Rapid cooling of neutron stars by hyperons and Delta isobars

Direct Urca processes with hyperons and/or nucleon isobars can occur in dense matter as long as the concentration of Lambda hyperons exceeds a critical value that is less than 3 percent and is typically about 0.1 percent. The neutrino luminosities from the hyperon Urca processes are about 5-100 times less than the typical luminosity from the nucleon direct Urca process, if the latter process is not forbidden, but they are larger than those expected from other sources. These direct Urca processes provide avenues for rapid cooling of neutron stars which invoke neither exotic states nor the large proton fraction (of order 0.11-0.15) required for the nucleon direct Urca process.

Thermodynamic and related properties of oxygen from the triple point to 300 K at pressures to 1000 bar

The results of an experimental program are presented in the form of PVT data in the temperature range 58 to 300 K at pressures up to 800 bar. Tables of the derived thermodynamic properties on isobars to 1000 bar are given, including density, internal energy, enthalpy, entropy, specific heats at constant volume and constant pressure, velocity of sound, and the surface derivatives (delta P/delta T) sub rho and (delta P/delta Rho) sub T. Auxiliary tables in engineering units are also given. The accuracy of the data is discussed and comparisons are made with previous data.

Connection between variations of the atmosphere temperature profile and variations of the meson component intensity

The influence of temperature effects on intensity variations of the cosmic ray meson component were studied. The connection between the temperature variation delta T and the intensity variation delta I was established by using the temperature coefficient density technique. To realize how many devices are needed on the Earth for predicting the temperature variation of the atmosphere profile with a reasonable accuracy, IO isobaric levels and IO were calculated. The set of initial elements of the cosmic ray mesons are varied and it is shown that the matrix of the coefficients B sub ij is rather sensitive to their choice. It is found that if for the calculations of the atmospheric temperature variations the model is used, the number of meson components, essentially exceeding 3, should be considered.
