Hybrid analysis of radiative corrections to neutron decay with current algebra and effective field theory

We introduce a useful framework for high-precision studies of the neutron beta decay by merging the current algebra description and the fixed-order effective field theory calculation of the electroweak radiative corrections to the neutron axial form factor. We discuss the advantages of this hybrid method and show that it only requires a minimal amount of lattice QCD inputs to achieve a 10 –4 theory accuracy for the Standard Model prediction of the neutron lifetime and the axial-to-vector coupling ratio λ, both important to the search for physics beyond the Standard Model.

The Standard Model Theory of Neutron Beta Decay

We review the status of the Standard Model theory of neutron beta decay. Particular emphasis is put on the recent developments in the electroweak radiative corrections. Given that some existing approaches give slightly different results, we thoroughly review the origin of discrepancies, and provide our recommended value for the radiative correction to the neutron and nuclear decay rates. The use of dispersion relation, lattice Quantum Chromodynamics, and an effective field theory framework allows for high-precision theory calculations at the level of 10 –4 , turning neutron beta decay into a powerful tool to search for new physics, complementary to high-energy collider experiments. We offer an outlook to the future improvements.

Ab initio electroweak corrections to superallowed β decays and their impact on V ud

Radiative corrections are essential for an accurate determination of V ud from superallowed β decays. In view of recent progress in the single-nucleon sector, the uncertainty is dominated by the theoretical description of nucleus-dependent effects, limiting the precision that can currently be achieved for V ud . In this work, we provide a detailed account of the electroweak corrections to superallowed β decays in effective field theory (EFT), including the power counting, potential and ultrasoft contributions, and factorization in the decay rate. Here, we present a first numerical evaluation of the dominant corrections in light nuclei based on quantum Monte Carlo methods, confirming the expectations from the EFT power counting. Finally, we discuss strategies how to extract from data the low-energy constants that parametrize short-distance contributions and whose values are not predicted by the EFT. Combined with advances in ab initio nuclear-structure calculations, this EFT framework allows one to systematically address the dominant uncertainty in V ud , as illustrated in detail for the 14 O → 14 N transition.

Mass generation in an Abelian gauge theory with multiple scalar fields and no tree-level dimensionful couplings

We study the Abelian Higgs model with multiple scalar fields, but without mass terms. Solving the model nonperturbatively order-by-order in the number of scalar fields, we find that radiative corrections generate masses for the scalar and gauge boson, without spontaneous symmetry breaking. The mass scales are set by the Λ -parameter of the electroweak running coupling, thereby naturally avoiding the hierarchy problem. No part of our calculation employs a weak-coupling expansion, and we find that the perturbative vacuum is metastable, and hence must decay to the stable nonperturbative vacuum of the theory, which we identify. Although the field content of our Lagrangian is standard, our results predict the existence of two heavy scalar resonances in addition to the Higgs. We believe that these predicted resonances will ultimately allow experimentalists to discriminate between our method and standard solutions of the Higgs model. Pion-Induced Radiative Corrections to Neutron β Decay

In this work, we compute the electromagnetic corrections to neutron β decay using a low-energy hadronic effective field theory. We identify new radiative corrections arising from virtual pions that were missed in previous studies. The largest correction is a percent-level shift in the axial charge of the nucleon proportional to the electromagnetic part of the pion-mass splitting. Smaller corrections, comparable to anticipated experimental precision, impact the β-ν angular correlations and the β asymmetry. We comment on implications of our results for the comparison of the experimentally measured nucleon axial charge with first-principles computations using lattice QCD and on the potential of β decay experiments to constrain beyond-the-standard-model interactions.

Factorization and resummation of QED radiative corrections for neutron beta decay

Details of the two-loop analysis of long-distance QED radiative corrections to neutron beta decay are presented. Explicit expressions are given for hard, jet, and soft functions appearing in the factorization formula that describes the limit of small electron mass and large electron energy. Numerical enhancements from the infrared region are resummed using renormalization group methods. Power corrections, cancellation of singularities in the small-mass expansion, renormalization scheme dependence, and bound-state effects are also discussed. These results provide the most precise determination of long-distance radiative corrections to neutron beta decay and impact the determination of |𝑉 𝑢⁢𝑑 | from the measured neutron lifetime and thus set a target for uncertainty reductions in the experimental and short-distance inputs.

Medium-induced photon bremsstrahlung in neutrino-nucleus, antineutrino-nucleus, and electron-nucleus scattering from multiple QED interactions

Interactions of charged leptons with nuclei and the naive tree-level kinematics of these processes are affected by radiation of photons induced by the QED nuclear medium. We evaluate cross section modifications at leading orders of the number of correlated interactions inside the nucleus, known as the opacity expansion. We derive results for soft and collinear types of the bremsstrahlung at the first three orders in opacity and generalize them to higher orders. We present the leading in opacity energy spectra of soft and collinear photons and radiative energy loss inside the nucleus for experiments with lepton kinematics in the GeV energy range. At leading power of the Glauber soft-collinear effective field theory, the soft radiation is further resummed to all orders both in opacity and in the electromagnetic coupling constant. We find that the soft and collinear medium-induced radiation is vacuumlike, and additional corrections are power suppressed. Despite the negligible modification to the induced photon spectra, the nuclear medium-induced radiation sizably affects the broadening of charged leptons in the direction orthogonal to their propagation. Radiative Corrections to Superallowed β Decays in Effective Field Theory

The accuracy of V u d determinations from superallowed β decays critically hinges on control over radiative corrections. Recently, substantial progress has been made on the single-nucleon, universal corrections, while nucleus-dependent effects, typically parametrized by a quantity δ NS , are much less well constrained. Here, we lay out a program to evaluate this correction from effective field theory (EFT), highlighting the dominant terms as predicted by the EFT power counting. Moreover, we compare the results to a dispersive representation of δ NS and show that the expected momentum scaling applies even in the case of low-lying intermediate states. Our EFT framework paves the way toward calculations of δ NS and thereby addresses the dominant uncertainty in V u d . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Invariant amplitudes, unpolarized cross sections, and polarization asymmetries in neutrino-nucleon and antineutrino-nucleon elastic scattering

At leading order in weak and electromagnetic couplings, cross sections for (anti)neutrino-nucleon elastic scattering are determined by four nucleon form factors that depend on the momentum transfer Q 2 . Including radiative corrections in the Standard Model and potential new physics contributions beyond the Standard Model, eight invariant amplitudes are possible, depending on both Q 2 and the (anti)neutrino energy E ν . We review the definition of these amplitudes and use them to compute both unpolarized and polarized observables including radiative corrections. We show that unpolarized accelerator neutrino cross-section measurements can probe new physics parameter space within the constraints inferred from precision beta decay measurements. Renormalization of beta decay at three loops and beyond

The anomalous dimension for heavy-heavy-light effective theory operators describing nuclear beta decay is computed through three-loop order in the static limit. The result at order Z 2 α 3 corrects a previous result in the literature. An all-orders symmetry is shown to relate the anomalous dimensions at leading and subleading powers of Z at a given order of α . The first unknown coefficient for the anomalous dimension now appears at O ( Z 2 α 4 ) . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Unique Forbidden Beta Decays at Zero Momentum Transfer

We report an exploratory study of the 𝒪⁡(𝛼) structure-dependent electromagnetic radiative corrections to unique first-forbidden nuclear beta decays. We show that the insertion of angular momentum into the nuclear matrix element by the virtual or real photon exchange opens up the decay at vanishing nuclear recoil momentum which was forbidden at tree level, leading to a dramatic change in the decay spectrum not anticipated in existing studies. We discuss its implications for precision tests on the standard model and searches for new physics.

Impact of Next-to-Leading-Order Weak Standard-Model-Effective-Field-Theory Corrections in e + e − → Z H

We present results from a complete next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation of e + e − → Z H in the standard model effective field theory (SMEFT) framework, including all contributions from dimension-six operators. At NLO, there are novel dependencies on CP violating parameters in the gauge sector, on modifications to the Higgs boson self-couplings, on alterations to the top quark Yukawa couplings, and on four-fermion operators involving the electron and the top quark, among others. We show that including only the logarithms resulting from renormalization group scaling can produce misleading results, and further, we explicitly demonstrate the constraining power of combining measurements from different energy scales. QED nuclear medium effects at EIC energies

Here, we present the first calculation of quantum electrodynamics (QED) nuclear medium effects under the experimental conditions of future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) experiments. Our work offers numerical estimates, particularly in the context of inclusive deep inelastic scattering on a $^{208}_{82}$Pb nucleus. While prior studies have predominantly focused on elastic scattering, our investigation extends to the more complex scenarios of inelastic processes within a nuclear medium. Our findings suggest that the cross section corrections due to QED nuclear medium effects could be substantial, reaching or exceeding the level of experimental precision. This work further compares the effects of single rescattering events with those of multiple rescatterings, as particles travel the nuclear volume. We estimate the dominant source of the uncertainties associated with our formalism by varying the scale of the atomic physics where the screening of the electric field of the nucleus happens. This calculation not only contributes to the understanding of QED nuclear medium effects, but also offers a path to a more precise extraction of the process-independent nonperturbative structure of nuclei.

Measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in the 𝑁 → Δ transition at low 𝑄 2

Here, we report the measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in the 𝑁 → Δ transition via the 𝑒 − + 𝑝 → 𝑒 − + Δ + reaction at two different kinematic points with low four-momentum transfer 𝑄 2 . Measurements were made with incident electron beam energies of 0.877 and 1.16 GeV, corresponding to 𝑄 2 values of 0.0111 and 0.0208 (GeV/c) 2 , respectively. These measurements put constraints on a low-energy constant in the weak Lagrangian, 𝑑 Δ , corresponding to a parity-violating electric-dipole transition matrix element. This matrix element has been shown to be large in the strangeness-changing channel, via weak hyperon decays such as Σ + → 𝑝⁢𝛾. The measurements reported here constrain 𝑑 Δ in the strangeness-conserving channel. The final asymmetries were −0.65±1.00⁢(stat.)±1.02⁢(syst.) ppm (parts per million) for 0.877 GeV and −3.59±0.82⁢(stat.)±1.33⁢(syst.) ppm for 1.16 GeV. With these results we deduce a small value for 𝑑 Δ , consistent with zero, in the strangeness-conserving channel, in contrast to the large value for 𝑑 Δ previously reported in the strangeness-changing channel.

Search for a heavy neutral lepton with the MAGNETO-𝜈 experiment using 241 Pu 𝛽 − decays

The MAGNETO-𝜈 experiment searches for keV-scale heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) through precise measurements of the 𝛽 − -decay spectrum of 241 Pu. We present spectra comprising a total of 194 million 𝛽 − decays recorded using decay energy spectrometry with metallic magnetic calorimeters, representing the most statistically precise measurement of 241 Pu 𝛽 − decay to date. The 𝛽-endpoint energy was determined using 𝛾 rays and x-rays from an external 133 Ba calibration source, yielding 𝑄 𝛽 = 22.273⁢ (33) ⁢keV. The measured spectrum shows no statistically significant deviation from the allowed 𝛽-decay model. From a subset of the high-statistics data, we set an upper limit on the mixing of an 11.5-keV HNL with the electron neutrino, |𝑈 𝑒⁢4 | 2 < 1.31 × 10 −3 at the 95% confidence level.
