the electrical industry’s concerns, significantly decreases the potential for adoption at commercial scale. With a clear understanding of the market perspectives on technology adoption, including military, private sector, and utilities customers, the Sandia Brayton Team can resolve industry concerns for smoother development and faster transition to commercialization. An extensive customer discovery process, similar to that executed through the NSF’s I-Corp program, is necessary in order to understand the pain points of the market and articulate the value proposition of Brayton systems in terms that engage decision makers and facilitate commercialization of the technology.
