A Mixed integer linear programming‐based distributed energy management for networked microgrids considering network operational objectives and constraints

Abstract Mixed integer linear programming (MILP)–based distributed energy management for networked microgrids embedded modern distribution systems is proposed. Considering the diverse ownership of microgrids, distributed energy resources (DERs) that interface directly with utilities and responsive loads, an alternating direction method of multipliers–based distributed framework was formulated for the scheduling of networked microgrids embedded modern distribution systems by adjusting nodal price signals iteratively. In addition, to make the formulated optimization problems resolvable through more accessible and popular MILP solvers, different linearisation techniques were employed to transform the nonlinear terms into linear or mixed integer linear formats. The proposed MILP‐based distributed method preserves all participants' autonomy (e.g., microgrids, DERs that interface directly with utilities and responsive loads), while incentivising them to actively participate in the distribution system operation with price signals. The proposed method is validated with results of numerical simulation using a modern distribution system consisting of multiple networked microgrids, DERs that interface directly with utilities, as well as responsive loads.

The Distributed Energy Resource Cybersecurity Framework

For facilities with distributed energy resources (DERs), cybersecurity must be considered holistically, across system architectures and down to individual components. It's hard to know where to start. That's why the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has developed an assessment tool for organizations with DERs to understand and improve their cybersecurity. With support from the U.S. Department of Energy's Federal Energy Management Program, the Distributed Energy Resource Cybersecurity Framework (DER-CF) provides a holistic evaluation of a facility's DER cybersecurity and makes customized recommendations that follow widely recognized best practices for cybersecurity. The DER-CF is available at no cost as an interactive web tool (dercf.nrel.gov).

Techno-economic analysis of the impact of dynamic electricity prices on solar penetration in a smart grid environment with distributed energy storage

This study investigates the technical and economic feasibility of using high levels of solar energy penetration up to 400 MW into a smart grid system of 60,000 smart houses. A novel non-cooperative Stackelberg game is introduced that incorporates the profitability of the supply-side and helps in solving problems related to overgeneration and photovoltaic curtailment. The non-cooperative game is intended to find the optimal dynamic prices that would leverage distributed storage through the demand-side to stabilize the power grid operation. Ten cases are studied with five photovoltaic plant sizes and two battery designs. Here, a novel quantitative analysis of high levels of solar penetration as a percentage of the total electricity demand is introduced to evaluate the technical feasibility of the studied cases. To evaluate the economic viability of the proposed smart grid system, four metrics were used: the levelized cost of energy, the levelized cost of storage, the payback period, and the net present value. Two out of ten studied cases were concluded to be the most promising cases, one with a solar photovoltaic plant size of 200 MW and the other with 300 MW. The case with 300 MW solar plant is preferred as it paves the way for more solar energy deployment with a solar penetration percentage up to 67.78%. This case had a payback period of 10.72 years and a net present value of $\$51.44$ M for the solar plant and a payback period of 12.06 years and a net present value of $\$40.75$ M for the demand-side.

Stochastic Generation Capacity Expansion Planning with Approximate Dynamic Programming

Failing to consider the many long-term uncertainties that affect the performance of a power generation portfolio can result in suboptimal generation expansion plans. Further, traditional deterministic approaches can omit flexible plans that are able to adapt to future events. In this paper, we explore the use of approximate dynamic programming (ADP) to create forward-looking generation expansion plans. A case study is included with three sequential decision periods; three generation technologies; and four uncertainties: demand growth, natural gas prices, renewable portfolio standards, and the adoption of customer-driven solar generation. The flexible plans found through ADP show a 3 % reduction in total expected cost when compared to myopic planning heuristics while circumventing the computational burdens that accompany high-dimensional dynamic programs.

A Mixed Integer Linear Programming-basedDistributed Energy Management for Three-phaseUnbalanced Active Distribution Network

A mixed integer linear programming (MILP)–baseddistributed energy management for three-phase unbalancedactive distribution network is proposed. Modern distributionnetworks have becoming more and more active with increasingdeployment of microgrids, distributed energy resources (DERs)as well as controllable loads. Considering various ownership andcontrol models of microgrids, DERs and controllable loads, adistributed energy management was formulated using the alternatingdirection method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm. ByADMM, the distribution management system (DMS) and theseactive components are coordinated through price signals, whichare adjusted according to the generation-load mismatch per nodeper phase. To enable resolution of the ADMM-based distributedoptimization using more accessible and popular MILP solver, different linearization techniques were proposed to linearize theaugmented Lagrangian terms and other nonlinear terms. Resultsof case studies on a three-phase active distribution network withthree microgrids and several DERs and controllable loads validatedthe effectiveness of proposed MILP-based distributed energymanagement. In addition, the capability of proposed method inmitigating phase power unbalance has been demonstrated.

Approximate Dynamic Programming With Enhanced Off-Policy Learning for Coordinating Distributed Energy Resources

Herein this paper proposes an innovative approximate dynamic programming (ADP) method for distributed energy resource coordination with the loss of life of battery energy storage system (BESS) explicitly modeled. The dispatch policy is designed to account for both calendrical and cyclical aging effects on BESS, explicitly modeling the impacts of ambient temperature on BESS lifespan. The proposed ADP employs an adaptive critic method and enhanced off-policy deterministic policy gradient (DPG) strategy, addressing the limitations of the on-policy gradient-based ADP approaches, including inadequate exploration, low data usage, and computational complexity. In particular, a customized policy is proposed to guide the algorithm to explore some promising decisions and thereby improve exploration capability and learning efficiency compared to conventional DPG-based learning approaches, which may struggle to find a global optimum due to random noisy action-based exploration or require expert demonstration with extra effort. The proposed method is illustrated using the IEEE 123-node system and compared with the existing ADP methods to prove solution accuracy and demonstrate the effects of incorporating degradation models into control design. Case studies showed that the proposed ADP effectively coordinates DERs with a 10 times smaller optimization gap compared to existing methods, and the incorporation of the BESS life loss model ensures the expected lifespan and results in significant cost savings.

Reducing Grid Costs while Abating Emissions: Opportunities for Flexible Building Loads

This study evaluates the value of technology-agnostic, shiftable flexible building loads in modeled 2030 and 2040 U.S. grids for four types of customers under three potential aggregated distributed energy resources programs. The value examined includes monetary value from providing grid services (e.g., energy, capacity, flexibility reserve, regulation reserve, contingency reserve) and from reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By comparing more than 845,164,800 simulated shifting opportunities, the study finds that the timing of consumption is critical for profit-driven customers. A program that is activated for 30 critical hours of system operation can result in to $73 per year in revenue for 1 kWh of shiftable load. Emission reduction, on the other hand, is best accumulated through a year-round program: 1 kWh of shiftable load can lead to up to 487.9 kg CO2e carbon reduction per year. The report also provides detailed insights on the trade-off between revenue and emissions, regional variation, short- versus medium- term value, and impacts from various building flexibility parameters, such as shifting window and dissipation.

Potential Roles for Demand Response in High-Growth Electric Systems with Increasing Shares of Renewable Generation

Many countries around the world are experiencing rapid economic development while simultaneously deploying more wind and solar generators. This report explores potential roles for demand response - the modification of electricity load operations to provide grid services - to support these countries' development goals through enhancing grid reliability and assisting with renewable energy integration in the power sector. After reviewing current demand response programs types, which include wholesale and retail market offerings, as well as broader distributed energy resource (DER) aggregation programs, we reflect on the historical trajectory of demand response as a grid resource and on recent findings from renewable integration studies. The reviewed literature suggests that some types of demand response programs are likely to be more supportive of high-economic growth, high-renewable contexts than others. We conclude by outlining best practices for the design of new demand response programs that build on the historical lessons learned and are well suited to accommodate expected future changes in generation and load patterns.
