Positronium-hydrogen elastic scattering

Elastic scattering of positronium atoms by hydrogen atoms below the excitation threshold at 5.1 eV is investigated with the investigation limited to the spin-zero (singlet) state of the two electrons. Nonresonant S-wave phase shifts have been obtained from normalizable trial functions by extracting the center-of-mass wave function and examining its spatial behavior. An effective-range expansion is fitted to the phase shifts and the previously obtained positronium-hydride bound-state energy to yield a scattering length approximately equal to 5.3 Bohr radii as compared with Fraser's (1961) corrected exchange result of 7.28 Bohr radii. The stabilization method suggests that a resonance occurs at a scattering energy of 4.5 eV, about 0.6 eV below the excitation threshold. Using the complex-rotation method, evidence is obtained which confirms the existence of the resonance, and its width is estimated to be about 0.06 eV.

Parameterizations of electron scattering form factors for elastic scattering and electroexcitation of nuclear states in 27 Al and 40 Ca

Here, we report on empirical parameterizations of longitudinal ($\mathscr{R}$ L ) and transverse ($\mathscr{R}$ T ) nuclear elec- tromagnetic form factors for elastic scattering and the excitations of nuclear states in 27 Al and 40 Ca. The parameterizations are needed for the calculations of radiative corrections in measurements of electron scattering cross sections on 27 Al and 40 Ca in the quasi-elastic, resonance and inelastic con- tinuum regions, provide the contribution of nuclear excitations in investigations of the Coulomb Sum Rule, and test theoretical model predictions for excitation of nuclear states in electron and neutrino interactions on nuclear targets at low energies.

Nonmonotonic-potential description of polarization effects, fusion, and nuclear rainbows in elastic scattering of 6 Li + 12 C at 4.5–600 MeV

The experimental differential cross-section (CS) and analyzing power (AP) data of the 6 Li + 12 C elastic scattering over a wide laboratory energy scale (4.5MeV≤𝐸 lab ≤600MeV) are analyzed within the framework of the optical model (OPM) using nonmonotonic (NM) nucleus–nucleus potentials. The real part of the NM potentials is derived from the Pauli-embodied energy density-functional (EDF) formalism with the sudden approximation. The real part of the noncentral spin-orbit and tensor terms, as well as the imaginary parts, are treated phenomenologically. The effect of the radius of sensitivity on the CS and AP data is found to be more important at lower energies. The diffractive and refractive scattering with Airy structures in the whole angular region of the elastic scattering across the studied energy range is successfully described within the OPM using the NM 6 Li + 12 C potential. The near- and far-side (N and F) decomposition of the total elastic-scattering amplitudes has also been studied using our NM potentials. The evolution of the Airy minima in the angular distributions, coupled with the fitting of the AP data, provides an accurate description of Airy minima of different orders. The OPM calculations with the NM potentials describe exceptionally well the CS, vector analyzing power (VAP), and tensor analyzing power data at 𝐸 lab =9.0,19.24,20,30, and 50MeV. In agreement with our past successful descriptions of CS and the opposite signs of the VAP data for the 6 Li and 7 Li elastic scattering using NM potentials in OPM, the present results appear to provide a better fit, so far, than those obtained from the coupled-channels method. The fusion cross sections of 6 Li + 12 C have been predicted in the energy range (4.5MeV≤𝐸 lab ≤20MeV), fitting the experimental data well in the range 𝐸 lab =2.97–11.77MeV. The EDF potential without any energy dependence and renormalization is also found to describe satisfactorily the experimental CS and AP data at energies up to several hundreds of MeV.

Elastic scattering of deuterons by carbon

Deuteron-carbon elastic scattering is studied within the framework of the Glauber approximation. The full Glauber multiple scattering series is evaluated with simplified nuclear wave functions. An approximation in which deuteron-nucleus scattering is expressed in terms of nucleon-nucleus scattering amplitudes is shown to be accurate for small momentum transfers. The effects of the Coulomb field and the deuteron D state are investigated. The impressive fit to the 650 MeV d-(C-12) elastic scattering data, obtained in a recent calculation, is shown to be due to additional approximations made in that analysis.

Status of the Measurement of Neutrino-Electron Elastic Scattering in the NOvA Near Detector

Neutrino–electron elastic scattering is a purely leptonic process with a precisely calculable Standard Model cross section, providing an \textit{in situ} constraint on accelerator neutrino flux predictions. Using data collected with the NOvA Near Detector in forward horn current mode, we perform a measurement of neutrino–electron elastic scattering and apply a flux-constraint technique based on the reconstructed electron-energy spectrum. This approach improves the precision of the predicted $\nu_\mu$ flux and enhances the accuracy of near-detector cross-section measurements. The analysis also demonstrates a practical framework for flux constraints in current and future accelerator neutrino experiments.

Elastic scattering in the 12 N + 197 Au system at 𝐸 lab = 70 MeV

Halo structure is an interesting exotic configuration developed in some light weakly bound nuclei, where a valence particle orbits a nuclear core. Signatures of halo structure can be observed in the angular distributions of the elastic scattering induced by these nuclei at energies around the Coulomb barrier. There are some well-studied reactions with neutron-rich halo nuclei, such as 6 He and 11 Li . However, the information is scarce on the proton-rich side. Recent works confirm the halo structure in the 8B nuclei but still lack more experimental studies for other proton-halo candidates, such as 12 N and 17 F. In this work, we report experimental data for the elastic scattering of 12 N on 197 Au target at 𝐸 lab = 70 MeV. The 12 N is a proton-rich nucleus with proton separation energy 𝑆 𝑝 = 600 keV, which is higher than the 8 B (𝑆 𝑝 = 137 keV) and almost the same as the 17 F (𝑆 𝑝 = 601 keV). Data were obtained at the Cyclotron Institute of Texas A&M University where the 12 N radioactive beam was produced by the momentum achromatic recoil spectrometer. The calculation of the optical model was used to fit the measured angular distribution for the elastic scattering and to obtain the reaction cross section 𝜎 𝑅 . We also performed continuum discretized coupled-channel calculations to compare with the experimental data. The angular distribution of the elastic cross sections exhibits a suppression of the Fresnel peak. From the fitting of the optical model, we obtain the total reaction cross section, 𝜎 𝑅 = 1269 ± 41 mb. The agreement between the CDCC calculation and the experimental elastic scattering data is limited and the breakdown does not exhaust the measured 𝜎 𝑅 . The resulting reduced reaction cross section 𝜎 Red for 12 N + 197 Au is large and comparable to the one obtained for the 8 B + 208 Pb system. This suggests a strong decoupling of the valence proton from the core because of the low binding energy and a dynamic polarization effect. Here, more research is required to estimate the contribution of core excitation.

Angular distribution of electrons elastically scattered from N2.

Measurement of the angular distribution of electrons elastically scattered from N2 as a function of energy, utilizing a crossed-beam technique. Measurements have been made of monoenergetic electrons with energies between 5 and 90 eV scattered from a collimated beam of N2 at angles from -114 to +160 deg. The wide angular range of the measurements has enabled the determination of the total elastic-scattering and momentum-transfer cross sections. The measurements are relative and have been normalized to Fisk's (1936) theoretical calculation at 5 eV. The results generally agree well with other published measurements and with theory.

Close-coupling calculations with an INDOX/1s static potential, semiclassical exchange, and a semi-empirical polarisation potential for electron-CO2 elastic scattering and rotational excitation

A semiempirical molecular-orbital method for modelling the effective potential for electron-molecule scattering is applied to elastic scattering and rotational excitation of CO2 at 20 eV impact energy. Agreement with experiment is reasonably good. The calculated rotationally summed integral cross section is 67.8 a sub 0 squared.
