Cloud Governance at Scale

Operating and maintaining a large multi-tenant ecosystem in the cloud requires scalable solutions to unique technical and process challenges. The Cloud Computing model grants significant permissions to development teams that traditionally were reserved for Data-Center Administrators and Supply-Chain Managers. Earthdata Cloud has worked to re-cast traditional data-center management into a sensible cloud-first model. This talk discusses some of our challenges, solutions, and way ahead.

Digitalization of an experimental electrochemical reactor via the smart manufacturing innovation platform

The exponential increase in data produced over the last two decades has revolutionized the way we collect, store, process, analyze, model, and interpret information to improve profitability. Manufacturing is no exception. How- ever, Smart Manufacturing, the digital practice, organization, workforce, and infrastructure transformation for collection and deployment of data and models at scale and at all levels of manufacturing, is a complex, costly, and labor-intensive journey that is still seeing slow adoption. The Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII), a national Manufacturing USA public-private partnership sponsored by the Department of Energy, is addressing this scaled use of data and modeling in manufacturing. CESMII has focused on how to col- lect and use operating data for numerous applications that improve productivity, precision, and performance of manufacturing operations from factory floor to supply chain using process simulation, predictive analytics, mon- itoring and control, and real-time optimization. Because contextualized data are key, CESMII has developed the Smart Manufacturing Innovation Platform (SMIP) to lower the barriers to the data that are needed to accelerate data-based model building, improve data visualization, and more quickly gain insights. Reusable, standards-based ways of doing data collection, ingestion, and contextualization are particularly important for scaling access and use of data. The SMIP uses a standards-based definition and construct for reusable information models called an SM Profile. When an SM Profile is used in conjunction with the SMIP, the SMIP ensures the availability of contextualized, operational data for model building. The present work demonstrates Smart Manufacturing and the application of the SMIP for building several data-centered models for the operation and control of an ex- perimental electrochemical reactor that reduces carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) gas to valuable liquid and gas chemicals, such as alcohols, olefins, and syngas. We describe how the SMIP plays a central role in more effective model building and we demonstrate how the electochemical reactor can be controlled and optimized for the desired products. Use of the SMIP involves the transmission of real-time sensor measurements to a cloud resource so that the operating data are available to all model building experts. The data collection and transmission process is fully automated to greatly reduce the need for manual manipulation of the data. Data-driven machine learning models are used for advanced real-time state estimation, real-time optimization, and model-based feedback control for the reactor. The application models are implemented as a system to monitor the data flow and control the electrochemical reactor with a single visualization interface. SM Profiles are used to demonstrate reusability of the information models for the reactor and the instrumentation. The application packages, algorithms, and user interfaces developed are cast as Docker images in a library to facilitate reusability of the application models.

VoroClust: Scalable Clustering for Remote Sensing

Although supervised machine learning provides a powerful framework for image classification and segmentation, it requires comprehensive consistent datasets, which are not available for many remote-sensing applications. Remote-sensing datasets are expensive to collect, and each is acquired under different environmental conditions or with significant variations in system operating parameters. Unsupervised clustering algorithms analyze the structure of each dataset independently, rather than drawing on similarities with existing “training” examples, and are thus well suited for practical remote-sensing applications. We introduce VoroClust, a fast density-based unsupervised clustering algorithm applicable to high-resolution and high-dimensional data. VoroClust runs as fast as distance-based clustering methods, while capturing complex regional geometries at least as well as current-density-based methods. It uses a data-centered sphere cover to reduce computational demands, while still capturing data topology. It then propagates clusters outward from local peaks in density. We show that VoroClust provides fast state-of-the-art clustering for both high-resolution polarimetric synthetic aperture radar and high-dimensional hyperspectral imaging datasets.

VoroClust

SAND2025-11465O VoroClust, also known as Voronoi Clustering, is a fast, density-based unsupervised clustering algorithm applicable to high-resolution and high-dimensional data. It operates as quickly as distance-based clustering methods while effectively capturing complex regional geometries, matching the performance of current density-based methods. VoroClust employs a data-centered sphere cover to reduce computational demands while preserving data topology. It propagates clusters outward from local density peaks. Although supervised machine learning is powerful for applications like image classification and segmentation, it requires comprehensive, consistent datasets, which many applications lack. Unsupervised clustering algorithms analyze the structure of each dataset rather than relying on similarities with other examples, making them well-suited for practical applications with insufficient or inappropriate data for supervised learning. IceNet for FireBox - A Berkeley Warehouse-Scale Computer

Berkeley’s FireBox is a next-generation warehouse-scale computer (WSC) that utilizes the energy-efficiency and bandwidth density of integrated silicon-photonic interconnects to enable a new high-bandwidth and low-latency network fabric connecting thousands of compute nodes to petabytes of DRAM and Flash storage. The high bandwidth, low latency and high connectivity of FireBox’s WSC network fabric (IceNet) will enable dramatic improvements in the overall system energy efficiency enabling fine-grain power control on system resources (processors, links and memory/storage components). IceNet is a special 3-stage photonic Clos network architected to achieve ultra-low-latency connectivity between processor nodes and memory, drastically cutting down on the energy wasted in resource idling (processors and memory stalled due to pending network requests). This is achieved by integration of the first and last switch stages into processor/memory hub clients and by heavy over-provisioning of the high-radix middle switches (FlareSwitches). A key hardware component developed in this program is an active laser power management photonic integrated circuits called LightSpark. It interacts with the FlareSwitch and provides laser power to a subset of occupied switch ports, increasing the utilization of laser light in the photonic network by an order of magnitude. In addition to guiding the laser power where it is needed, the laser-power management module enables both wavelength and laser redundancy, significantly increasing the robustness of the system. The goal of the IceNet fabric is to enable communication between 1000s of processor nodes and PBs of memory/storage with <100ns latency, <10pJ/b wall-plug energy cost at multiple Pb/s of available connectivity bandwidth. These metrics represent two-orders of magnitude improvement with respect to the status of current data-center technology.

Mechanical Solutions Scan Report

Power lines, poles, and towers are the backbone of the United States (U.S.) electric-power grid. These transmission and distribution networks route electricity from generator to loads. The characteristics of these routes are rapidly changing -- trending towards decentralized renewable generation, electric heating, vehicle charging, and large data-center loads. Coupled with aging infrastructure and the increased frequency of extreme weather events, there is concern about the future reliability and transmission capacity of conductors and adjacent components. This scan report seeks to provide an overview of mechanical solutions to challenges caused by extreme weather events associated with components of transmission and distribution infrastructure, including conductor heat sag, ice accumulation, wind, and wildfire. Many options could increase transmission capacity or reliability, and these are at various stages of technological readiness. Some have only been lab tested, while some have been widely deployed in the U.S. or overseas for decades. The solution categories and providers featured in this report are intended to be comprehensive at the time of publication and to serve as a reference for decision-makers concerned about transmission and distribution reliability. There are two other categories of large, complex solutions, which are not covered in this report: replacing existing conductors with advanced conductors and implementing digital grid enhancing technologies. A separate scan report titled “Advanced Conductor Scan Report,” which discusses advanced carbon-core conductors, was published by the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) in 2023. Information on digital technologies, such as dynamic line ratings, power-flow controllers, and other power electronics and communications-based devices, can be found on the Grid- Enhancing Technologies landing page. Mechanical grid-enhancing technologies, or solutions covered in this report, often do not require full equipment replacement and do not rely on digital components. Mechanical technologies are overlooked because they may be older, simpler, or seemingly “more obvious” than digital or carbon-core technologies. However, it is wise to consider mechanical solutions in a thorough evaluation of grid enhancing technology solutions.

Optically connected memory for disaggregated data centers

Recent advances in integrated photonics enable the implementation of reconfigurable, high-bandwidth, and low energy-per-bit interconnects in next-generation data centers. We propose and evaluate an Optically Connected Memory (OCM) architecture that disaggregates the main memory from the computation nodes in data centers. OCM is based on micro-ring resonators (MRRs), and it does not require any modification to the DRAM memory modules. We calculate energy consumption from real photonic devices and integrate them into a system simulator to evaluate performance. Here, our results show that (1) OCM is capable of interconnecting four DDR4 memory channels to a computing node using two fibers with 1.02 pJ energy-per-bit consumption and (2) OCM performs up to 5.5× faster than a disaggregated memory with 40G PCIe NIC connectors to computing nodes.
