Route Energy Prediction (RouteE) Powertrain Validation Report

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory's flagship package in the RouteE suite, RouteE-Powertrain, is a mesoscopic energy model that predicts vehicle energy consumption given discrete attributes that describe each segment or link in a vehicle's path on a road network. High-frequency, physics-based, powertrain simulators, such as NREL's FASTSim, are well-suited to model vehicle energy consumption when real driving data and a detailed understanding of the vehicle powertrain specifications are available. However, there are a variety of situations in the past, present (real-time), and future where high-frequency driving data and/or vehicle information may not be available, but reliable energy consumption is still desired, such as energy-aware vehicle routing. These are the ideal applications for RouteE-Powertrain. The suite of RouteE tools also includes RouteE-Compass, which is an eco-routing software that incorporates energy consumption into network routing algorithms, and RouteE-Mobile, which is a prototype smartphone navigation app to demonstrate the integrated capabilities of the RouteE suite for real-world eco-routing. The focus of this validation report is to share key metrics about the data sets and models behind RouteE-Powertrain. The set of RouteE-Powertrain models discussed in this report are made available through the RouteE web API through the NREL Developer Network.

Improving the Freight Productivity of a Heavy-Duty, Battery Electric Truck by Intelligent Energy Management

This project aimed to enhance the range and reduce the operating costs of battery electric Class 8 trucks traveling over 250 miles daily. This was achieved through the development and implementation of an intelligent-Energy Management System (i-EMS) that leverages vehicle and operations data, physics-aware machine learning algorithms, and vehicle-to-cloud (V2C) connectivity. The project hypothesized that advanced machine learning algorithms and real-time data analytics could significantly improve the energy efficiency and range of these trucks. Key objectives included developing a physics-aware machine learning algorithm, implementing an i-EMS with V2C connectivity and physics-aware spatial data analytics (PSDA), and validating the system’s effectiveness with fleet partners HEB Companies and Murphy Logistics. Extensive data collection from vehicle operations, including vehicle characteristics, road conditions, and payload, was conducted. A machine learning algorithm was developed to predict energy consumption and enable proactive decision-making. The i-EMS was implemented on two Volvo VNR BEVs, with operators receiving charging and routing recommendations. Charging stations were installed at depot locations in Texas and Minnesota, with an additional on-route charger in Minnesota. Significant findings included a 14% range improvement for Murphy Logistics on a highway-driving eco-route and a 22% range improvement for HEB Companies on a city-driving eco-route. The i-EMS utilized rule-based methods and physics-based algorithms to predict and reduce energy consumption, with real-time monitoring and analysis through V2C connectivity enabling proactive decision-making. The project demonstrated the feasibility and economic viability of battery electric Class 8 trucks for long-haul operations, showcasing the potential of physics-aware machine learning in optimizing energy management. The successful implementation of the i-EMS in real-world scenarios validates its practical application and effectiveness, paving the way for the widespread adoption of battery electric vehicles in the freight transportation industry.

AutonomieAI: An efficient and deployable vehicle energy consumption estimation toolkit

Here, this paper presents AutonomieAI, a novel toolkit designed for efficient energy estimation of vehicles across diverse trip scenarios, routes, and drive cycles, applicable to a broad range of vehicle powertrain technologies. It leverages state-of-the-art Machine Learning techniques to deliver real-time energy prediction of vehicles, enabling co-simulation with transportation level system tools and opening doors for large-scale optimization at city, network or national level. Benchmark results show that AutonomieAI achieves high accuracy, with an average percentage error below 2% for most powertrain types, and computational efficiency capable of processing over 10,000 trips per second. Applications of AutonomieAI have potential to offer the flexibility to assist in solving eco-routing problems, optimize for vehicle and powertrain selection, study charging decision behavior, and optimize for charging station placement. AutonomieAI is the result of large neural network based model architectures, trained on very large and unique high fidelity vehicle simulation data. It is lightweight, deployable, efficient and has accuracy comparable to specialized and complex physics based simulation softwares.

RouteE API

This is the API endpoint for RouteE energy prediction, which can be used to get both single vehicle link or route energy estimates and transportation network-wide energy consumption estimates for a variety of vehicles. This enables external researchers and transportation engineers to access and utilize NLR's growing library of pre-trained vehicle models for prediction of transportation energy consumption. This API provides three endpoints: - /route: Energy estimation of a vehicle over a planning link or sequence of links (route). - /network: Network-wide estimation of energy consumption for all vehicle traffic in the desired area. - /compass: Energy-optimal “eco-routing” between input origin and destination coordinates (Currently in beta for Denver metro area only).

LogPath: Log data based energy consumption analysis enabling electric vehicle path optimization

Vehicle navigation and path optimization require a more meticulous approach when it deals with EVs (electric vehicles) and SDVs (software-defined vehicles), due to lengthy charging times and the lack of charging infrastructure. Long-distance freight EV trucking needs path guidance with accurate energy consumption estimates to prevent charging-related failures. We developed a novel energy consumption estimation approach that only uses battery log data to extract major vehicle parameters to increase EV navigation accuracy without additional sensors. This is enabled by extracting multiple drive modes from the log data for analysis. The system provides 1) routes, 2) charge locations, 3) charging times, and 4) optimal vehicle speeds that guarantee the shortest travel time. Here we successfully validated the system using log data collected from an EV and Tesla's Supercharging map in the US and compared it with the commercially available navigation system, Tesla's trip planner, whose capabilities solely include charging time and routing.

Energy-Aware Route Planning with RouteE Compass

This poster introduces RouteE Compass, a new tool that advances sustainable transportation by enabling energy-aware route planning across diverse vehicle types and large-scale road networks. By addressing practical trade-offs between energy consumption, travel time, and economic cost, RouteE Compass fills critical gaps in traditional routing methods, which often lack the flexibility to prioritize energy directly. The tool's scalability and high-performance computing capabilities allow for national-scale analyses, offering actionable insights for fleet operators, transit agencies, and researchers. As an open-source, extensible platform, RouteE Compass empowers ongoing research and innovation in energy-aware routing, supporting the broader goals of reducing emissions and enhancing transportation sustainability.
